I think you have that right, nibbler. There's a whole host of work force volunteers. Saves the church millions, I expect.

I have no idea what counts as a service mission.
I believe many of the service missionaries are basically church employees that don't get paid.

Kishkumen, I think your numbers are probably the most accurate I've seen to date.

So 140,868 is members who were taken off the rolls in 2018. Interesting if you factor in data from other sources.

Quitmormon.org processed 15,629 resignations last year and had 12,486 people who were actually removed from member rolls. So about 0.1% of members requested/resigned during 2018.

If you take the 140,868 that were removed for any reason, and then factor in the 128,000 Kishkumen says would have died, then 12,868 people had their names removed for one reason or anther. That's only 382 off more than quitmormon.org got removed. You figure that some resigned the traditional method and others were ex'ed. My gut tells me that the actual number of people to resign/excommunicated, it somewhat higher. Makes sense considering that Kish used actual average life span compared to the 125 age limit that the church uses. Since the church waits an extra 36.9% before the count someone as death, we can guess that the actual number removed for death is about 37% lower, so the church removed 80,691 due to death. That means that 60,177 had their name removed, and 47,691 were done via traditional methods or via excommunication, nearly 4xt he amount that quitmormon helped with.

While the number of deaths is very much a guess,it does change the picture of things quite a bit.

One more thing. Kish also says that real church growth is around .45%, or 72,000/ year that stay active after one year, but 60,000 leave. So the actual net growth is about 12,000 member for the year, or 0.074%!

Yikes!
