Re: 2 faced gentiles

Maybe it was because I never lived in a place where being Mormon was the norm/majority, but if you wanted to fit in to the greater culture, it just made sense not to project your unwanted beliefs on others. Sure there were always those few who did, but for the most part being Mormon never came up an...

Re: Thoughts on Jana Riess podcast on Mormon Land

I agree that Riess is quite fair, and perhaps I should wait and see how things go with my husband, but I don't know that TBMs who hear what she has to say will see it in a "we need to have more nuanced, less black and white thinking" kind of way. More liberal or progressive mormons may get that mess...

Thoughts on Jana Riess podcast on Mormon Land

My husband listened to an interview with Riess on Mormon Land and wants to discuss it with me. I just finished it and I have mixed feelings/thoughts. While I won't give away my exact age, I'm a very young GenX or very old Millennial (born between 1975-1985) so I fit the demographic she's talking abo...

Re: Methodist possibly splitting up over LGTB

We attended a Methodist church last year. My husband was happy it was over by 10 am, the people wore similar clothes to Mormons so we felt comfortable, and some of the hymns we sang were the same. We went on what would be similar to Relief Society Sunday where it was all female speakers from their w...

Re: Transitional underwear

Maybe I could buy some new ones and use a seam ripper to painstakingly remove the masonic symbols! [emoji1787] I tried doing that with some garments and just ended up with a hole. Those things are sewed in pretty tight. I did it with some of my husband's garment tops that my son insisted on using a...

Re: Define: Manhood

I don’t know exactly what Kish is asking for here, but this is a question I think about often. And I’ll put out a disclaimer right here that everything I am going to say has nothing to do with the fact that women are treated poorly in the church and even the greater culture has a way to go before th...

Re: The exmo selfie train!

The photos do send a powerful message. On the other hand, I think they can be harmful as well, in the ways that social media is generally harmful. And I'm not convinced that ex-mo selfies are any more authentic than TBM photos who post saccharine pics of their kids and say, "The Church is True!" Ver...

Re: Sunday Logistics

It does feel shorter. My in-laws are complaining that wards are overlapping in their building so people can get out before 5 pm. Thankfully, our building has each ward start 90 minutes after the last so the last ward gets out of there by 1:30. And like others have said, it's too short now for me to ...

Re: What Would It Take to Keep You?

They would stop the nonsense that it's the one "true" church. Of course, you throw that out and I don't know what it would even look like anymore. Who would wear their stupid underwear if they didn't have to? Prohibit family members from weddings? Pay 10% of their income to an institution that won't...

Re: What are you reading right now?

I just finished rereading Chaim Potok’s The Chosen and My Name is Asher Lev . Before that I read Jonathan Haidt’s Coddling of the American Mind and Johann Hari’s Lost Connections . I have a stack of books and I’m not sure where to go next. A biography of Bing Crosby during the war years, I’m plannin...

Re: Trying to balance beliefs and kids and all of the church stuff that comes with it... the jfro update

I wish I had something helpful to say. When I told my husband I don’t believe last month he kept repeating something along the lines of how can we raise the kids if we have different beliefs? “But we have the same values,” I would reply, but it is so hard for those who are in to understand that and ...

Re: Abducted in Plain Sight

I haven't seen it, but a TBM friend of mine mentioned it to me a couple weeks ago. It reminded me of when my in-laws gave their retirement to their hometeacher to invest for them and my husband and brother in-law confronted them about it. "He's our hometeacher, he wouldn't do anything bad to us!" (M...

Re: The gospel for dummies

There's only one class now, the gospel doctrine class. It's made for a crowded SS in my ward. Yep. There was discussion in our ward on how to make GD more welcoming/useful to the people who attended GP. Leadership decided that SS would be taught to the lowest common denominator (investigator/new me...

Re: Book Club? The Happiness Hypothesis by Jonathan Haidt

I’ve read and enjoyed two of Haidt’s other books recently and am not opposed to reading this one, although it seems from the reviews that as the book was published in 2006, it contains some outdated ideas about anti-depressants.

I forget that I'm playing the long game, and try to push a bit on her thinking. It never ends well, and I need to remember not to run faster than she has strength, yada yada. So isn't this the difficult thing? Husband and I are having a conversation, and I hold back because I think to myself, "long...

Yep.

I don't know that anyone can really understand this unless they've been there. I don't have any advice or thoughts to share, I'm just someone in a similar situation. My TR expires this year and I don't know if I should renew or not...

From Wikipedia on the use of birth control in the Oneida Community: To control reproduction within the Oneida commun...

Re: Does truth really matter?

Does truth really matter? Isn't this the post-modern problem we're in now? For a couple of decades the idea that truth is subjective has permeated the culture and as a result we have people who believe the earth is flat, antivaxxers, and people who believe essential oils are better than antibiotics....

Re: Does truth really matter?

Lately I've been feeling like humanity may not be able to overcome tribalism and the problems associated with the intertwining of emotion and logic, interfering with our ability to make rational decisions on behalf of the species. If we don't nuke ourselves or the Universe causes our mass extinctio...
