Priesthood Session Wrap-Up

Post by Mormorrisey » Sat Sep 30, 2017 7:00 pm

C'mon, fellas, I can just imagine MoPag sitting there going, "and no priesthood session write up? What's WRONG with these dudes?" Like every Relief Society complaining about the priesthood EVERYWHERE. So I'll bite, and to salute the hard work of MoPag, I will give my thoughts on the session, which was one of the most bizarre I've seen in a while:

Renlund = Payload/Rockets and the priesthood. Huh?

Evans = Keep your Covenants, even though you need to doubt your doubts. Best part I got, was that keeping the commandments leads you to truth. Huh?

Haynes = Have integrity, which means that you are righteous. Huh?

Utchdorf = HUH? It was like listening to a Jean-Paul Sartre audiobook. "The light, and the darkness, it overtook my mind like the shadows of regret..." As many of you know I'm a fan of the silver fox, but this talk was a Laurie Anderson tune come to life. I still have no idea what he's getting at.

Eyring = Don't criticize your leaders, even if the criticism is true. I know that was really Oaks, but that was the gist. And that was the ONE talk I understood, when normally I have no clue what Eyring is talking about.

So that's it, I don't know how many others suffered along with me, but that seriously was one messed up session. And I don't know why my computer changed Oaks to Darth Vader, that's a neat trick!!
"And I don't need you...or, your homespun philosophies."
"And when you try to break my spirit, it won't work, because there's nothing left to break."

Nice job Morrissey!

I listened between running errands and feeding the kids. It wasn't too controversial and did its best to be inspirational. My 16 yo DD watched the whole thing to guilt me since I was watching football when it started.

I don't know about setting things up so it automatically changes O-a-k-e-s to Darth Vader. That so would not have happened on NOM.1. And if it did, I suppose I would have had to moderate it even if I didn't want to because I not only agree, but think it is hilarious. Yea NOM.2, yea not having to be a moderator, yea for allowing a sense of humor, yea for being irreverent.

Thanks Mormorrisey!! That was an awesome write up! I was a little too burned out to even listen to priesthood. Although I might have to go back and listen. Renlund and priesthood rockets?

  I was so confused his morning! I was like how the hell did I accidently type Darth Vadar instead of O-A-K-E-S?

He kind of looks more like a Lord Voldemort to me. But I can see him as Vadar too. Someone should be Voldemort though. But not Aunt Wendy's husband. I like calling him Aunt Wendy's husband.

I went 0-3 today but checked in on the write ups earlier.

Thanks Mopag for taking one for the rest of us.

Looks like Darth Vader crashed NOMference weekend! I couldn't tolerate any GC this time around so glad to see we can laugh at it. Surely if DHO can hate our gay family members and friends, then we can be a tiny bit irreverent.

I'm shooting for 0-5 and will call it a successful weekend.

Yeah, WTH was that all about? After listening to that last podcast on Radio Free Mormon about PH blessings (which was fantastic) I was very interested to hear the church's explanation of what PH power is all about. I had trouble following the analogy from the beginning, but I was hanging in there until he said "PH keys", then I checked out. My eyes glaze over and my brain shuts down when I hear that. I think they just spin a bunch of nonsense words together when describing the PH, with the implication being...."yeah, it's real technical, don't worry about the logic behind it, just do what we say and pay your tithing and you'll have superpowers! What, your superpowers don't work? You looking at pron or something? Well, you're probably not being obedient enough or it's not God's will... just keep focusing on doing more of everything we say and it'll work!"

Thanks MoPag and Mormorrisey for the write ups!

My brother and I went tonight. Normally we go with my father and my son comes along. This year my son was working and my dad was out of town.

We sat through the first batch of speakers and bailed at the intermission song. I have no idea what the rocket had to do with anything unless it was a veiled reference to the priesthood antenna.

The rest of the talks we're background noise as I played solitaire.

I think it was an analogy about impregnating women. Made more sense that way.

A talk by someone that thinks the opposite of faith is doubts.

OMG, the whole time I was half expecting him to angrily say that people should stand for the national anthem. Though I did like the story about his father not taking bribes.

I think the whole talk was trying to be profound about the light of Christ filling the universe. Didn't do much for me.

On one level I get it. The church is made up of volunteers (at the local level) and it's much more difficult to do things in an environment where everyone is criticizing each other. It's probably easier to stick out a bad leader until they get released than it is to deal with lots of criticisms at the local level, so they spin this narrative about not believing that the leaders are infallible but acting as if they are. But yeah, another leader worship talk.

Easily the lamest session of conference thus far. After the intermediary hymn when Eyring announced two more speakers I was concerned for a moment that we were going back to the 2 hour PH session format. I think it ended up being 1h 45m. With everyone I've talked to, orthodox or otherwise, everyone seems to enjoy the 90 minutes session format much more than the 2 hour format. I'd really like to see the church make all sessions 90 minutes, it certainly makes the sessions more manageable. Those extra 30 minutes are the difference between, "Wow, the session is almost over" and, "The session is only half over! It feels like forever!" Keep your audience wanting more. Cut the session times.

God picks Mormon leaders, and he never gets it wrong, Eyring says

Perhaps it was a Quorum challenge to see who could deliver this message with a straight face. I could almost see Elders Paul H. Dunn and John C. Bennett slapping Elder Eyring on the back (with their spiritual hands) and congratulating him on completing the challenge.
Good faith does not require evidence, but it also does not turn a blind eye to that evidence. Otherwise, it becomes misplaced faith.

I avoided both sessions and went to visit TBM family later that afternoon. I didn't know that I walked into the beginning of PH meeting, and got to listen. What a fun time. Hahaha. I probably deserve it. Now I'm sitting here for Sunday morning session. I'm trying to come up with a scheme to escape before the afternoon fun begins. Sigh.

Was it Evans that had had the microphone so close that it was rubbing against his chest the entire talk?

I imagine a William Law high-five as well. And half the Q12 in the Kirtland years.

Phallic symbolism and the priesthood. I'm sure a better comic than me could find a good joke there.

Just as the generative power (the self-same generative power which is wasted on pornographic images) was given to men only, so was the Priesthood of God, which includes the power to generate worlds without end.
