Re: Adult Saturday Night Stake Conference "date"

Excellent analogy. It's like running an MLM company where signing up a downline takes precedence over promoting the product itself. Maybe that's why MLM companies are popular in Utah. From church teachings, many people understand the need (and the sales techniques) for acquiring a network of convert...

Re: Adult Saturday Night Stake Conference "date"

To add: I think this topic brings up an important question: In a mixed-faith relationship, where you do draw the line about attendance at church meetings or church-related social functions? - Wndr.

Re: Adult Saturday Night Stake Conference "date"

It's so stressful to sit through endless meetings where we have to decide how to receive the speaker's words. Do we pretend to listen, then give ourselves permission to zone out? Does our partner object if we bring a book to read or scroll through our phone? Does our partner hope that by asking us t...

Re: “By their fruits ye shall know them.” (Matt. 7:20) - Seven years of sex abuse: How Mormon officials let it happen

It's a terrible issue. There really are no active members who can speak up very much without being ex-communicated. Marie Osmond has spoken up very strongly on behalf of her gay daughter whose same-sex marriage could not be performed in the temple. But Marie is still an active, tithe-paying member. ...

Another thing you can add to your list...

The priesthood had to be restored. If they're so equivalent, why didn't motherhood need to be restored?
Another excellent point ! Thank you. And many thanks to Hagoth for the OP.

Re: Priesthood & Motherhood

Points well taken. I never understood the excuse given to women: "Well, you don't need the priesthood, because you can have children." I never bought into that. There's no equivalence there. Any male of a certain age who follows the rules and does everything the church tells him to do, can automatic...

I'm glad you posted this article, because I was just getting ready to post it. This is an absolute tragedy; and I fear that it has happened far more than we know about. -- Wndr.

Re: Thoughts after visiting Utah

Thank you for this review of Utah ! I'm going to spend next week in Utah, both in Springville, and in downtown SLC for a convention at the Salt Palace. Have not been to Utah for many years, and have never been to Springville. I really don't know what to expect, but I have heard that Utah drivers go ...

Re: Mormon No More on Hulu

That's amazing that Sister Ryder watched this with you. Do you think that you will watch any further episodes, or is it just too stressful? I have difficulty watching or listening to video/ audio with the voices of G.A.'s, other church officials, etc, because they strike me as being so toxic and so ...

Hagoth wrote, Sure, democrats may respect the rule of law, but does that excuse the fact that they eat babies? I know because some guy on the internet said so. Which would you prefer, a white nationalist dictatorship or a bunch of baby brain suckers? Nancy Pelosi is coming for our children !...

Re: Major Depression Diagnosis by State

Mrs. Hagoth still listens to church via Zoom and was a bit miffed this week about a talk on this topic. She was expecting (hoping) for some advice about self care, but then it took a 90 degree turn and became about how you're feeling that way because you're not doing enough. You need to step it up!...

Re: Trump & Church

I was impressed with Rusty Bowers until he said that if Trump were running against Biden again, he would vote for Trump. Even after Trump thoroughly bullied him and threatened him, Bowers will still vote for Trump again. Until Bowers said that, I thought he was very honorable. -- Wndr.

Re: Major Depression Diagnosis by State

Many thanks to Graey for bringing up this important topic. It reminds me of a joke sign that used to hang in my supervisor's office at work: "Beatings will continue until morale improves at this company." In my opinion, high demand churches tend to use a carrot and stick approach towards increasing ...

Re: Elder's Quorum Service Coordinator? (Calling offered to me)

I've only turned down one calling in my life, believe it or not, and that was several years ago when they tried to make me the building cleaning co-ordinator. After being very upset by the existence of the church mall, I basically said that a corporation that owned billions should not be making peo...

Maybe I could talk her into both seeing her counselor to see if we could set boundaries with the church in our marriage. So yeah the church is a pain in my a$$. Stuck -- This is an excellent idea.If she likes and trusts the counselor, she'll then be open to listening and considering feedback. For e...

Re: Anxiety and Depression

To add: I would like to suggest a good book, which is a true story about learning to set boundaries while living with TBM's. It's titled "Educated" by Tara Westover, who grew up in a rigidly strict Mormon family in rural Idaho. Her family was so strict, that they would not send her to school, but in...

Re: Anxiety and Depression

Xanax or other medication can help calm the symptoms for awhile, and you should do whatever your doctor directs you to do. If the Dr. has you on prescription meds, then follow the Dr.'s orders about that. But medications sometimes don't get to the heart of the anxiety and depression, which is the cr...
