Maybe that professor wasn't aware that the BYU Religious Studies Center had published a book on the topic:
https://rsc.byu.edu/book/mormons-muslims
I wonder if maybe my professor just didn't like the people who wrote this book. This book was published well before I took the class. Curious.

Re: Mormons and Muslims

I took a class at BYU called History of the Medieval and Modern Near East. It covered the area of the world we now associate with Islam starting with Mohammed and going into the present day. One of the assignments was a research paper. We all chose our topics and wrote up a rough draft. A woman in o...

Re: Love

I think that God wants us to love others and ourselves. I think the Mormon church has always had some very punitive notions of love that don't match any god I want to worship. We have courts of love. Everyone should look up how the Toscano's describe those. I'm embarrassed to copy it. And there's al...

Re: Where was John the beloved buried? Or was he not buried?

That's an interesting question. I don't even know where Joseph Smith is buried. I'm surprised it's not a pilgrimage site at least on par with Elvis' grave. He's buried in Nauvoo. The church may not want to call attention to it since it is a family plot and is owned by the CoC. If I remember correct...

Re: Granting small indulgences

I think there is some truth to this idea. But I don't think it's always as organized or done exactly in that way all the time. For example (from my POV): During the Monson era, Uchtdorf had a lot of latitude to say what he truly thought and believed as a member of the FP (IMO). Monson and Uchtdorf ...

Re: PewResearchCenter - new report

62% believe in hell Huh?! What? I thought we didn't believe in hell. Or at least the Catholic/Protestant version of it. That's sad. Another abandonment of the Mormon tradition towards something that I see as unhealthier and less unique in Christian theology. For some reason, Mormons have a deep des...

Re: New Gospel Topic on BOM Geography.

I agree with this quote “ Individuals may have their own opinions regarding Book of Mormon geography and other such matters about which the Lord has not spoken.”…my opinion is the BoM is fictional and there is no geography for it. Has anyone listed the things that the Lord has spoken about? Because...

Re: Prayer Circles

I recall when I was a young man in the 80'sthat some of the old-timers in my ward talked about how they used to enjoy the prayer circles in priesthood, and they even mentioned that some buildings in Utah (where they do everything right) had an alter in the priesthood room. My dad confirmed this to ...

Granting small indulgences

Often when listening to conference as I have been distancing myself from the church, I have thought, "This is a good talk." Usually it's a talk that acknowledges problems that come into people's lives or that one talk by Uchtdorf that acknowledged problems with church leadership. These talks never, ...

Re: Tales of Tithing Settlement

It's been a few years, but a while back I stopped paying tithing. I did not attend tithing settlement, and the bishop sent me a text asking for my tithing status. I sent a message back declaring myself to be a non-tithe payer. I few months later, my temple recommend expired. A counselor asked me to ...

Re: Dehlin Alternate Reality

Usually when I hear someone talking about NOMs they use it as a derogatory term for either "liberal Mormons" who are trying to steer the church away from the political Right, or people who have maintained just enough belief to remain in the church and continue to be somehow spiritually and emotiona...

Conclusion: Dallin Oaks lied . He did not claim he was unaware of such activities; he categorically denied that they happened while was there. Pants on fire. And when given a chance to "clarify" to the press, he declined and had no comment on the "discrepancy between his memory and the record" or s...

Re: Lift a glass to Kerry Shirts!

I would like to hit back hard on the idea that RFM did not answer a question until he was pressed. The MMs accused him of ad hominem and straw man without any basis. These guys know the words, but they are otherwise ignorant of the rules of evidence, how to craft an argument, and how to respond to p...

Re: DHO's Attempted Gaslighting of Electroshock Therapy On Gay Individuals At BYU

As we learned from a recent ex-POTUS, if you say what you want your devotees to believe, that becomes the truth. Anyone who opposes them is, by default, lying. As we have learned from politicians in general, "I don't recall," and "I wasn't aware of that" are two of the most useful phrases in human ...

Re: DHO's Attempted Gaslighting of Electroshock Therapy On Gay Individuals At BYU

So, I can’t accept that he didn’t know. And I don’t think the man is a purposeful liar. I can believe denial. Like I had clients as a social worker, who were being sexually abused by a father or older brother, and their mother walked in on them being abused. Saw the child naked on the bed, with nak...

Re: Debate night live thread!!!!!!

The thing is: they are right. The church today is NOT the church I grew up in in the 70's and 80's, not is it the church that existed when I served a mission in the 90's. This raises two questions: 1. If the doctrine does not change then how to explain all the changes? 2. Why does it always seem to...

Re: Debate night live thread!!!!!!

This is the clearest indication as to why leaders refuse to talk to anyone outside of the church in a public setting because it is beyond clear that there are no real answers and the emotional appeals simply do not work to anyone outside of the Mormon bubble. TBM me craved leaders who would take on...
