Raising a heathen child.

We were listening to Bert E at Sunstone last night on the literary origins of heaven and hell.

9yo: He's not supposed to say h.e....

Me: he means the place, he's not telling anyone to go there.

9yo: (listens to part of Adam and eve story): I dont get it.

Me: so he's explaining what people used to think was how people were made.

9: no I get THAT, but I don't get it.

Me: like you know people used to think the world was flat and made stories to explain.

9: no I get THAT, but I don't get it.

Me: its like philosophy....its a way of thinking there's not one right answer to how people used to think.

9: OH I dont care about that. But...like...you know they used to have these birds, that were....kinda like a chicken but not a chicken. And they eventually laid an egg, that eventually was a chicken.

Me: Yeah but they didn't know that then.

9: oh I get that. But what I dont get, is that someone, somewhere had to be the parents of the first people and if they weren't people they were different than people a little until they had people!

Me: yeah.

9: so who was it?

Me: remember Lucy at the Smithsonian.

9: yeah! So whats this all about then? (Waves her hand at sunstone).

‐‐--------later‐-------------

19 yo showing me a dopey viral video about a Noah's Ark based video game review...basically stupid college humor.

9: I dont get it.

Me: what?

9: why is Noah bringing a pig if pigs were unclean? That makes no sense.

Me: Huh. I was just wondering why the pig has a top hat.

The pig leads to the Great Jewish Dilemma - free ham.
Good faith does not require evidence, but it also does not turn a blind eye to that evidence. Otherwise, it becomes misplaced faith.
