Re: Home study church

I consider my time on this website and the ex-mo reddit site my home-study church. Now that “home study” counts, I’m surprisingly a very active member!

Re: Radio Free Mormon vs. Elder Oaks

Jeff Holland's famous "I'm not a dodo" experience with the BBC news crew is possibly the last major time that an apostle was recorded taking questions from skeptical non-believers. There is a conspiracy theory that the whole "Meet the Mormons" movie was produced by the LDS church simply to cause Go...

Re: 20% of missionaries coming home early

According to a news story on the radio this morning. I wonder if this is the reason for rumors that one of the new revelations will have something to do with more flexible mission lengths. This was a trend I noticed, going back about a decade ago. YM I taught for 3-4 years and saw going out then co...

Re: The Toxic Teachings of Henry J. Eyring

“Toxic, damaging, psychologically manipulative - this is disgusting. He begins by talking about how shaken he was when he discovered that scholarship had proven the Book of Abraham to be a fraud, and how his “secret weapon” GA dad simply asked him how the book makes him feel, and all was well becaus...

Re: DS is getting hitched

On the bright side, at least you have the nifty pass to get in to see it. The ceremony was horrible. I don't know if they are being instructed to do so, but this is now the second one, done by a different officiator, and it was just awful. The little sermon before had not a damn thing to do with ma...

I was in a similar situation at the UofU in the 90’s. My solution, go outside of Utah for grad school! It was a night and day difference! Finally had some physical distance from my parents so I could go inactive.

Re: Are Mission Presidents feeling the heat?

I’m not sure how new this type of thing is. On my mission, in the 90’s, we had a GA come for a mission conference and he did the drill sergeant routine. Told us, in a very unfriendly way, that we needed to work harder. I specifically remember him saying that we shouldn’t be talking about how much we...

Re: General Conference Death March

Great RFM podcast! Listened to it last night! Last conference they were probably playing up the fear of death to keep people too scared to question. (The reign of Deiter is over! Its no more Mister nice First Presidency! It’s fire, brimstone, and conditional love!) It’s probably the internet era tha...

Absolutely a terrible thing to believe. Maybe this is her coping mechanism, but it is certainly sadistic. I think this is probably right. It is her way of saying, "this is in God's hands." If pressed most of us just accept that things happen, we just don't want to feel that we don't have control. B...

Re: Great talk in SM yesterday

Very nice to hear , I often wonder if anybody still "gets it" in this world today. Gives me hope as well. Thanks for sharing that. A lot of people "get it" today, but those people are normally not attending an LDS church. When they do, they commonly don't bring "it" up because "it" is not entirely ...

Re: Horses in the Book of Mormon

Didn’t you NoM’s get the memo? When the BOM uses the word, “horses,” what they really are refering to are animals called tapirs! ...If you’d known this important information you probably wouldn’t have become NOMs! Back to church! From the article: 7. Tapir. In my opinion, a more likely candidate for...

Great movie! I saw it in the theater back in the day! At first, I thought it was just “ok,” but over the next few days as I thought it about it grew on me until I came to think of the best movies ever! All great movies are like that, they are so original that they take time to process! I didn’t ever...

Re: Nuancing the recommend

For the WoW just repent right before the interview. Just say a prayer and ask for forgiveness! Easy, Peasy, Lemmon Squeezy! That’s exactly why Jesus died for you! As for tithing, I think official church guidance is that each member determines whether they are a full tithe payer. So if you feel that ...
