I hadn't heard this Imagine Dragons song before, listened to it this week and some of the lyrics hit me as NOM.
Imagine Dragons is one of my favorite bands. Did you know the lead singer, Dan Reynolds, was raised mormon? He actually posted on his facebook page back in November and stated "Religion is still a conflicted subject for me. That's ok. It breeds new songs." I am sure this is why the lyrics stood out to you as NOM. A lot of their songs have resonated with me as well, and it all made sense after I learned of the lead singers story/background. Here is his full post if you want to read it: https://www.facebook.com/IDdanreynolds/ ... 0067047527

Here is a few more I've been listening to over the summer. These are somewhat depressing songs.

Seether - Fake It
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gy8HPSIFXEM
Who's to know if your soul will fade at all
The one you sold to fool the world
You lost your self-esteem along the way
Yeah
Good god your comin' up with reasons
Good god your dragging it out
Good god its the changing of the seasons
I feel so raped
So follow me down
And just fake it if your out of direction
Fake it if you don't belong
Fake it if you feel like affection
Woah your such a fn' hypocrite
And you should know that the lies wont hide your falls
No sense in hiding all of yours
You gave up on your dreams along the way
Yeah
Good god your comin' up with reasons
Good god your dragging it out
Good god its the changing of the seasons
I feel so raped
So follow me down
And just fake it if your out of direction
Fake it if you don't belong
Fake it…

The Plot In You - Feel Nothing
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pjX3J9EpAr0
Before I say another word just know that my intentions were pure,
but you can't stand to be in silence,
all you can hear is your own voice,
fueling delusion in you and I'm just so sick of backing down that I might just spill it all,
and if I do you won't be coming back without a deep scar in your soul,
are you not sick of playing playing games, sick of giving blame,
sick of f'n living like the world has never given you a life defining day, and I can't relate,
and I feel nothing for you, I feel it's too late,
I've buried this and it's evident you won't change, I feel nothing for you
My mind is torn, I hate it but I long to feel what I felt before,
but you just keep moving towards me, what do I do what do I say,
can you kindly just refrain, what's here for me, why hide the truth,
that I feel nothing for you, broke away but you're starving for closure,
seem together but you know that I know ya,
know this is real, this is real

Here's one that has been on repeat for me lately.

Nothing but Thieves - Broken Machine
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hFdZle-TzK4

[Verse 1]
I'm just a broken machine
I can do anything
My wheels have started to jam
My wheels jam, my
I'm just a broken machine
With all the layers of dust
Some things have started to fail
Some things have
Some

[Verse 2]
I'm just a broken machine
Though the record may spin
All my lights have gone dim
They've gone dim
They've
I'm just a broken machine
Not who I used to be
I'm spinning out of control
Now it's time to go

[Chorus]
Take a little spark
From a battery
Electricity
And put me back together
Back together, yeah

Take a human heart
Add some vanity
Authenticity
And put them all together
Do whatever
To your broken machine

[Verse 3]
Hey I'm a broken machine
I can do anything
I've got nothing to hide
Now I start to dream
I'm a mechanical thing
With a layer of shit
And nothing bothers me now
My worries are out of my way

[Chorus]
Take a little spark
From a battery
Electricity
And put me back together
Back together
Yeah
Take a human heart
Add some vanity
Authenticity
And put them all together
Do whatever
To your broken machine

[Bridge]
My head goes forward and my heart goes back [x3]
My head goes, my heart goes
My head goes forward and my heart goes back [x3]
My head goes, my heart goes

[Outro]
Hey, I'm a broken machine
I can do anything
I've got nothing to hide
Now I start to dream
I'm a mechanical thing
I can do anything
Nothing bothers me now
Now I start to dream

I redid the words to this song in honor of Joseph Smith for the old NOM board, but now the matching lyrics for the lovely ladies of Kirkland and Nauvoo cannot be found. Here is the song anyway:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EK_LN3XEcnw

Although,

A little bit of Emma in my life
A little bit of Zina by my side
A little bit of Fanny is all I need
A little bit of Miranda is what I see...
Good faith does not require evidence, but it also does not turn a blind eye to that evidence. Otherwise, it becomes misplaced faith.

NEW FOO FIGHTERS is kick A$$!!!

DW and I just bought tickets, SLC in December. It's the only thing we want for each other for Christmas.

Run

Wake up
Run for your life with me
Wake up
Run for your life with me
In another perfect life
In another perfect light
We run
We run
We run
The rats are on parade
Another mad charade
What you gonna do?
The hounds are on the chase
Everything's erased
What you gonna do?
I need some room to breath
You can stay asleep
If you wanted to
They say that's nothings free
You can run with me
If you wanted to
Yeah you can run with me
If you wanted to
Before the time runs out
There's somewhere to run
Wake up
Run for your life with me
Wake up
Run for your life with me
In another perfect life
In another perfect light
We run
We run
We run
Run!
We are the nation's stakes
If everything's erased
What you gonna' do?
I need some room to breathe
You can run with me
If you wanted to
Yeah you can run with me
If you wanted to
Before the time runs out
There's somewhere to run
Wake up
Run for your life with me
Wake up
Run for your life with me
In another perfect life
In another perfect light
We run
We run
We run
Run!
Wake up
Run for your life with me
Wake up
Run for your life with me
In another perfect life
In another perfect light
We run
We run
We run
Run!

Wonder if testimonies could be bolstered by the words from this song from Man of La Mancha, sung by the very Mormon-like character Don Quixote:

BTW, can you see a little of Sancho Panza in Elder Ronald Rasband?

Here's to the great Tom Petty! Sorry to see that bro go :(

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aowSGxim_O8

She grew up in an Indiana town
Had a good lookin' momma who never was around
But she grew up tall and she grew up right
With them Indiana boys on an Indiana night
Well she moved down here at the age of eighteen
She blew the boys away, it was more than they'd seen
I was introduced and we both started groovin'
She said, "I dig you baby but I got to keep movin'...on, keep movin' on"
Last dance with Mary Jane
One more time to kill the pain
I feel summer creepin' in and I'm
Tired of this town again
Well I don't know what I've been told
You never slow down, you never grow old
I'm tired of screwing up, I'm tired of goin' down
I'm tired of myself, I'm tired of this town
Oh my my, oh hell yes
Honey put on that party dress
Buy me a drink, sing me a song,
Take me…
“Sir,' I said to the universe, 'I exist.' 'That,' said the universe, 'creates no sense of obligation in me whatsoever.”

Yes, I like this one,"The Line" and "The Sky is a Neighborhood" from the new album. Have fun at the concert, I'm jealous. My wife is not much of a Foo Fighters fan.

What's funny about the song "Run" is that it is so much slower than their song "Walk" (one of my favorites of theirs). I can't run while listening to "Run", but I can run while listening to "Walk". :)

Mormons might find great truth in Keats saying, "'beauty is truth, truth beauty,' – that is all / Ye know on earth and all ye need to know" from his poem Ode to a Grecian Urn, because it is a chiasmus. I think beauty stands on its own without a chiasmus and so I offer the following song as something of beauty.

Possible replacement hymn for Praise to the Man?

Eulogy- Tool
[2x]
He had a lot to say.
He had a lot of nothing to say.
We'll miss him. [2x]

We're gonna miss him. [2x]

Yeah, so long.
We wish you well.
Told us how you weren't afraid to die.
Well, so long.
Don't cry, yeah,
Or feel too down.
Not all martyrs see divinity.
But at least you tried.

Standing above the crowd,
He had a voice that was strong and loud.
We'll miss him.
We'll miss him.
Ranting and pointing his finger
At everything but his heart.
We'll miss him.
We'll miss him.

We're gonna miss him. [2x]

Yeah, no way, yeah, to recall
What it was that you had said to me,
Like I care at all.

But it was so loud.
You sure could yell.
Took a stand on every little thing
And so loud.

Yeah, standing above the crowd,
He had a voice that was strong and loud and I
Swallowed his facade 'cause I'm so
Eager to identify with
Someone above the ground,
Someone who seemed to feel the same,
Someone prepared to lead the way, and
Someone who would die for me.

Will you? Will you now?
Would you die for me?
Don't you freaking lie.

Don't you step out of line.
Don't you step out of line.
Don't you step out of line.
Don't you freaking lie.

You claimed all this time that you would die for me.
Why then are you so surprised when you hear your own eulogy?

He had a lot to say. [2x]
He had a lot of nothing to say. [2x]

Come down.
Get off your fetching cross.
We need the fetching space to nail the next fool martyr.

To ascend you must die.
You must be crucified
For our sins and our lies. [sic]
Goodbye...
And one more, we recently lost Canadian icon Gord Downie. I've always loved this song. So much fear is manufactured, especially by religion. The mormon church can make you scared but it's all just business.

Scared - Tragically Hip
I could make you scared
if you want me to
I'm not prepared, but if I have to
He said, I can make you scared,
it's kinda what I do
If you're prepared,
here's what I propose to do
You're in Russia
and more than a million works of art
are whisked out to the woods
So when the Nazis
find the whole place dark
They'd think god's
left the museum for good

I make you scared, if that's what I do
If you're prepared, if I have to
If I make you scared and you pay me to
If that's the deal
now here's what I can do for you

Now there's a focus group
that can prove
this is all nothing
but cold calculation

Tests have shown
that suspicious or hostile
Their lives need not be shortened
truth be told
they can live a long, long while
Tickled to death by their importance

If you make me scared,
if that's what you do
If I'm unclear can I get out of this thing
with me and you
If you feel scared, a bit confused,
I gotta say
this sounds a little beyond
anything I'm used to

Now there's a precious few
that can prove that at the root
This is all nothing but a cold calculation

Clearly entranced,
you're leaning back now
Defanged destroyer limps into the bay
Down at the beach
it's attracting quite a crowd
As kids wade through blood
out to it to play

OK you made me scared,
you did what you set out to do
I'm not prepared, really had me
going there for a minute or two
He said, you made me scared too,
I wasn't sure I was getting through
I gotta go, it's been a pleasure
doing business with you

Super jealous of ReubenHighland. I would love to see the Foos live.

I think another one of their songs that would fit in this list is The Pretender:

Keep you in the dark
You know they all pretend
Keep you in the dark
And so it all began

Send in your skeletons
Sing as their bones go marching in, again
The need you buried deep
The secrets that you keep are ever ready
Are you ready?
I'm finished making sense
Done pleading ignorance
That whole defense

Spinning infinity, boy
The wheel is spinning me
It's never-ending, never-ending
Same old story

What if I say I'm not like the others?
What if I say I'm not just another one of your plays?
You're the pretender
What if I say I will never surrender?
What if I say I'm not like the others?
What if I say I'm not just another one of your plays?
You're the pretender
What if I say that I'll never surrender?

In time our soul untold
I'm just another soul for sale, oh well
The page is out of print
We are not permanent
We're temporary, temporary
Same old story

What if I say I'm not like the others?
What if I say I'm not just another one of your plays?
You're the pretender
What if I say that I'll never surrender?
What if I say I'm not like the others?
What if I say I'm not just another one of your plays?
You're the pretender
What if I say that I'll never surrender?

I'm the voice inside your head
You refuse to hear
I'm the face that you have to face
Mirrored in your stare
I'm what's left, I'm what's right
I'm the enemy
I'm the hand that will take you down
Bring you to your knees

So who are you?
Yeah, who are you?
Yeah, who are you?
Yeah, who are you?

Keep you in the dark
You know they all pretend

What if I say I'm not like the others?
What if I say I'm not just another one of your plays?
You're the pretender
What if I say I will never surrender?
What if I say I'm not like the others?
What if I say I'm not just another one of your plays?
You're the pretender
What if I say that I'll never surrender?

What if I say I'm not like the others?
(Keep you in the dark)
What if I say I'm not just another one of your plays?
(You know they all pretend)
You're the pretender
(Who dares)
What if I say I will never surrender?

What if I say I'm not like the others?
(Keep you in the dark)
What if I say I'm not just another one of your plays?
(You know they all pretend)
You're the pretender
(Who dares)
What if I say I will never surrender?

So who are you?
Yeah, who are you?
Yeah, who are you?

Here are a few for the NOM top 40. From 'Wierd Alma'.

https://weirdalma.bandcamp.com/releases

There are 8 songs by Wierd Alma as of this posting. Some I like better than others, but this one is my favorite - "Tapir-back Rider..."
TAPIRBACK RIDER
Written and Performed by Weird Alma
Parody of "Paperback Writer" by The Beatles

See also: http://www.mormonthink.com/book-of-morm ... didntexist

Tapirback rider

Dear Mormons, wait, before you leave the pews
I have an article in the Deseret News
It explains how back in ancient Nephite times
They didn't have horses, so they had to be tapirback riders
Tapirback rider

It might be hard for you to get this thing
It's an explanation known as "loan shifting"
Joseph didn't know what a tapir was
So he said they rode horses,
but they really all were tapirback riders
Tapirback rider

Tapirback rider

You might be thinking something isn't right
Was the Book of Mormon translation loose or tight?
If cureloms, cumoms, and senines are words
Then why couldn't Joseph just have used the term "tapirback riders?"
Tapirback rider

I warn you, that sounds like apostasy
I have PHDs, so you should trust in me
It will all make sense if you believe it's true
If you have any questions, look my up, my name is TapirDan Writer

Back in the early 1960's a rather sweet song was released by the New Christy Minstrels called Today. Unfortunately, this song could not be performed at BYU because it contained the word "wine". The students needed to maintain their Mormon standards and that meant not singing the song. Times have changed but this would probably still get you confined and shackled in the Honor Code dungeon. Your only hope for freedom would be to make a daring escape northward past the Utah County border.

New A Perfect Circle video for their latest song. I like the fact it's a very basic video that makes you really think about the lyrics. I love the song more each time I listen to it.
