Both the iPhone and Android versions of Fallout Shelter are free.

There's no accounting for taste, but I happen to take my iPhone app-age very seriously, so...

Social media:
Facebook
Twitter
Instagram
Reddit

(these are all improvements over using the sites in the mobile browser).

Games:
Clash of Clans
Clash Royale
Pokemon Go
Trivia Crack
Mario Run
Topps Star Wars Card Trader, Topps Bunt, Topps Huddle, Topps Kick, Topps The Walking Dead (if you liked collecting cards as a kid, this might hit the spot for you. I profited over $1000 buying and selling digital cards on eBay during 2015 when I was really into these apps, mainly the Star Wars one).

Entertainment:
Podcasts (comes with the phone, works fine for my purposes)
Spotify (or your choice of music service)
YouTube
Kindle (or your choice of e-reader)

Productivity:
Evernote (starting an extensive file of organized notes in all areas of interest has seriously changed my life).
Google Drive
Google Photos (all the free storage and none of the hassle of backing things up)

Finance
Any and all bank/credit card apps. (Set up Touch ID for best results.)
PayPal
Loyalty apps for any stores or restaurants you frequent or want coupons for.

Those are a few (heh) favorites/staples/must-haves. YMMV. :D

I think it would be funny to make a seer stone app for the iPhone.

The best mobile game out there is probably Desert Golfing.

iOS
Android

It teaches you about life.
