A different Q15 --------- Question #5 (Chastity--is it getting hot in here?)

This is for encouragement, ideas, and support for people going through a faith transition no matter where you hope to end up. This is also the place to laugh, cry, and love together.

Do you live the law of chastity?
Yes, according to how it was explained to me in the temple.

Wow! That's quite a list (what you said, but I didn't quote). I went to the site.
The law of chastity applies not only to behavior but also to dress, speech, and thought. Latter-day Saints are counseled to dress modestly, to use dignified language in speaking of bodily functions, and to cultivate virtuous thoughts. Accordingly, they are to avoid anything pornographic in literature, movies, television, and conversation.
It doesn't say anything about billboards advertising City Creek Mall, so I guess we're good.
Do you make fart jokes or belch jokes? Then you aren't living this law.
Are you single, but daydream about sex to take the stress off? Then you aren't living this law.
Do you wear tank tops or shorts if you are female? Then you aren't living this law.
Church leaders recognize only one standard of chastity for both men and women.
Oops. I guess males need to make sure they aren't showing shoulders or knees either.

“No sexual relations except with your husband or wife of the opposite sex to whom you are legally and lawfully wedded.“
When I first went through, they would say to the women, "No sexual relations [might have used the word intercourse] except with your husband to whom you are legally and lawfully wedded."
And, to the men, they would say, "No sexual relations [might have used the word intercourse] except with your wife to whom you are legally and lawfully wedded."
When they changed it, I thought that was rather dumb for a church that was against gay marriage because it was the perfect wording. John can say, "I'm worthy of a temple recommend. I only have sexual relations with Jim to whom I am legally and lawfully wedded." And I thought maybe they'd done that on purpose, to have it in place for the day gay marriage was allowed in temples.

And then... Along comes the "November Policy". ZING!!!

I do think they'll back down on their hate for homosexuals, just like all of the other social issues that they eventually change, years and years after they should. I'll be long dead, but maybe my kids or grand-kids will get to see it. (From outside of mormonsim hopefully...)

Although I do not agree wth the church's very intrusive way of involving itself in our most personal lives, I believe in "chastity" as a term for define our personal integrity in intimacy, and our loyalty to our partners. I expect honesty and integrity from a spouse, and give the same in return.

It disturbs me to know that Joseph Smith used sex to control others in the context of a church and also to create a "special, secret club" of predators and victims. Early followers musts have been terribly confused and conflicted, and if they were in isolated frontier areas, they were also trapped. The journey to and settlement in Salt Lake created a "bird's nest on the ground" for predators such as Brigham Young.

So, yes, I have a personal moral compass regarding chastity. And I have zero respect for the church's guilt-fest through TR interviews and the disgusting history of the early church.
This :)
God is Love. God is Truth. The greatest problem with organized religion is that the organization becomes god, rather than a means of serving God.

Yes. I am faithful to all my spouses. All of my spouses are also celebrity ninja astronauts.
The magical mathematical properties of the empty set...
As a NOM I get to redefine the definition of chastity. I would define it as not cheating in a committed relationship and not bringing children into the world outside of a committed relationship. And obviously consent is paramount.

They seem to be following the pattern they did with polygamy. "Everyone" still thought they would never back down, up until Woodruff went to Washington and lost. It still took until the second manifesto for it to be more "official policy" instead of a manifesto pretending to comply. I don't know how that would pan out if they tried that in this case.

This! 1000 times THIS! I too have my own code of ethics when it comes to chastity and always have. Though I toed the line while an active member today I am a bit more liberal. I do believe though that if married or in a committed relationship fidelity is what I would expect from my partner and of myself. My definition of chastity though doesn't include the additional items on the list
-Dress,-Speech,-Thought,-Literature,-Movies,-Television,-Conversation,-Bodily functions
I don't recall ever having chastity explained to me in this way. So when I answered "yes" to that question when in a TR interview I was not including the behaviors included on the list. To answer that question today would produce a different answer.
