Re: Sheesh! Who is God mad at now?
I think that is true a lot of the time, but I would hesitate to say "always". Alright, change the always to mostly. Take the latest Mexico earthquake for example. Most of the dead were children buried in a collapsed grade school. That aught to teach those queers a lesson. I really do think that God...

Re: Money, Money, Money
Here's the real genius of the church. A significant amount of the billions they get in donations comes from people who don't really believe the party line. It is very possible that they know this and that it validates their time-honored process of social pressure, obfuscation, family hijacking and s...

Re: How to talk to TBMs?
When they ask you why you "don't believe" just turn it back around and ask them why they "do believe". Since they've probably really never actually thought about it, try and get them to actually think for a change. Brilliant. Here's my little trick to keep my sanity. I smile and nod when someone is...

Re: Called on a porn-fighting mission?
I used to work in an entertainment industry. One time I was at a trade show in Las Vegas and unwittingly walked into a hall that I assumed was part of the conference that I was attending, but it turned out to be the trade show for the adult film industry. Once I recovered from the initial shock the ...

You should get that in writing, have it notarized and posted on the ward bulletin board.

Re: how to get out of a calling
The amazing thing about these guys is that they expect so much respect, as if they are what they claim to be. There is absolutely nothing that suggests that they really are prophets, seers, revelators and witnesses of Jesus Christ. They're administrators of a corporation that is given billions of ta...

Re: American Apocrypha
Thanks for the reports, Emower. I find this very useful. Maybe we need a book report forum.
Yes, it seems like Mormon was the Velcro at the beginning of the "large plates" that Joseph used to attach the later "small plates" story, and then he became a convenient summarizing tool.

Re: Bednar's wife?
My thoughts haven't skewed toward Bednar, but Monson. I've heard that in private he's not a nice guy. I don't know about you but I was quite disturbed when he joked with the boy participating in a temple cornerstone ceremony about giving the little girl "the back of your hand" is she didn't do it t...

Re: I am no longer alone, or why they don't get it
The temple recommend interview is where the church really shows its colors. Despite everything that is said outside that room, it's all really about obedience and conformity. First of all, my friend isn't allowed to go to the temple because she doesn't believe Thomas Monson is a literal prophet of G...

Re: Have no doubt that if you give the Church enough rope,....
I think I would point out to the leaders that this kind of behavior is why the church is losing, in Elder Holland's words, "it's best and brightest." We don't really reward people for achievements, we reward them for conformity. The kids who lie and fake their way through it are always held up above...

Re: I am no longer alone, or why they don't get it
It helps validate that you're not crazy, but the church is definitely insane. She sounds like someone I'd love to meet - she follows her own integrity, and is outspoken. Yup! Did she happen to tell you how her shelf crashed? I love that she was one of the ward's stars - so many of the "brightest an...

I also think you can be scrupulously honest and successfully navigate the rest of the questions if you think about it and respond only to the question being asked not the one you think they really want to ask. I agree. You can even preface it (as I have done) with a statement like, "just be aware t...

I am no longer alone, or why they don't get it
I have talked about how I squeaked by the TR interview by getting peremptory advice from the SP about how to pass the bishop interview. Yesterday Mrs. Hagoth came home from church early with another sister in tow who hadn't been so lucky in the hotseat. It turned out to be the best conversation I ha...

Re: Sitting and Standing
To see someone employ this method with a room full of grown adult humans is amazing. I am constantly amazed at how we Mormons surrender our agency so easily to men who claim authority over us. Mrs. Hagoth came home early from church last week and said that one of our bishops counselors at the end o...

Called on a porn-fighting mission?
Our GD lesson today was about the handcart pioneers and how we can weigh the hardships in our own lives against theirs. Somewhere along the way the teacher mentioned that his sister-in-law and her husband have just been called to Cache Valley on a porn-fighting mission. Has anybody else heard of suc...

Its "neatly" taken care by the catalyst theory. That works forks for the Abraham narrative itself but not for the Facsimile translations and is complicated by the fact that the text makes direct references to the facsimiles as being part of the source scroll. It is further complicated by the KEP an...

Re: "And it came to pass" - evidence for BoM authenticity
Find me the phrase "probationary state" in any hebrew writings and I'll be impressed. I can only find it repeatedly in Hopkinsian magazine sermon 1824. This whole sermon reads like Alma. Interesting. Here's how the word probation is distributed in a scripture search on LDS.com: Old Testament (0) Ne...
