Weird or not

Post by Korihor » Mon Dec 05, 2016 1:35 pm

Last night, My MIL FaceTime's for a little sunday night chit chat. We FaceTime about 1 per week to let the cousins see each other and everyone has a nice time.
After our kids go to bed, Mrs Kori and her mom have a little talk. MIL has a special question for Mrs Kori.

As shared in other stories, I have a SIL that has left the church. Mostly over the emotional hurt is causes her as a widow. SIL no longer wears garments and hasn't for a little while. MIL ask Mrs Kori if she would like to have SIL's garments. MIL just can't throw them away, because.....they're garments. So she offers Mrs Kori the opportunity to receive some hand-me-down spiritual fabric for some intimate sisterly love.

Weird or not?

Weird. My believing self would have said to dispose of them properly. They are, after all, also underwear.

Uh...did Mrs. Kori accept? And does SIL know that they are being offered? Why does MIL have them? So many questions.

Definitely weird. Temple ceremonial clothing, I can see.

Weird.

Everything about garments is weird.

It's just hard to see the weirdness of a weird organization from inside the weird organization...

They are not "underpants", they are garments of the holy priesthood. It is not an allowed LDS concept to think of this offer as "hand-me-down underpants" even though it is. The orthodox, administrative answer is simply to cut out the marks and throw away the garments. But that's not what is actually happening here.

This offer from your mother-in-law is not really about gently used clothing. It's about preserving something she feels is holy and testing if Mr. & Mrs. Korihor also feel that way. How you respond is going to nudge your relationship in some direction. I wish you well in figuring out which way this goes.

Weird? No, not at all. I'm all sorts of people would think it absolutely normal for a devout MIL to pass on SIL's hand-me-down spiritual Underoos. /s
Ugh!

I'm with Corsair on this one. Whether your MIL intends it or not, this is a set up that will likely change the dynamics of your relationship with MIL unless you can finesse your way through this.

Best of luck Kaptain Underpants,
Zack

I agree with Corsair. She's floating a balloon to see how your wife reacts to garments. Basically she got a FaceTime word version of the garment feel up.

It's not as weird as the washing and annointings. But what is?

Garments are the hairy mole on your third grade teachers face. Everyone knows they're there and disgusted by them, but can't seem to get rid of them because they're part of the mormon identity.

Dieter's the only hope for a garment-less future. He's got to become prophet and convert the church's love affair with garments and modesty to the Europeans beach going attire. Speedo sized garments only worn to the temple. Nude for night time attire.

I hate garments!

BINGO!

This same conversation last night sparked the email that I posted earlier "Letter to my MIL" MIL asked if we still believe in the Birth of Jesus story. MIL is planning some christmas activities.

MIL was unpacking Xmas decorations and found her nativity set. She thought it would be nice to set up the nativity with the Grandkids and read Luke II. A tradition for many TBM families.

Yours Truly has effectively f**ked up this tradition (as well as everything else) and made her second guess her plan. She was on the verge of tears when she called. Regarding the miraculous birth of Jesus, Mrs Kori said "I really don't know, I just don't know". After that, MIL said "If that's your answer, I'm not even going to ask Korihor!"

SIL and her daughter live with MIL and FIL. SIL has lived with them since her husband passed away nearly 5 years ago.

SIL Probably doesn't know they are being offered, SIL would probably say "Mom, stop! That's really wierd" That being said, I don't know fo' sho'

Mrs Kori is going back to SLC next week to for the holidays. I'll fly there just before christmas. Mrs Kori said she "would take a look" when she gets there. Mrs Kori thinks it's weird, but it trying to be kind to her mom. Mrs Kori's cold-hearted heathen husband would be far more blunt.

NOTE: I think Mrs Kori is close to stop wearing G's, but I don't want to get my hopes up.

Background, of my MIL's 5 kids, Mrs Kori really is the Golden Child. Mrs Kori leaving the church has been much harder on MIL than any of the others.

Weird is really subjective in Mormonism.
JS using a rock in a hat.
JS being visited by angel with flaming sword.
Temple ceremony.
Writing names on pieces of paper for them to be blessed.
A mysterious force called the priesthood.
Wearing someone else's magic underwear isn't too weird if you believe all the other stuff.

This is all kinds of weird, but is is far from abnormal. That situation has happened in my family. While we are on this topic I have a funny story to relate.

Dressing the dead is a responsibility I have shlepped. Outside the Mormon corridor, funeral homes will offer a time after embalming when religious rites can be performed. This is when the priesthood men, or women as the case may be can put garments on the corpse if he/she was endowed. My father was doing this for a deceased member of his ward along with a couple other men. As it turns out, someone forgot to bring a pair of garments for the deceased. Rather than drive home to get the purchased pair, one of the guys just took his off and donated it. He said, "Good thing I showered this morning!"

Won't that be lovely for the poor old guy in the morning of the first resurrection?

I shop at Goodwill. I have no problem wearing 2nd hand clothing.

Even I shudder when I walk by the underwear and lingerie section at Goodwill. I'm even more shocked when I see people buying it.

I'd find a women in 2nd hand lingerie from Goodwill 1000% more sexy than a women in garments. Am I weird or not?

I'd probably find a crack addicted women who smoked her remaining meth tooth to oblivion while wearing 2nd hand lingerie from Goodwill more attractive than a harem of Joseph's wannabe women in fundy undies!

Wait, whom I kidding? I would love to live in the celestial kingdom!

There are websites that have example porn of both of those (or so I've heard). Are you recommending that we "test" each type of picture to see which causes the most arousal?

I had a theory when I was a believer that the CK would be nothing but nudes. Clothing was to cover our nakedness because they were ashamed. However, in a state of no sin, no lust, etc. there would be nothing to hide, and thus no need for clothing.
