Given the ripe environment for cons in the LDS Church, I’m honestly surprised this kind of thing doesn’t happen way more often than it does. If serial predators had any idea how easy the pickings are in the Church, they’d be joining in droves.

Predators try to join the church to con the members, but the missionaries and bishops see through it with the spirit of discernment and stop them every time.

We all know that the Church creates the perfect environment of trust for a con man to work in. It’s easy to see the family as stupid - which they were - but they had also been conditioned to be trusting and helpful to their fellow ward members.

Exactly. He earned their trust to the point where they did things they normally would not have done. No inkling that maybe they should listen to a gut feeling or an uncomfortable feeling over this "good man". He was an excellent con artist, and imo very evil. He would stop at nothing to twist and manipulate things to get what he wanted.

Their crime was that they trusted too much - but that's what is taught. As far as leaders go, in fact, it is hammered in under threat of hell.

I think they have a lot of guts to be part of a documentary and explain how stupid they had been. If that can save someone else from a similar nightmare, then them opening up is worth it.
