Re: New Gospel Topics Essay - BOM Geography

There are lots more of them in addition to the ones listed above. I have found most of them are very brief and watered down. ... Once you get to one of the history essays, there is a long list of other topics in the left margin to get to the others. Here is what is listed just for A-B: Church Histo...

Re: New Gospel Topics Essay - BOM Geography

There seems to be a bunch of new essays creeping up. No dates, no announcements. Don't spread the word, we wouldn't want people to actually discuss these things! Edit to add headings to the links. Formatting cut off the part that actually showed what they are about... Masonry: https://www.lds.org/st...

Re: Just not believing is enough

Amen. When confronted with the question "So you don't even pray to God anymore?" I just responded with "I just don't feel the need, nor do I miss it, given I don't believe there's a white haired old man dabbling in my daily affairs." You might then be confronted with "But what if it is true. Wouldn...

Re: Giants in Ohio Burial Mound!

I just finished the Dan Vogel interview on MS. I need to read more about these mound builder myths. The urim and thummim being so huge was always a weird shelf item for me. How did Jews who came across the ocean suddenly get so big? Oh... wait... Urim and thummim is from old testament times. OT talk...

Re: Mission Recordings

I guess that's really when my "shelf" started, but it would take another 20+ years for it to break. So much lost time. I think about things like this too. One day, in the pre-kids era, my wife and I were driving in our car and the topic of evolution came up. I told her that I believe in evolution. ...

Re: To clean or not to clean?

Just my two cents, there are worse service projects than cleaning a building where a lot of people come to be uplifted and serve, even if you don't agree with the methods and/or reasons behind it. At least, as long as you don't get stuck in the bathroom. That said, I complain about it just as much a...

Re: Utah researcher: theory of religious influences in Utah LGBT suicides may be overblown

The incident today is just one of many we've had to deal with, beginning in Jr. High to now. I'm sorry to hear about this too. I feel so bad for kids going through school these days. It has never been easy, and social media has only made it worse. My kids are just approaching middle-school age so w...

Re: Struggling...A Lot

Again, RR, your post was very helpful. You hit it right on, I am an engineer and I overthink everything. I have stopped thinking about the best way possible now. I just want to be done. I'm meeting with our bishop tonight, will return and report. Hey Deepthinker, I have ready your other thread and ...

Re: askreality - Deconstructing Jehova's Witnesses Control

I landed on the apathetic agnostic spectrum. I don't know and I don't care. I'm very strongly in the agnostic camp, but really haven't decided which side of the believing line I'm on. I really like this one and may be headed there myself. Now I'm enjoying the little things and learning to identify ...

Re: askreality - Deconstructing Jehova's Witnesses Control

Isn't it amazing when you start to see similar patterns emerge both inside and outside of your paradigm? One of the first universal parallels amongst all religious foundations I was surprised by was seeing how often the founder succumbs to the power, money, and sex with congregation members. Michae...

Well done Deepthinker. I'm glad that went well and worked out for you! Our bishop is one that still hands out The Miracle of Forgiveness to anyone who comes to speak to him. Nuances are part of his gospel plan. You definitely won leadership roulette!

askreality - Deconstructing Jehova's Witnesses Control

I've been listening to MormonStories 1044-1050: Leah, Cody, and Brinley. I'm still only about half way through now, but there's a part in 1047 I think, where they discuss Leah's sister and her journey out of the church. The mentioned her brother-in-law putting together the "My LDS Journey" videos in...

Re: LDS fireside this Sunday on "Navigating Doubts"

Can we all agree that it's pretty awesome that he church used polygamy in the whack-a-mole graphic to show the dude with two women? Maybe it's just me that finds this hilarious... usually the church would go to great lengths to avoid putting such imagery to it. https://i.ibb.co/jhJ7bhx/renlund2.png...

Re: Infantilization of the mind

I am truly EMBARRASSED by my words and behavior early on in my career- when I used such simplistic language and reprimanded others for their language and behavior. I must have been viewed as a complete imbecile by my peers for the way I acted. I fear this now too. Only I'm already 13+ years into my...

Re: LDS fireside this Sunday on "Navigating Doubts"

I would love for Steven to tell his side of the story. I notice that they did not claim that they had an answer for the temple/priesthood ban concern. Steven almost certainly experienced something different from what was described. Back in the day, I remember Hugh Nibley complaining that anti-Mormo...

Re: I told my husband

I'm sorry for how hard this is. Its a cruel irony that confessing something like this relieves such weight from our shoulders while simultaneously throwing so much of it on our spouse's head. It sounds like you're reassuring him while giving him time to mourn the lost ideal he held on to. I hope he ...

I have noticed this too. It's one of the reasons I dislike listening to general conference. It feels so condescending. I can't handle coming home to find a conference talk playing in the background because of this. When that happens I often just grab the leash and leave again to take the dog on a w...

Infantilization of the mind

I wrote a comment about this on reddit, but wanted to elaborate and possibly discuss here. My wife and I tried watching a new TV series the other day. We did not look for the TV rating before starting, but it turned out to be Mature. :o After a couple of F-words, my wife was done. I found out that t...
