A different Q15 --------- Question #11 - WOW
A different Q15 --------- Question #11 - WOW
Each day, for the rest of May, please share your honest response to each temple recommend question, based on what you believe right now.

#11
Do you keep the Word of Wisdom?
-
Personal thought:
The WOW has DOs and DON’Ts.
Why is it, if you DO the DON’Ts, you can’t get a TR.
But if you DON’T do the DOs, you still can.
Why is church leadership selective?
The question is ‘do you keep the WOW?’, not ‘do you keep part of it?’

Re: A different Q15 --------- Question #11 - WOW
In the intro to the WofW, it says it's not supposed to be by commandment or constraint.
That.

Re: A different Q15 --------- Question #11 - WOW
Nope, but honestly I never really kept it prior when you consider eating meat sparingly and all that jazz. You know, everything in that gets ignored. You'd think D&C 89 said in its entirety:
"By commandment; abstain from alcohol, tobacco, coffee, and tea. Amen. "

Re: A different Q15 --------- Question #11 - WOW
Yes, pretty much.
Although as a NOM, I don't feel guilty about eating my favorite coffee flavored chocolate bar. I don't think I will partake of alcohol. Alcoholism runs on both sides of my family. I think I'm better off not knowing what I'm missing. I think tea tastes like hay smells. And I only like coffee flavor if it is balanced out by chocolate. I'm not going to smoke. I saw what that did to my jackmo grandparents.
I wish WOW was taught with more love and kindness at church and I wish they paid attention to the DOs as well. Just think if they taught it like: Love your body, take care of it physically. Eat a balance diet. Your body is wonderful and beautiful. Treat it with kindness." Instead it's always "Your body is a temple and you had better not mess it up by putting alcohol into it." or "Look at all of those people who have to use coffee to wake up, how sad blah blah blah." Basically they take what could be useful advise and use it to shame and marginalize others. Classic church.

Re: A different Q15 --------- Question #11 - WOW
I still follow the modern LDS version that matters for the temple recommend interview, and I'm not really tempted to bother changing my habits at this point. I did have some tea a couple years ago that might have been the wrong kind, but I don't know enough about tea to say for sure. (I didn't really care either way.)

Re: A different Q15 --------- Question #11 - WOW
I keep it the way most members interpret it. At times I think I would like to try some things just because I never have, but it is not worth upsetting the apple cart and providing evidence that I only want to leave "so I can sin".

Re: A different Q15 --------- Question #11 - WOW
I was very faithful to the WoW as a member - I felt I'd given my word to the church, and it was important to me to follow the WoW (even though some of it was patently silly to me). I had to stop drinking coffee when I joined, but that was the only change I had to make. And I dearly loved coffee.
Now that I have resigned, I'm still pretty conservative, but I started drinking coffee right away, and was glad those java beans were still waiting for me after years of ignoring them in grocery stores. And I confess there are some bottles of a white and delightsome drink chilling in my fridge.
As I told a local leader when I let them know I was leaving, I can drink coffee and wine, and JS can molest teenage girls and wives of other men, and we will see who gets to the Celestial Kingdom first.

Re: A different Q15 --------- Question #11 - WOW
I can almost say a full yes to this, since I have drastically reduced my meat consumption for environmental reasons. I do not follow the hot drinks clause, because I am betting my life and soul that mildly flavored hot water will neither kill me nor send me to hell.
Re: A different Q15 --------- Question #11 - WOW
Yes I observe the WoW.
Next time I interview for my TR I am going to say No. Then expound how I have not been eating whole grains and vegetables like I should. That I have been eating too much meet, and that I have not been drinking beer like the WoW recommends.

Nope. I say this as I have a pot of coffee going.
I got DW a coffee maker with a built in grinder for Christmas. We love that thing.

No, not really. But I am confident that I have consumed far less coffe and alcohol than Joseph or Brigham.

Re: A different Q15 --------- Question #11 - WOW
Actually, I do. I don't like coffee too much (I used to drink it as a teenager to keep awake at school and never acquired a taste for it); same with alcohol, just don't like the taste. Starting to smoke seems like a stupid idea too. But cherry coke zero? Sign me up for that!
I eat badly though; lots of cholesterol with little exercise. So frankly, it's stupid that I'm seen as a righteous dude while all you healthy coffee drinkers are probably following the spirit of the WOW way more than I am. It's rather silly.

Re: A different Q15 --------- Question #11 - WOW
Let's see. Sometimes I eat too much meat. I don't eat much wheat. I don't drink hot drinks (I drink coffee warm when I drink it). Strong drinks? Sometimes. I don't eat enough plants/herbs. I don't use tobacco, not even for sick cattle. Using wine only for the sacrament? Sometimes I drink it when I'm not having the sacrament, but usually that's only when I do.#11
Do you keep the Word of Wisdom?
In a nutshell: sort of - but it isn't a commandment, anyway.
There are 2 Gods. One who created us. The other you created. The God you made up is just like you-thrives on flattery-makes you live in fear.
Believe in the God who created us. And the God you created should be abolished.

Re: A different Q15 --------- Question #11 - WOW
Great answer! Ironically, I have cleaned up my eating habits since I stopped going to church and am much healthier and lighter. I have supplemented my balanced diet with a daily coffee and once or twice a month I have a glass of white wine. DH also is physically healthier and has added coffee and a Friday night beer to his diet. It helps that we don't have to spend 3+ hours a week sitting at the stake center....2bizE wrote: ↑Sat May 27, 2017 9:37 pm Yes I observe the WoW.

Re: A different Q15 --------- Question #11 - WOW
I have found coffee to be a good health benefit to me. It calms me down. It helps me fall asleep when I need sleep. It's also supposed to help the brain - and doctors used to prescribe it for heart patients (I don't know if they still do).
