Re: #I7 The Law of Tithing
We had a nuanced lesson on the history of tithing and implementation policies in church history. It was silent in there, it i think was news to everyone but me and the teacher. Then a former bishop jumped in and started arguing, and the teacher said, "hold up, you're jumping ahead to 1970." And the...

#I7 The Law of Tithing
I rarely attend church and attend 2nd and 3rd hour even less. But attending with family from out of town. I even wore a dress. No one argued net vs gross. Everyone who spoke were adamant that is is a full 10% of all income even gifts, etc. Question was asked-What does the church do with the money? L...

Re: LDS Church and BSA part ways
Hopefully this adds one more heavy weight on shelves everywhere. Unfortunate, but it was inevitable as the church doesn't want to associate with anyone that approves of LGBT issues. My DS has been in a community cub scout troop ever since he was 6/1st grade. LOVE IT. They go on campouts at an earlie...

Re: Mormon Doctrine 1958-2010
I have an older one that was my mother's copy. I am holding on to it in case I ever need it to prove the racist bigotry of the church's past. I have read some of the crazy but cant bring myself to read it cover to cover. I remember when he was truly worshiped like a god. And then it seemed like over...

Re: Did Anybody Else Want to Crack Up...
I was in total shock. How could my mom and dad hold a straight face while talking to me in those get ups? The worst was seeing people from my ward keep straight faces too. People I seriously respected- how could they act so normal while looking like oompa loompas? I knew right then it was a cult and...
Re: Cages
Give it some time. As they say, time is the salve that heals all wounds... I can specifically recall a day when I thought I was going insane. The pressure was intense from not meeting everyone's standards and wanting to live a more genuine life seemed like an impossible dream. Given enough time, my ...

Re: Kids' Ordinances
We had a new baby boy born in March. My wife wants to have a baby blessing, and the plan is to do it when we visit Utah this summer for a family reunion. I guess because of the status quo that has been established with these baptisms, I wasn't really consulted about any details of the baby blessing...

This is how: “This is what you shall do; Love the earth and sun and the animals, despise riches, give alms to every one that asks, stand up for the stupid and crazy, devote your income and labor to others, hate tyrants, argue not concerning God, have patience and indulgence toward the people, take ...

Re: Kids' Ordinances
I only have two children and I am female. Different, but same... I went inactive 5 years ago, DH is borderline TBM/NOM. After I left, I have had to put up with nonstop family pestering about whether I would allow DH to baptize the kids. My view is to allow the baptism, but teach my point of view at ...

Re: The Church and a Demon-Riddled World
Agree.
There are endless boogey-man inspired stories to tell. Good vs Evil, Stay-in-the-boat kind of fodder. It is so easy to tell all kinds of ghost stories- and the confirmation bias just seals the deal. I really believe it is this kind of superstition that keeps many doubters in the church.

Re: What is the tipping point?
My experience has been a roller coaster ride with my DH. There are days when I think he is totally on board with me, and others that he decides we need to attend church and he puts his garments on. He still holds to the concept that the church is a good thing for our children. I am trying to show hi...

Re: LDS Ancestry and Your Roots
I am doing DNA testing with my mom for Mother's Day. I am so excited. Only I am not using the Ancestry brand. I am so stealing your idea- I cant wait to bring this up with my mom and ask her about her tribal lineage. I cant answer your question about their oversight with a straight face- it is too f...

Re: Advice to "study MORE!"
TBM's do study- the conference talks and the scriptures. All about OBEY. When I started to lose my faith, my family all sent me conference talks and links to "LDS living". It is that tricky internet with all of the links that takes people down the rabbit hole. I started at Dialogue, then BCC, then F...

yes.
Born in Utah. Family wedding receptions were held at the Beehive House. Knew all about JS, BY- and growing up, family was always talking about the polygamists that lived near the mouth of Little Cottonwood Canyon.

Re: Replacing the New Order Mormon
The main difference that I see is that old NOMs were trying to find a place for themselves within the church where they could serve and somehow be understood and accepted, and that they could focus on what they still found to be "true" about the church. New NOMs have more or less given up on that p...

Re: Glad to see you
I have only attended sacrament twice so far this year, but will have to get active again due to family vacations, etc. Not looking forward to it. Isn't family vacation, the time you normally skip church? why would this force you into activity? I should be more specific- both my mother and my mother...

Re: Taught v. Learned
I was one of those people who knew the skeletons existed. I lived outside the morridor as a teenager and was an avid reader- so I found all kinds of fun stuff at the local library that was anti-mormon. Yet because I was invested spiritually in believing there is more to the story I continued to just...

I was on the NOM 1.0 but have been on the upswing away from church activity for the past year or more. Recently things are starting to swing the other way so I am back. Bio: BIC, served mission to Arizona in early 90's, MIT, DH served mission to Toronto early 90's- he is TBM at heart but lives more ...
