Re: How do I teach primary?
One determines it by the complaints one gets from his co-teacher or the kids' parents. Ah, so it's externally determined based upon what others think? :) Have you gotten complaints from the kids' parents? Tell them they can teach it -- that should help quiet things down. I have taught a little abou...

Re: Dealing with TBMs
While the throes may end, I'm not sure the knowing anything ever does. At best, you just end up with more things to not know anything about.slavereeno wrote: ↑Mon Dec 04, 2017 8:35 amI am still deep in the throws of deconstruction and I don't claim to KNOW anything.

Re: How do I teach primary?
Definitely. That's s what I strongly found after being released from years of callings that kept me out of GD and EQ. It was better being elsewhere and I couldn't stand the adult classes anymore. So I finally left.slavereeno wrote: ↑Sun Dec 03, 2017 10:35 pmIt does keep me out of gospel doctrine which is a huge plus!

Re: How do I teach primary?
I'd say skip the unfounded folklore and try to help the kids understand what it would've been like to have lived then. If you live in the Salt Lake area, talk about how things were different then and what it would've been like to arrive. If you live outside that area, generalize it away from a speci...

Re: Does Belief Require Literalism?
Or consider a wide variety of paganism, pantheism, Wicca, or any number of individualized spiritual practices. Many of these people don't have any literal beliefs. From a little more traditional perspective there are the Unitarian Universalists. Their members tolerate a wide range of beliefs, but in...

Re: Does Belief Require Literalism?
This is where the next major reformation in Christianity is set to occur, a mass movement into a stage 5 religion. I like to use Star Wars as an example because of the Campbell and Jung influences. A myth like Star Wars doesn't need to be literally believed in order to evoke insight or a religious ...

Re: Does Belief Require Literalism?
Definitely not. But, it is easier to inspire intense devotion and loyalty that way. Literalism is one of the central components of a Stage 3 faith perspective. These are the people who are strongly aligned and strongly loyal to their tribe, their religious institution, and their recognized religious...

Re: Radio Free Mormon and TK smoothies
I thought the Church's position was that "Gender is an essential characteristic of individual premortal, mortal, and eternal identity and purpose." Seems like they loudly proclaimed that.

Re: Ben Shapiro and transgender mental illness
They, along with lots of others including Shapiro, invoke the slippery slope argument frequently when talking about these issues. There may be a need to label someone as mentally ill and prevent their desires if those desires will result in harm to others or themselves. This part right here is esse...

Re: Ben Shapiro and transgender mental illness
I think Shapiro and others react to what they view as someone else's view being impose on them. He and others seem to really resent having to refer to someone they think is a man as a woman. They think they are being required to do something that they disagree with. This is how it may be someones b...

Re: The Unimportance Of Women's Work
Church society and expectations are still based on a "1950's" model. American society in general undervalues women's work in many ways, but Mormon society lags well behind and these disparities are pretty much a necessity for Mormonism. Mormonism needs a family structure based on the somewhat mythic...

Re: Ben Shapiro and transgender mental illness
The reason I find it interesting is because as I have changed my religious views and shed some of the Mormon shackles, I find that my political views have become more liberal as well. I think this is pretty common. I wonder why that is? ... I thought this was interesting and educated me a little bi...

Re: Ben Shapiro and transgender mental illness
Shapiro insists on his unfettered right to his freedom of speech. Yet, he attempts to control what other people say and more importantly what other people do. It's a warped, biased approach. Some may even call it privileged. As he isn't a transgender person, a medical professional or researcher deal...

Re: Ben Shapiro and transgender mental illness
It sounds like Shapiro is trying to make a distinction that simply isn't supported by what we know and what we don't know. He says he's talking about people where their body is one sex but they feel they are a different sex. There are so many attempts at unwarranted distinctions in this type of a st...

Re: Ben Shapiro and transgender mental illness
I believe my fundamental questions regarding transgender people are: Does it really matter? Is it really any of my business? What can I do to better support people as they are without first requiring them to adhere to my own biases? I'm a pretty cisgender guy, though kind of gender non-conforming in...

Re: Sealing Cancellation
So many people are married for "time and all eternity"....and the church emphasizes over and over the "eternity" portion. Why not place a little more effort on the "time" portion,...hunh? If the church did that, perhaps the "eternity" might work a little better. That was one of my big realizations ...
