HBO's Room 104: The Missionaries

Room 104 s01 e07 http://www.imdb.com/title/tt6870564/?ref_=tt_eps_cu_n

Two Mormon missionaries lamenting no converts. They pray for a sign and a porno suddenly appears on TV. Where is the spiritual uplift in that, huh?

It would be better if BYUTV were to make a missionary portrayal, starting with young Elder David Lister knocking on on the front door of his first house and then stepping inside. It could be followed by a Kubrick-like 2001 montage of Elder Lister's life from baptizing the entire family of that first house, to his victory homecoming at the airport, to his ward debriefing ceremony, to his marriage a few months later, to his graduation from BYU, to holding his first child, to being surrounded by grandchildren, to his funeral were Elder Floyd C. Backer would make it a missionary opportunity, to his standing in a room full of white sheets and knocking at the veil.

It would have it all, full of LDS ethos and pathos right there on the screen. Now that would be a worthy missionary video. Would need to check with the correlation committee to see if they would prefer Thus Spake Zarathustra or Come Come Ye Saints during the closing credits?

Anyway, what are your thoughts regarding this program or missionaries in general?
Good faith does not require evidence, but it also does not turn a blind eye to that evidence. Otherwise, it becomes misplaced faith.

Ha! Many people here were not even born when Stanley Kubrick's film 2001: A Space Odyssey came out in 1969. The reference to the montage shots of the last ten minutes of the movie would ring very few bells, besides, there is no explicit proof the Monolith ever appeared to Joseph Smith, nor has it been seen anywhere on the grounds of Temple Square. Any testimony of the Monolith as this point is purely suppositional.

Oh, ye of little faith!

Heavenly father wouldn't send porn as a sign! I know him better than that! Stop drinking coffee, talking about urges and come pray!

Clearly not mormon missionaries--drinking is easier than porn, and the white bible was orange!
It's frustrating to see the last resort in a discussion of facts be: I disregard those facts because of my faith. Why even talk about facts if the last resort is to put faith above all facts that are contrary to your faith?

Since i just watched it...
Episode starts with 2 elders entering the motel room, discussing how poorly the work is going but with faith they get a baptism. Senior companion starts talking about a fenale investigator who was very interested, and junior companion points she was..in the senior compaion, which SC denies.
JC states hes starting to have doubts since he feels hes wasting his time, has "urges" and tried coffee a few weeks ago. SC is shocked at the coffee confession, and insist they pray together for his forgiveness. JC counters with offer to pray for a sign, which SC relucantly agrees to do. They sit on their respective beds and start "heavenly father..." when the tv turns on in the middle of a steamy porno (you only hear it). Jc insist its a sign, sc insist its not (i sat on the remote by accident!) And convinces jc to forget about it and go to bed, insisting hes helped jc with his doubts.
Sc companion wakes in middle of night to catch jc sneaking back in..with beer! They start talking and jc mentions/explains about st augustine, and how sinning made him a better saint. (Sc of course has no idea who hes talking about) Rationalizes they should sin, it will make them better missionaries, and HF wants them to do it--its why he turned.on the porn!
Sc buys it, and they each drink 3 cans of high life, watch the porno and masterbate, trying to hide it from the other talking about girls they find attractive at home and "almost" sinned with. They go to bed, jc happy sc clearly troubled.
Sc awakes, find jc returning with coffee. Jc is happy, explaining he feels free wants to keep exploring ect. Sc is troubled, says it was a mistake they need to repent, ect. Jc starts to come on to sc, and sc companion takes the advice of packer, and swings as jc tries to kiss him. Jc falls, hitting his head on thr nightstand.
Sc runs over, cant find a pulse, tries cpr, insisting this should woke....it doesnt. Beer cans and coffee.cups everywhere, sc struggles with idea of calling for help. Sc starts praying/pleading for things to be ok and jc magically awakes. "Was i..." he ask
"Ya" sc replies "but now im..." "uh huh". They stare at each other, then jump up, starting getting dressed, talking about their proselytizing plans, how they know theyll find an investigator....then stop, and look at each other. They jump onto the beds, towards each other presumably for elder on elder naughty time as credits role.

Honestly, it does feel like it more or less would be byutv instead of HBO as doubts lead to sin and sin leads to them losing their salvation while they insist they are on the right path.

Totally not believable. No way would either of them know who St. Augustine was.

I'll admit to doing a garment check, though. They were impressively accurate with the details.
