This is for encouragement, ideas, and support for people going through a faith transition no matter where you hope to end up. This is also the place to laugh, cry, and love together.

I've never really met someone who said being a member of the church makes them happy, who would not have been a happy person anyway. Most of them just don't know any better.

Gotta give some points for starting with Tolkien.

My wife said this often when we talked about church, and I tried explaining to her that she would still be a good person without the church and she believes she would immediately become a drug addict sitting in an alley somewhere. That tactic works well. :(

I have rarely been happy - but since resigning, there is less fear, less pressure, and more freedom - so the odds of having more happy moments is pretty strong.

Third unremarkable talk in a row. +5 for the hobbit reference.
The church has engineered your eternal family into a commodity that can be purchased with an annual fee. The fact that full tithing payment is a requirement for saving ordinances is the biggest red flag imaginable. Hagoth

Without the Church, I would have been a sexually active teenager and, most likely, have gotten pregnant at 14-16 just because I wanted a baby so much (I had no clue of the realities involved, obviously).

edit: but I wouldn't have felt guilty about it. It would have just been a learning experience.

I like the way he is using the hobbits to relate to a gospel principle. Even if I don’t agree with the doctrine. It is still a fresh view. +10

I like Uchtdorf's positive "don't quit" message. "Our choices reveal more about us than our abilities."

Those are some simple ideas I wish my kids could absorb a bit more of.

-5 for assuming joining the church strengthens family bonds for everyone. It patently does not.

Standard plan of darnation talk. Meh. +5 for Tolkien. I could dock him for failing to be the progressive voice he has sometimes been, but that would be holding him to a higher standard. Another +5 for imagery. +5 for teaching unconditional love. +5 for his approach to missionary work, despite his unjustified confidence in the product. I can't dock him for sincere belief in this pig in a poke.

If I could really have a voice in the church, it would be different. The leaders have told me that I don't get one, though. I can only do what they say or leave.

I guess the talk works for me if it's okay to consider the church to be Hobbiton.
