Re: Returning Missionary Procedures
Really. Listen to this. You will not regret it if you can laugh at something called thebookumARmun. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TN1Ez7MjvBU That talk would be greatly improved by the addition of a laugh track. He really had me on pins and needles for a while but I was relieved that he made it a...

Re: Eckhart Tolle describing NOMs
So freaking true!!! Unless you cultivate friendly critics. Science does this. Messy but good governments do this.
I see some of this in NOM.
The CHURCH of Jesus Christ of LDS.... not so much.

Re: A Reasonable God?
Wonderful comments. I've said it before but it bears repeating. NOM beats the crap out of LDS Sunday School. Thank goodness for the South Valley Community of St. Judas too. :D Each new "revelation" tries to build on and reconcile previous traditions: ????-- Baal-- Jehovah--Jesus/Trinity-- Allah-- Mo...

A Reasonable God?
Is the God you believe in reasonable? I was reading a 1978 journal of a liberal (white)Church member who was trying to rationalize why God decided June 1978 was the right time to lift the priesthood/temple ban. He rationalized that God was just waiting for the time when the (99.9%) white membership ...

LDS approach to history.
I came across an interesting metaphor in reading Leonard Arrington's 1978 diaries today. To paraphrase- He said the Mormons believe in baptism by immersion, but many prefer to teach Church History by sprinkling. I thought it was clever and insightful explanation of the Church History which was being...

Indoctrination
To the tune of "Follow the Prophet."
Follow the prophet,
In-doc-tri-na-tion,
Through repetition
Still works today.
Follow the Prophet
In-doc-ti-na-tion
pure repetition,
Will make kids stay.
Just came to mind.

Re: Question about early missionaries to England/Scandinavia:
Good Comments. Another good book about emigrants from Europe is Tell It All by Fanny Stenhouse. It is quite long, but her account of learning about polygamy little by little, in the face of official denials by Church leaders and Missionaries is first hand. It's $1 on kindle.

A good therapist is likely to be more helpful than most prophets.
Heck, a good friend is more helpful than most prophets.

Why are powerful men.......horndogs?
Like Boyd Packer, I want to treat this subject with reverence- ;)- but have you ever wondered why rich, powerful men so often seduce multiple women? From John Kennedy to Bill Clinton to Joseph Smith to Brigham Young to Leonardo Di Caprio to Jimmy Swaggert to Martin Luther King, when men get fame, po...

Re: After 10+ years inactive, I decided to return for good
I tried to convert my wife to post Mormonism a little, but now I try to explain how I see things differently, while validating her views and acknowledging I could be wrong, which seems to work better. My wife loves teaching primary and working in the temple. I see that it makes her happy which makes...

Re: The Ultimate Conspiracy Theory?
Axioms that portray a devil's advocate sometimes appeal to me:
One ideology's freedom fighter is the opposing ideology's terrorist- and vice versa.
One person's conspiracy theory is another person's religion, and vice versa.

Two more things: Eph. 2:8-9 is the scripture that says "We are saved by grace, not works, lest any man should boast."
2: This is an example of my weird way of looking at things, wondering- What are those Mormons thinking?

How inspired was Paul from a Mormon perspective?
As a missionary I had Ephesians 2:8-9 thrown in my face countless times. It was THE proof text that Mormons were wrong, that Mormons weren't really Christians, etc. When I first found a JS translation, I expectantly looked it up hoping to find that it had been mistranslated. "Strange," I thought at ...

Re: Slowly fading away? The future of NOM?
NOM was a lifesaver for me when I first found it around 2012. When it disappeared for awhile I missed it, Other forums didn't fit as well. They were too contentious, or too shallow. I was really glad when it was brought back. I sense that the average age of contributors is 40 or above. I could be wr...

Re: Does anyone tell the truth anymore
I have the same feelings. I'm 68 and 13 years ago I found out that Church leaders were capable of deceiving themselves and others, but on reflection I realized that everyone, myself included deceives themselves and others. I believe there is a quality that is objective truth, but all humans have sub...
