Re: Photo Session with Jesus

The Mesa Easter Pageant comes close to this level of pop culture photography. They do discourage having the actor portraying Jesus show up in photographs in this manner. If you are another cast member or you knew him personally then it could happen casually. But staged photographs as if you were in ...

Re: Homosexuals are broken

BTW, your DD is lucky to have you! The church needs more members like you! Thank you. Their wedding is later this summer and I will provide more details and possibly pictures as the time approaches. I fully expect some astonishingly attractive children biologically born to this union in the next fe...

Re: President Eyring Shares a Powerful Miracle...

The funny thing is that this would be astonishing if spiritual people meeting together actually caused visible light to appear . A group of Christian believers cause measurable and visible electromagnetic radiation by having a spiritual experience in a specific way. If this could be reliably repeate...

Re: Homosexuals are broken

TL:DR are gays really broken? I'm not sure how the LDS church could change the narrative and still remain distinctly LDS. This seems like one small domino that starts knocking down a monumental string of doctrinal and policy dominoes ending in absurdity. I truly think that the defense against homos...

Re: Yo Mamma Is So Pioneer...

Do you have children being conscripted into a stake pioneer trek this summer? My stake did it last year. While it was well organized and had some genuinely interesting moments, I don't think it was quite the transformative experience that was hoped. Some "Yo Mama" jokes might have helped. Yo Mamma i...

Re: How relevant

If president Monson were to make a grand statement, would anybody really listen or care outside the Church? Where do you see the Church's influence, how far does it extend? Do you feel like the Church is smaller and smaller, or weaker and weaker as you step back from adherence/attendance? Do you th...

Re: The fading LDS Eschatology

In my ward's Gospel Doctrine class last Sunday the topic was the Second Coming of Jesus. I did not feel up to the emotional burden of disrupting class so I did not ask a couple of probing questions such as: Any idea of the time frame of the return? What do you think that saints in the 1840s would th...

Re: Attorney Friend Leaves Church--Shelf Nuked

This is a fascinating story. It seems like it was a slow burn until something reached an unexpectedly powerful flash point. Does your friend have any idea what he will do with his life now? Will his wife and children follow him or even tolerate his exit? It's not like we haven't seen this kind of dr...

Re: A different Q15 --------- Question #15 - Self evaluation

This is the most important of the questions and arguably the only one truly necessary. Yes, I consider myself worthy as someone who strives to live a moral life and wants to support my family. Exactly what does the LDS temple offer back to me?

Re: When did religion start and what is its purpose?i

I'm failing to see the difference between religion and any other belief systems (eg. communism, nationalism, capitalism) that exist within large, socially stratified societies. The way it appears to me is there are many belief systems that can inspire one to give up food, property or life to satisf...

Re: A different Q15 --------- Question #14 (the only one focused on the past vs present)

No, I truly, truly do not believe I am guilty of any sin that truly needs to be resolved with priesthood authority. If I suddenly found the doctrinally correct, intellectually satisfying, and emotionally compelling explanations for everything in the CES Letter or Mormon Think, I would be happy to re...

Re: When did religion start and what is its purpose?i

Most of the human brain is concerned with pattern recognition. This is especially true with facial recognition as evidenced by how easily humans detect human faces in all sorts of every day objects like electrical outlets and headlights and bumpers on cars. We quickly see patterns even when patterns...

Re: Anyone in Boise interested in meeting up?

Any groups meeting regularly in the area? If not, anyone else interested in meeting up? There are definitely groups in Boise. This probably led to the famous Oaks visit for the "Boise Rescue" several years ago. Check out Mormon Spectrum and note at least three groups in the Boise area catering to y...

Re: Temple marriages are stronger?

Are there real statistical studies out there anywhere that actually prove that temple marriages have lower divorce rates? I would love to see this also. Several years ago I read an article by a devout Catholic man about his view of marriage equality. He pointed out that true Catholic marriages are ...

Re: Religion's Vital Role? What About the LDS Role?

1) Religion makes social change. He uses the example of Desmond Tutu, Mother Teresa, William Wilberforce and others to argue that without religion, slavery and apartheid wouldn't have been abolished, etc. etc. Even conceding that point, can't you see the logical fallacy in your own argument? WHAT F...

Re: A different Q15 --------- Question #13 - Garments

This is one of the few questions with a figurative and literal material claim. And No, I don't wear the temple garment in the manner the church would prefer. Also, I do not cut out marks when I through them away.

Re: A different Q15 --------- Question #10 (percent)

If my bishop were also my CPA then I can't imagine that I could possibly claim to be a full tithe payer. But he's not and never will be. The handbook simply says 10% of increase and no details or example beyond that. I can't remember who, but I think it was Rock Waterman who wrote a terrific post a...
