Re: How do you label yourself regarding your belief?

I think some "miracles" can be explained but some makes one wonder. How do you explain those that seem too unlikely to have happened? For me, - I've seen enough normal stories turned into miracles/supernatural events after enough time or enough retelling to reject any non-first-hand miracle claims ...

Re: We seek praise and to be praiseworthy

I think you can always find connections with a few things, good food, music, appreciation of nature, health. We're all just people, live, laugh, love and all that. This is a great point. It's something I've known intellectually but struggled to actually implement. It is hard for me to get past the ...

Re: Spent a few hours with family

I'm sorry to hear your grandmother did that to you. Was it actually pleasant at times?

My family had our annual advent gathering recently. It was a mixed experience.

Advent with Extended Family

My family had our annual advent gathering recently. It was a rollercoaster. Good: - Singing Christmas songs together - Sharing a few gifts - Reinforcing our connection Bad: - The story of how at the school Christmas concert the arrangement of "I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day" was so powerful beca...

We seek praise and to be praiseworthy

I ran across a great quote recently from Adam Smith, the "Invisible Hand" Scottish guy from economics. Man naturally desires, not only to be loved, but to be lovely; or to be that thing which is the natural and proper object of love. He naturally dreads, not only to be hated, but to be hateful; or t...

Re: The Ward Weirdo and other stereotypes?

The mean old guy

The Aussie or Kiwi family who is allowed to swear because they aren't swear words where they are from

The lady who makes even the most terrible news into something positive. Then she gives a talk that's a how-to guide for toxic positivity.

Re: How do you label yourself regarding your belief?

I'm a misotheist. (That means that I hate God, not that I worship Japanese soup. Although...) I was enormously relieved to find that there is a word for it, and that it's not even all that uncommon of a belief. I'd never heard of misotheist. Is that theist or atheist or both? Like, from a theist pe...

Re: Relaxed mission attire

But the Mormons, they are the ones who read it and ring anyway, because they aren’t just any religion, they are special. Normal people have and respect boundaries, but the way the church operates, it teaches disrespect for boundaries. You get called to an appointment with no idea what it is about. ...

Re: Are Converts more likely to leave? If so, why?

My dad is an adult convert. For him I think the church was where his skepticism of the world led him and he is happy there. He is conspiracy-minded and the church has enough in the doctrine and culture to check that box for him. It's odd, because if he pointed his conspiracy thought beam at the chur...

Re: My mom

She did respond, saying in part that therapists in general get her angry. I learned this from my therapist, relaying their conversation. I'm just trying to get my mom to understand my point of view and not dismiss it because she thinks I'm inferior to her, and maybe disabuse her of all the anti-tra...

Re: Solution to Brethren/LGBTQ War

Cut down on the number of times you preach on the the subject. Eventually stop preaching on the subject for several years. Turn the culture war into a generation war. Pit the older generation that remembers all the harmful teachings against a younger generation that never heard them, then gaslight ...

Re: My mom

I put my therapist in contact with my mom, and I've learned that therapists in general get her angry. Did your mom speak with the therapist, or just get angry at the thought of it? I tried to bring my DW to therapy with me to work through the issues related to my faith transition and discovered the...

Re: Declining church-goers and creative changes

Like others have said the church organization is not currently setup to make such massive pivots. In fact they have been steadily going the opposite direction for decades. Taking away interesting activities and forcing everything to be tied to something doctrinal. Standardizing everything. The garde...

Re: What to Say to Son

The high of sharing that I don't believe the stuff at church was followed the next day with a low of attending the Priesthood Preview. Quite an emotional beating. The primary president had to stall for a few minutes before the bishop arrived and shared her experience growing up watching the boys adv...

Re: What to Say to Son

That sounds about as good as you can expect and I love that his response was to get back to gaming. Sometimes with these things the anticipation is so much worse than the actual conversation, but glad it went OK - someday he'll probably want to know more about your story, but this way you at ...

They were told that the population has become too aware of the missionary uniform which allows people to consciously avoid the missionaries. The new relaxed mission clothing requirements will allow people to have more natural conversations with missionaries. Seems the white shirts and ties have bec...

Re: What to Say to Son

It’s done. DW and I wrote out everything and agreed on it beforehand so there were no surprises. All the details of my beliefs and story were removed, but I’ve got a lifetime to share that if my son cares. He seemed to understand but wasn’t too shocked. He got bored and wanted to get back to the vid...

Re: Impermanent Ward Relationships are Still Real

Link, hey we've got NOM right? I guess I do have a "co-worker" at church that I have become "friends" with. But when my calling ends, the relationship probably will too. I like my co-workers but I don't really hang out with them after work, except once in awhile. I guess it could be fun to join a b...
