What improvements would you want for church?

Post by 2bizE » Fri Oct 21, 2016 11:43 pm

So, I don't attend church every week, but do 3/4 Sundays roughly. I have more recently tried to listen more intently in SM. Not really for the message, but out of respect for the poor saps, my friends, who have been asked to speak. Sometimes, I'm not too involved. I almost always search NOM.
I have a few suggestions for improvements at church.
My kids have recommended to the Bishop they be allowed to ride their hover boards to pass the sacrament.
I think the benches need fold down trays, like on a plane, to place my kindle on.
I also like the idea of power plugs and USB charging ports.
Cup holders would also be nice.
What would you recommend for improvements?

Can only think of three things right now:

1. Greater honesty in Church history.

2. Acceptance of diversity among Church members. Specifically, let Gays be gay, let NOMs be free to think and express their thoughts, and realize that we should never encourage Mormons throughout the world to adopt the provincialism of Utah culture. Making others adopt Utah culture would be like requiring the French to eat only Velveeta Cheese.

3. Disengaging the Church from politics.
Good faith does not require evidence, but it also does not turn a blind eye to that evidence. Otherwise, it becomes misplaced faith.

On the local level:
-dispensers for "a diet soda that shall remain nameless."
-headphones that let you tune to another station when things get really boring
-make the sacrament like testimony meeting, anyone who feels inspired to do so can bless and pass the sacrament
-lessons that are actually designed to teach you something, not just cheerleading, indoctrination and shaming
-let it be a volunteer organization: stop tallying home teaching visits, holding PPIs, requiring tithing settlement...
-fewer meetings that have no purpose other than checking off a box (e.g. stake priesthood meeting)

On the church level:
-financial transparency
-the end of authority: leaders valued by the value of their insights, ideas and example, not by hierarchical intimidation
- christian mission for the church's financial holdings: people valued more than real estate
-stop using the Lord's name in vane (pretending to speak for him when they're just enforcing they're own agenda)
-stop selling signs and tokens for money: eliminate both the secret signs/combinations and the fee.
“The easy confidence with which I know another man's religion is folly teaches me to suspect that my own is also.” -Mark Twain

Jesus: "The Kingdom of God is within you." The Buddha: "Be your own light."

where to begin?

how about shortening the block meeting schedule on sunday - 3 hours. really? while we're at it, why don't we just eliminate a whole lot of useless meetings and allow the members to spend time with their families, which you keep telling us is an important thing to do, but you make it really difficult for someone with leadership callings to do...

and then, treating the gays nicer would be a good start. all lgbtq+ individuals more precisely. 'the policy turned revelation'? don't even get me started - it was the final straw in my decision to distance myself from 'the church'...

a keurig machine in the kitchen would be a nice addition - we'll bring our own pods, but it would be lovely to be able to brew a cup to help keep us going during that marathon 3 hour sunday block of meetings...

wine in the little cups during sacrament would probably boost the attendance numbers and would probably lead to more people willing to help do the sacrament 'clean up' after the meeting...

let's drop all the 'one true church' talk. please. it became hard for me to swallow 'the one true church' when i discovered that it appeared that i'd been lied to and manipulated to buy into it all... and frankly, i kinda feel like an idiot that i completely, totally and fully bought into it. granted, i was a 13 year old in a not so great situation looking for something good to cling to, but even as an adult, i did what you told me to, relied on 'faith' when i didn't understand things and doubted and i'm glad that i can finally see things from a different perspective...

oh, and quit telling people who pray and get an answer that doesn't agree with what you want them to feel to keep praying for an answer. what you might as well just come out and say is 'keep praying until you get the answer i want you to get'...

that's enough for now. i'm sure i can think of lots of other things to improve...
and in the end... the love you take is equal to the love you make...

Go for more art. Choose trained musicians (when you have them) to be the choir director/pianist/organist/conduct the hymns. Sing the hymns faster. Teach people how to conduct hymns during SS. Let organists play Bach for prelude/postlude. Put "Come thou fount of every blessing" back in the hymn book. Bring back the nice arrangements we used to hear the Motab sing during conference. Let guys wear colored shirts again. Let women wear pants. Drop ties and tights.
All of these require no doctrinal change whatsoever!

Changes to music would be a great improvement. I would like to see other musical instruments used including the guitar. If you have ever been to church in a foreign country, Mexico for example, the church has the standard pianos, but few, if anyone, can play them. On the other hand, many could play the guitar. Just another example of church leader stubbornness trying to control local customs.

I would encourage new chapels and Temples to have stained glass. While it might not lead to new light and knowledge entering our Magisterium, the windows could immediately shed light on the local level.

I can only think of one that that would improve church for me. MAKE IT TRUE.
