Death of the Prophets Question

Post by 2bizE » Sat Mar 12, 2022 7:55 pm

Suppose there were a fast spreading, deadly plague…I realize that may be something difficult to conjure….and in a matter of a day or two this plague killed all of the FP and Q12. What would happen with the church? Would anyone be left with the appropriate Keys of the restoration?

Not sure about any keys, although it would be a shame for those solid gold bathroom fixtures in the SLC Temple 4th floor to go to waste for lack of a key. I imagine the Office of the Presiding Bishop would seek control over the corporation.

Self-styled Mighty and Strong candidates would start coming out of the woodwork immediately.

The prophets are kinda dead already.

Did we get any revelation about the incoming Covid-19 virus?
Did the Tongans get any revelation about a volcano that was about to destroy their country?
Did Ukrainians get a heads up about the coming war?

What's the use of a PSR if they don't P, don't S, nor R.

I'm pretty sure the presidency of the Seventy would just have themselves confirmed as the new First Presidency in the next conference. They would call apostles from among their Seventy cronies and life would go on as normal. Those guys are just as capable of praising and quoting each other and failing to do anything prophetic or apostolic, just like their dead predecessors did. The saints would weep with joy at what a blessing it is to have the guidance of a living prophet in these the latter days. We would be told it was a miracle that God chose this amazing moment in time to call our valiant leaders home to work with our new earthly leaders from the other side of the veil.

There is no-one with superkeys, nor are the keys spread about amongst the 12.
Otherwise there would always be a designated survivor....

The lower bodies of the priesthood enmasse have access to the keys of the next higher body all the way to the top. Those keys are inactive unless the higher body fails to exist for some reason.

DC 107--the odd letters inserted here and there are footnote references...
21 Of necessity there are presidents, or presiding aofficers growing out of, or appointed of or from among those who are ordained to the several offices in these two priesthoods.

22 Of the aMelchizedek Priesthood, three bPresiding High Priests, chosen by the body, appointed and ordained to that office, and cupheld by the confidence, faith, and prayer of the church, form a quorum of the Presidency of the Church.

23 The atwelve traveling councilors are called to be the Twelve bApostles, or special cwitnesses of the name of Christ in all the world—thus differing from other officers in the church in the duties of their calling.

24 And they form a quorum, aequal in authority and power to the three presidents previously mentioned.
...

26 And they form a quorum, equal in aauthority to that of the Twelve special witnesses or Apostles just named.

27 And every decision made by either of these quorums must be by the aunanimous voice of the same; that is, every member in each quorum must be agreed to its decisions, in order to make their decisions of the same power or validity one with the other—

28 A majority may form a quorum when circumstances render it impossible to be otherwise—

29 Unless this is the case, their decisions are not entitled to the same blessings which the decisions of a quorum of three presidents were anciently, who were ordained after the order of Melchizedek, and were arighteous and holy men.

30 The decisions of these quorums, or either of them, are to be made in all arighteousness, in holiness, and lowliness of heart, meekness and blong-suffering, and in cfaith, and dvirtue, and knowledge, temperance, patience, godliness, brotherly kindness and charity;

31 Because the promise is, if these things abound in them they shall not be aunfruitful in the knowledge of the Lord.

32 And in case that any decision of these quorums is made in unrighteousness, it may be brought before a general assembly of the several quorums, which constitute the spiritual authorities of the church; otherwise there can be no aappeal from their decision.
...

35 The Twelve being asent out, holding the keys, to open the door by the proclamation of the gospel of Jesus Christ, and first unto the Gentiles and then unto the Jews.

36 The standing ahigh councils, at the stakes of Zion, form a quorum equal in authority in the affairs of the church, in all their decisions, to the quorum of the presidency, or to the traveling high council.

If you really want to know, the best place to look would be the Articles of Incorporation for The Corporation of the President of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

I don't know about "keys" or any "scriptural" woo-woo, but Corporate™ succession? Yeah - check the legal documents. If not there, then ask KIRTON|McKONKIE.

EDIT: After a bit of research in another thread, it seems "The Corporation of the President of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints" has been disolved, and "The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints" has actually become a legal Corporation. So back to my original statement: If you really want to know how succession works, look at the Articles of Incorporation of the former Trademark™ which has been newly incorporated.

Forget who gets the keys. The real question is who gets the checkbook

Hagoth and dogbite for the win.
