BYU-I Censors Anatomy textbooks

Post by deacon blues » Sat Apr 30, 2022 2:54 pm

You tube post on a textbook at BYU-Idaho blocks out the genitals on pictures of the human body. I can't believe this..... well yes I can. :o

God is Love. God is Truth. The greatest problem with organized religion is that the organization becomes god, rather than a means of serving God.

I would suggest that it should just be called BY-Idaho. To suggest, in anyway, that this is a real university is both a joke and a disservice to actual universities.

I suppose bills will be introduced in both the Utah and Idaho legislatures mandating that all anatomy illustrations be similarly censored. I am uncertain whether the University of Utah will have sufficient influence to fight this if the LDS contingent of the legislature (90% of them) supported this idea.

I hope the Big-12 take this opportunity to examine what they've gotten themselves into just for the sake of football.

My high school in rural Idaho showed the uncensored diagrams, similar ones anyway. To my knowledge, no one in my very religious community had any complaints. This instructor at BYUI is an embarrassment to all educators. I think people like this are so fixated on the porn-panic displayed at church that they forget common sense.

Of course, if there is any effect from this type of action on porn use, it will be to increase it.

I guess it hasn't occurred to them that these kids actually have genitals, and have seen them? Also, in the video the girl is looking at the diagrams online. You know, where kids go to look at genitals.

I'm sure that that is just what everyone studying medicine needs: To specifically avoid any study of certain parts of the human body that could be deemed "dirty". What could possibly go wrong?

Wow! ... just ... wow.

On a side note, since BYU-I did not print the materiel in question, could this be considered a violation of copyright? The school is changing someone else's work (presumably) with out the author's consent and then reselling it to a 3rd party (the students).

Further evidence of decline in LDS culture towards more religious fanaticism and fundamentalism. Our culture used to have a love of and a thirst for knowledge and learning about everything. This is so sad and pathetic. We are marching towards further alignment with ultra orthodox evangelical Christians.

Thanks for posting this DB and it's good to know but very sad for my people and tribe.

J. Worthington Smythe, Acceptable Curriculum Committee wrote:"BYU will not allow this so-called 'anatomy filth' to be taught in our university, where young minds are still being filled with the fullness of the Gospel. As Elder Holland emphasized, we will sooner cancel all biological science classes than permit such materials to be taught at the Lord's University."

Have you seen the woman's response video to how the professor responded to her original Tik-tok post? She said the professor reached out to her, was very understanding, apologized, will make changes to his lectures, and told her that the videos she posted will have no adverse effects on her standing in the class. So this professor seems to have handled this situation quite well, IMO.

Good to know. That's a win! I'm glad to hear it.

I believe it. I worked as an adjunct BYU-I professor in the 2000s. I was reported to the prophet for showing “porn” in my classes (I showed a tasteful birth movie (which I obtained from the department library) in Child Development & a video of a (changing) pregnant woman’s body) in Psych 101.

I hoped that censoring (and student freak-outs) would’ve decreased in the last decade. I guess not.

Yikes.
When I was in art school at Utah State, a student who had transferred from BYU was amazed that our life drawing models were nude. He said at BYU they wore full-body leotards. I have since been told that they don't even do that anymore. They tell you to look elsewhere for that kind of training. I haven't verified that claim outside of the person who told me.
