podcast about Short Creek and the FLDS
https://www.stitcher.com/podcast/stitcher/unfinished-podcast/e/77164740 I'd heard about the FLDS from the time I joined the church, but always accepted the breezy assurances I was given that they were a group of fanatics who really had little in common with "real" Mormons. It was either on an episod...

Re: What are you doing to protect your family against the virus?
I'm just going to leave this here: https://zenodo.org/record/4028830 A quick Google search turned up a Newsweek article which led with the following: Fact-check: Does a New Study Give Evidence that the Coronavirus Was Made In a Lab? BY KASHMIRA GANDER ON 9/15/20 AT 5:09 PM EDT SHARE HEALTH CORONAVI...

Re: How essential is a literal Adam and Eve story to Mormonism?
Fervent and literal believer though I was as a TBM, I never really believed in a literal Adam and Eve. And I was beyond baffled when friends would assure me that they could trace their family history aaaaaaall the way back . . .
Re: Denial
Before I give my thoughts on this particular thread, and I really hope alas doesn't mind, but her response on that other thread is absolutely spot on to this one. So I've copied it in full for ya'll: "When you know something and refuse to know it, it is called denial. Yes, it is dishonest, cowardic...
Re: Denial
For me, this is one of the most heinous thing that religion in general teaches: It literally teaches you not to think . What's that quote we apostates love that ends with "the thinking has been done." ??? Is this "not thinking" the same as denial? Right?? Either way, it drives me a little bit nuts ...
Re: Denial
You're more generous than me. I always think that no one is in a better position to realize that he has no clothes on than the emperor who is feeling the chair on his bare bottom. The image of bare, shriveled-up GA bottoms on the big red chairs at GC made me laugh out loud. As for generosity -- wel...
Denial
I started this as a response to the"Secret Mormon Meetings" thread over in the Doctrinal Discussions forum, but it got kind of long and then I was afraid of hijacking the thread, so I'm making it its own topic. For years I didn't allow myself to face some serious issues that were going on in my life...

Re: An integrity crisis?
I think I am somewhat in shock because I am trying desperately to hold on to my family through this whole truth crisis thing, and he seems 100% willing to just walk away from his (she wants to stay together, try counseling, he doesn't). It turns out I did not really know him at all. And yet, I stil...

Re: What aspect of Mo’ism do you still hold dearly?
I joined when I was 21. I came from a dysfunctional family and was on a dangerously self-destructive path. As a Mormon I learned self-discipline, structure, emotional control. My children grew up being part of a community of people who loved and watched over them -- a village to help raise them, as ...

Re: What’s the future of anti-Mormonism look like?
Maybe more people calling out the Q15 directly and publicly, and challenging them to come out of hiding and respond to issues? More street epistemology? Going out and talking to people and trying to have friendly conversations to lead them through steps of critical thinking? The way things are goin...

Re: What are you drinking right now?
My dad's birthday is coming up next week. He died several years ago, before I left the church (I joined the church when I was 21). He loved Fat Tire beer and I decided this year I'm going to try it in remembrance of him . . . and with regret that I never drank it with him.

Re: What are you drinking right now?
Finally gave in and tried the Dalgona whipped coffee that's all over the internet. I had some espresso powder, added in a bit of cocoa and ended up adding it to ice cream instead of milk and ice. I'm not sure you could properly call it a drink by the time I got done with it, but hoo boy. It was amaz...

Re: Church wants more Christ-centered artwork in buildings
In our congregation, we wanted to have images from the Christian tradition, while avoiding the literalistic / Romantic era of Anglo-Saxon Jesus paintings. We opted to reproduce the stained glass windows from Chartres Cathedral (one of the standout examples of Medieval Christian art and architecture...

Re: Is God Love? or is God Obedience?
These are interesting observations. I have read that one of the benefits of having two parents is that there is often a parallel of the sort you mention with yours, where one is tender and unconditionally loving while the other is about standards and expectations to be met. Both fill an important ro...

Re: Overjoyed...
I tuned in briefly Saturday morning because I felt in need of some comfort and inspiration and . . . I couldn't take more than about 90 seconds of whoever-that-was droning on about what-ever-it-was (JS? Restoration?). I think at least a portion of the world is ripe for a prophet right now -- I guess...

Re: Faith Journey level-up!
Now that it has registered that GC is this weekend, I find myself really wondering if they will offer anything of value. I remember how eager I was for conference right after 9/11, hoping for inspired guidance -- and how deflated I was when we were basically told to just keep on as usual.

Faith Journey level-up!
So there have been a lot of references to General Conference in recent posts, and I have been generally aware that it was coming up. But I'm counting it as a real milestone in my post-mormon journey that I didn't realize until a couple of minutes ago (when someone in another thread said "this weeken...

Re: Home Church and Women
A private ex-Mormon women's group had this entry from one of its members yesterday: My husband is on a ward council Zoom meeting trying to figure out the magic sacrament rules. What if someone went to the church, blessed the sacrament, then people could come and pick up the blessed bread?.....no the...
