Brewsterites and the Oatman Massacre

I wasn't familiar with the Brewsterites other than maybe hearing the name in a list of Mormon splinter groups, but I stumbled upon this video the other day about an event known as the "Oatman Massacre" and found it interesting.

This is the only related post I could find on NOM. I'm unfamiliar with the show Hell on Wheels, but it's always fun to see Mormon history depicted in media.

There is a scene in Hell on Wheels where Brigham Young attempts to woo the Olive Oatman character (tattoo faced woman from a mormon breakoff sect) back into his fold. This meeting reminded me of that.

This is Olive Oatman, who was enslaved by some Native Americans who killed most of her family as they traveled to California:

Yep if you happen to watch Hell on Wheels on Netflix, Olive Oatman is the influence for one of the main characters with her famous indian tattooed face.

Scene where Brigham tries to get Eva (Olive Oatman) back into the fold (note some of the historical inaccuracy and liberties taken with the Oatman story:

Fascinating story!

The Brewsterites are an interesting group. As I understand it, David Whitmer became the leader if the Brewsterite church at one point, with James C. Brewster acting as the Prophet, Seer, and Revelator. Like Joseph, Brewster had been visited by Moroni and dictated books of scripture using a seer stone.

Disfellowshipped at age 11 in Kirtland for persistently claiming to be a prophet. Interesting guy!

Interesting. Early Mormonism WANTED everyone to be a prophet, so when you became one, then you got punished.....Lol! We didn't mean it literally you idiots! We meant it spiritually. There is only ONE literal true prophet, now all the rest of you shut up and get in line of obedience to him only.
