Club-Q shooter was not an ACTIVE Mormon

This is for encouragement, ideas, and support for people going through a faith transition no matter where you hope to end up. This is also the place to laugh, cry, and love together.

Club-Q shooter was not an ACTIVE Mormon

The church is quick to point out that he has not been recently active. Apparently all of that bigoted indoctrination doesn't affect you if you're inactive, you have to reinvent it on your own, without any implications concerning your upbringing. We will probably never know, but I can't help but wonder if any of this was motivated by self-hatred over feelings he was not allowed to feel as an LDS youth.

It is terribly sad, regardless of the causes. This kind of thing just shouldn't happen.

"We join with others in mourning the loss of those whose lives were taken and offer prayers of comfort and deepest condolences to their loved ones," said an official church spokesman who appeared to be hiding something, possibly a musket, behind his back.

Failing the inactive argument, they could always claim he was acting as “a man and not a member”. It must be nice to be able to nuance all your evils away by playing with words so that TSCC can still be the one perfect institution on earth.

By the way, in the early 90s I myself was a very inactive college student but still had very homophobic opinions based on my church upbringing. Mormon beliefs don’t just wash off you the minute you walk out of a church building

It was Mormonism that taught him his queermisia. It doesn't matter that he isn't active now.

Mormonism taught me my queermisia too, and it took me years to unlearn all of it, and I'm still unlearning, even though I have since learned that I'm queer myself.

I should add that this unlearning didn't happen magically once I stopped going to church. It was an active effort.

No doubt the Church helped with his formative homophobia.

Sounds like he was following Elder Holland's pleading to discharge his musket fire. Take the man out of Mormonism, but not the Mormonism out of the man,
Good faith does not require evidence, but it also does not turn a blind eye to that evidence. Otherwise, it becomes misplaced faith.

I immediately thought of Holland's musket fire talk as well when I heard about this. I wonder if Elder Holland has any regrets about that horrific talk.

I saw a comment about this on Facebook I think that really shows how the church frames their membership numbers, but they said something like 'The church loves to boast 16 million members until it doesn't.'

Funny how they are quick to throw inactive members under the bus yet include them every year for the PR stats.

The shooter's father, Aaron Brink, was interviewed by the Denver CBS news affiliate and said, "You know Mormons don't do gay, we don't do gay, there are no gays in the Mormon church. We don't do gay." He's pretty much just quoting Bednar.

Besides being Mormon, Brink's most notable accomplishment is his career as a porn star under the name Dick Delaware.

It's hard to feel sympathy for a mass murderer, but this kid had a very twisted upbringing in which Mormonism played a big role, despite anything the church spokesman says

So, I assume the shooter has been excommunicated from the church? Or is he protected by Holland's musket directive?
