 It did inspire the the title of the playlist. I can't pinpoint a specific reason, but it's not a song I really enjoy listening to. Nothing in the lyrics, it may be the composition of the song as a whole that doesn't work for me.

Personal Jesus by Depeche Mode and Dear God by XTC if you're leaning atheist. Blasphemous Rumors by Depeche Mode is a good one to help remind us how silly it is that God would save one person from an accident and allow others to die.

Only the Good Die Young. Billy Joel.

'dear god' by xtc would definitely be on my list.

I think I might add 'god is a real estate deleloper' by michelle shocked... For anyone not familiar with this little gem, look it up... I loved this song when I first listened to it on 'short sharp shocked' back in the late 80's... here are the words. enjoy!

God is a real estate developer
with offices 'round the nation
They say one day he'll liquidate
his holdings up on High
I say it's all speculation

He may be an absentee landlord
This may be a low rent universe
The roof may need repairs
but at least the floor is there
And the rent is not due 'til the first

So save one last dance for the Saviour
when that final Hail Mary is said
Life is a dancehall
That's why we've got all those
little angels dancing around with pinheads

The Lord Almighty, Limited
And his chosen elect
Sit on the Up on High Development Board
quoting the bible as they hoard
The Good Book has a new look, I suspect.

Songwriters
MICHELLE SHOCKED, M. FOX
and in the end... the love you take is equal to the love you make...

I can't comprehend this. Mind blown.

I really enjoyed "Dear God". Sadly, Michelle Shocked isn't on Spotify. I'll have to find that some where else.

Great song! You know how there are some songs that you never critically listen to the lyrics? This song was that way for me until now.

Here's my contribution:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UUd3-b8AlqY
Shovels and Rope wrote: was it something that I said
that turned your laughter into lead?
did I pin too much of me onto you?
or was I just too blind to see?
it wasn't love but sympathy.

but I still pinned all of my longing onto you
you were dark and bitter cold
you're eyes were fixed upon the road
when you said, "what did you expect
that I would do?"
that's all there was to say

the wind just blew my words away
I guess I'll pin my loneliness onto you
funny how I'm in my darkest place
on the sunniest of days
when I think of all the time we waste...

did she melt you with her glance
when you couldn't help but watch her dance
did she pin that warm desire onto you
did she whisper something crass as you were filling up her glass
did she pin a little smile onto you
did the smell of her perfume
hang like a target in your room
well tell me what could you expect a man would do
and did you start to love her lesser
when you started to undress her
as she pinned all of her fire onto you

funny how I'm in my darkest place
on the sunniest of days
when I think about all the time that gets wasted...

talkin' to my brother
making plans about the summer
he said, "I'll pin a little lesson on to you
because I'm older and I'm smarter
and my life has been much harder
brother let me pin a little knowledge on to you

he said, "religion is an act
learn to trust your gut
and don't ever let 'em tell you what to do"
I said, "that sounds pretty nice I think I'll follow your advice
before they pin that sorry story on me, too.
I won't fall for that one twice.
I believe I'd rather roll the dice
keep on rollin' till I know just what to do."

While it may not have anything to do with religion, I feel like the Pretender by the Foo Fighters might fit on a list like this.

allow me to make a correction... 'god is a real estate developer' is from captain swing, not short, sharp, shocked... mixed up my albums (old age, ya know)... still like this song despite the controversies the singer has been involved in throughout her career, but more recently in the last few years. it seems that she's lived quite the life... one thing I found interesting and I saw it on Wikipedia, which we know how accurate that is... anyway, according to that michelle started out on the Mormon path being raised in the faith by her Mormon mother... that might explain things...

slow day in the office...
and in the end... the love you take is equal to the love you make...

Sir Elton John

I´m still standing

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5JfvAPZGjds

You could never know what it's like
Your blood like winter freezes just like ice
And there's a cold lonely light that shines from you
You'll wind up like the wreck you hide behind that mask you use

And did you think this fool could never win
Well look at me, I'm coming back again
I got a taste of love in a simple way
And if you need to know while I'm still standing you just fade away

Don't you know I'm still standing better than I ever did
Looking like a true survivor, feeling like a little kid
I'm still standing after all this time
Picking up the pieces of my life without you on my mind

I'm still standing yeah yeah yeah
I'm still standing yeah yeah yeah

Once I never could hope to win
You starting down the road leaving me again
The threats you made were meant to cut me down
And if our love was just a circus you'd be a clown by now

You know I'm still standing better than I ever did
Looking like a true survivor, feeling like a little kid
I'm still standing after all this time
Picking up the pieces of my life without you on my mind

I'm still standing yeah yeah yeah
I'm still standing yeah yeah yeah

Don't you know I'm still standing better than I ever did
Looking like a true survivor, feeling like a little kid
I'm still standing after all this time
Picking up the pieces of my life without you on my mind

I'm still standing yeah yeah yeah
I'm still standing yeah yeah yeah

I'm still standing yeah yeah yeah
I'm still standing yeah yeah yeah

Just saw a link to this song on Reddit, and it made me think of this thread. (Scroll down for music video)

http://www.npr.org/2016/11/07/500671246 ... eo?ref=yfp

Lyrics

Troubled Cells There, beyond the windowsill Lies the child that we all dread An affront to our ease and our lassitude A thorn in our side How soon will she die?
Now every road I take, no matter how far Leads me back here again, convicted by your smile And every waking dream, and every wasted hour Seems veined with a disease that I cannot escape
Soft music plays on the gramophone A fire in the grate, arm around your wife’s waist Warms your crocodile tears As you think of the child under the cellar stairs When will she disappear?
If there’s no way through for you, there’s no way through for me I refuse the cool gardens, I reject my honored seat If there’s no way through for you, there’s no way through for me I don’t need the golden banners, I don’t need the vain embrace
Now, every road I take, no matter how far Leads me back here, convicted by your smile All is veined with a disease that I cannot escape For troubled cells do not a healthy body make

I have a hard time finding time to post much, but I've been wanting to reply to this thread because music has been an important part of my FT survival. Here it goes:

One that really resonated with me during the most painful and lonely part if my faith crises is:

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=QZweyIKNwX4

It really expressed my feeling of deep pain that was made worse by the inability of those I loved most to understand in any meaningful way. The line that says "how was I to know" reminded me that it really wasn't their fault, and it didn't mean they didn't care about me. I justed looked forward to the day when they would understand, which thankfully, for my wife, eventually came!

"Seek up" and "Mother father" by Dave Mathews

Another artists I've just recently discovered and love is Kacey Musgraves. "Follow your arrow" is fantastic:

Here is a good song for such a religious playlist. It is by Sarah McLachlan and I bet you have all heard it in the past:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1SiylvmFI_8

Would have listed the Tabernacle Choir's version of Norm Greenbaum's Spirit in the Sky, but it never got off the ground when the writer said that it was not supposed to be sung as a dirge and Church policy at that time prohibited anything which you could tap your toes to as "degenerate hippie music which was planted by the Adversary along with assorted dinosaur bones and boxes of Velveeta cheese".
Good faith does not require evidence, but it also does not turn a blind eye to that evidence. Otherwise, it becomes misplaced faith.
