Soundtrack of the NOM

I wanted to restart this thread from the old site. I love listening to songs that help me work through my faith transition, even if they weren’t intended to do that.

So, to start this off, here are a few on my current playlist.

Trapdoor Social - Sunshine
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QuZkY_yDIDM

O.A.R. – I Go Through
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AZv8S806y_Y

Through Fire – Stronger
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GlpP5PO6wbk

Fair warning, the last song has some expletives in it.

This one really spoke to me, the video especially. Thanks for sharing. My current favorite NOM song is:

Florence + Machine - Delilah

My delightfully apostate daughter loves Florence Welch. The arty and interesting songs of Florence + The Machine probably helped feed my my daughter's loss of faith down to a benign indifference to LDS thought.

Glad you like it. I think it represents the attitude I try to maintain.

Delilah is a good one too.

I've been on a Slipknot kick lately. Saw them in concert in September and have become a little obsessive.

From their most recent album, a song that really hits me in the feels.

If Rain is What You Want

You've definitely posted a few songs I haven't heard. I like the Regina Spektor song. I still remember listening to her song "The Call" at the end of one of the Chronicles of Narnia movies. I was mesmerized by it.

Here is a song that evokes the reign of Brigham Young in both the Kingdom of Deseret and the later Utah Territory:

I was in the mood for some neurological tingles (The Spirit™ ?) via the Musical Three Nephites today, so I thought I'd share...

Rush - Bravado
RUSH! wrote:If we burn our wings
Flying too close to the sun
If the moment of glory
Is over before it's begun
If the dream is won
Though everything is lost
We will pay the price,
But we will not count the cost

When the dust has cleared
And victory denied
A summit too lofty
River a little too wide
If we keep our pride
Though paradise is lost
We will pay the price,
But we will not count the cost

And if the music stops
There's only the sound of the rain
All the hope and glory
All the sacrifice in vain
[And] if love remains
Though everything is lost
We will pay the price,
But we will not count the cost

I would love to hear the Tabernacle Choir sing this song for General Conference.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BSLPH9d-jsI

It would be fine with me if some General Authority followed this rousing song with a plea to Dovahkiinize our lives with the help of a product line of Dovahkiin T-shirts and notepads. I know I would love to order one of these Dovahkiin T-shirt if they were available in extra-penguin sizes. Even critics would give a shout out to our Grey Beards while wearing these shirts.

Bet Mrs. Zadok would love to have a Dovahkiin magnet for the vacationing tour bus. It would be a hit with the onlookers from Brookings, Oregon all the way to the Area 51 Cafe in Roswell. It would exhort the Gospel of Talos to all who beheld it.

If any of you listen to this, please note the close resemblance between the ancient Dragon Tongue and the Reformed Egyptian language. This stands as a form of proof in and of itself.

But would the Deadric Lords Nelson and Oaks approve of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir wearing either fur or hide armor during GC?

Watching the Wheels - John Lennon

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XM2Oh4pS304

People say I'm crazy doing what I'm doing,
Well they give me all kinds of warnings to save me from ruin,
When I say that I'm o.k. they look at me kind of strange,
Surely your not happy now you no longer play the game,

People say I'm lazy dreaming my life away,
Well they give me all kinds of advice designed to enlighten me,
When I tell that I'm doing Fine watching shadows on the wall,
Don't you miss the big time boy you're no longer on the ball?

I'm just sitting here watching the wheels go round and round,
I really love to watch them roll,
No longer riding on the merry-go-round,
I just had to let it go,

People asking questions lost in confusion,
Well I tell them there's no problem,
Only solutions,
Well they shake their heads and they look at me as if I've lost my mind,
I tell them there's no hurry...

I'm just sitting here doing time,
I'm just sitting here watching the wheels go round and round,
I really love to watch them roll,
No longer riding on the merry-go-round,
I just had to let it go.

And you need blind faith
No false hope
Do you have blind faith?
No false hope
Where is your blind faith?
No false hope
Open your eyes, open your eyes
Step into the light

[Hook: André 3000 & (Q-Tip)]
(Kids) Kids, don't you know how all this sh*t is fantasy?
(Kids) Kids, don't you know how all this sh*t is fantasy?
(Kids) Kids, don't you know how all this sh*t is fantasy?
(Kids) For real (For real?) For real (For real)
Kids, don't you know how all this sh*t is fantasy?
(Kids) Kids, don't you know how all this sh*t is fantasy?
(Kids) Kids, don't you know how all this sh*t is fantasy?
(Kids) For real (For real?) For real (For real)

[Verse 2: Q-Tip]
I don't wanna get up now, I don't wanna go to school
I don't wanna be the best, don't wanna follow rules
Mom, I think you f*ckin' lied to me
Three stacks said all this shit is fantasy
It's my time, gon' put a little life to it
If life's a obstacle then I'mma bike through it
I see it like a kiddie on the carousel
If I 'url while I go around, what the hell

If I Only Had a Brain - 900 Ft. Jesus
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LA-AvBjBm5k

Suppose I accidentally got my sh!t together
Would I get a medal?
Or a pat on the back and a little feather
I could stick in my cap or pin it to my shirt
Go out in the yard and poke it in the dirt
Or leave it in the woods where it couldn't be found
If it fell over, would it make a sound?
And if it did, would it be the sound that you like?
Or should I do it over until I get it right?

You say everything I know is wrong
So do me a favor, and play along
For a minute
As the rusty gears turn
Don't be alarmed if you smell something burning upstairs
It's a little BB rolling around in a box car
See us together

Maybe it wouldn't be hard to explain
If I only had a brain

Somewhere On A Higher mental plain
I might learn to come in from the rain
If I had a clue would I still be here with you?
Gee Whiz, If I only had a brain

Right and Wrong
Joe Jackson
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gcd-WCtlcx4

Stop everything
I think I hear the President
The Pied Piper of the TV screen
Is gonna make it simple
And he's got it all mapped out
And illustrated with cartoons
Too hard for clever folks to understand
They're more used to words like:
Ideology
They're not talkin' 'bout right and left
They're talkin' 'bout
Right and wrong, do you know the difference?
'Tween the right and the left and the east and the west
What you know and the things that you'll never see

So what ya think
You like the Yankees or the Mets this year
And what about this latest war of words
And what about the Commies
I saw the news last night
All illustrated with cartoons
So when they come with that opinion poll
They better not use words like
Ideology
Or try to tell me 'bout the issues
Ideology
Whose side are you on
We're talkin' 'bout
Right and wrong, do you know the difference?
'Tween the right and the left and the east and the west
What you know and the things that you'll never see

Where are we?

Right and wrong, do you know the difference?

Remember to enjoy the Little Wonders. (Intro is slightly NSFW.)

Rob Thomas - Little Wonders
Rob Thomas wrote:Let it go
Let it roll right off your shoulder
Don't you know
The hardest part is over?
Let it in
Let your clarity define you
In the end
We will only just remember how it feels

Our lives are made
In these small hours
These little wonders
These twists and turns of fate
Time falls away
But these small hours
These small hours still remain

Let it slide
Let your troubles fall behind you
Let it shine
Until you feel it all around you
And I don't mind
If it's me you need to turn to
We'll get by
It's the heart that really matters in the end

Our lives are made
In these small hours
These little wonders
These twists and turns of fate
Time falls away
But these small hours
These small hours still remain

All of my regret
Will wash away some how
But I can not forget
The way I feel right now

In these small hours
These little wonders
These twists and turns of fate
These twists and turns of fate
Time falls away, but these small hours
These small hours, still remain
They still remain
These little wonders
These twists and turns of fate
Time falls away
But these small hours
These little wonders still remain

A couple more songs.

This one takes a more faithful tone, but mostly sends a good message. I picture my "apologist" self really liking the lyrics to this song.
Safetysuit - Numbers or Faith
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gef9qsBytTc

This one is somewhat faithful in its message as well, a "return to Jesus".
Mondo Cozmo - Shine
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mmZ1YI5vmD8

Sometimes I do like to listen to these kinds of songs, because they retell the story of where I've been. Like reading through old entries in my faith journal.
