What does everyone listen to?

Post by jfro18 » Thu Feb 07, 2019 9:52 am

What music does everyone here like to listen to? I figure that could be a good place to start some conversation that maybe will lead me to some new music to try out!

I listen to mostly 90s music as I grew up with it and just still love it, but trying to branch out sometimes. So bands I usually listen to are:

Pearl Jam
Better Than Ezra
Ben Folds
Soundgarden/Chris Cornell solo stuff
Wallflowers
Smashing Pumpkins

After that I have a weird mix of stuff... 90s, movie/tv soundtracks, etc.

Soon will be a TV thread and then we can really get into game theory.

I listen to a real eclectic mix of music types. A lot just depends on what I am doing.

Working out:
Loud, angry music. Five Finger Death Punch, Gansta Rap

Working and hanging out:
Classical, 80's, Show Tunes, a couple of foreign radio stations (Russian Language). Lots of Podcasts and Audiobooks.
Illegitimi non carborundum.

This describes me perfectly with the exception of Russian radio and show tunes.

I'll add the Stand Up Comedy channels on Pandora.

I've found I cycle through different things according to my moods and figured out how to manage my over all mood by shifting my media content. If I'm down and blah, the comedy makes me laugh and improves my mood. If I'm angry and pissed off about something then the heavy metal and gangster rap fuel the fire. If I'm burned out and tired, classical music soothes my soul. Nostalgic? 80's and 90's music fits the bill. The key is to connect with my inner self and find what I like and need.

Yeah I should definitely add podcasts and comedy- those both get me through the day along with sports radio here sometimes.

Working at home lends itself to a lot of listening to music, podcasts, and binge watching TV shows when I'm on my feet packing boxes. Definitely change around by mood and all that good stuff as well.

Wow, Rubin's list is comprehensive!

When working - movie themes. Otherwise a lot of alternative rock, but I will listen to a bit of everything.

I think eclectic would probably describe my musical tastes too.

My musical device / playlist can include everything from The King's Singers to Godsmack, depending on mood. I'd say the only music I really never got into (can't stand) is rap (minus the Beastie Boys in their day.)

My kids are also thespians, so if someone isn't belting a show-tune in my house, there's usually one playing. (Or they're singing along to re-runs of The Office.)

How 'bout this related to music: What was the last concert / musical event you attended?

I am more song loyal than artist loyal. I like the whole kit and caboodle of music like many of you. I’ll post what I love/own (becuase why not?)

Soundtracks-
Phantom of the Opera
How to Train Your Dragon
The Fast and The Furiuos soundtracks- Batalha, Danza Kuduro, How We Roll, Payback, Meneo, We Own It, and Six Days
Hello Dolly (thanks Wall-e)
My Fair Lady
Tron (Daft punk and ost)
Guaridans of the Galaxy (both)
Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit
Zelda (Breath of the Wild, Skyward Sword, Ocarina of Time)
Kung Fu Panda
Yuki Hayashi- LOVE! Is he single? Composed MHA and Haikyu ost... so freakin inspiring and great workout music.

Artists/Fav song-
Mozart (and those other long dead guys)
Ben E. King- Stand by Me and Chuck Berry- Johnny B Goode
Bing Crosby (used to melt me like butter that voice...)
Frank Sinatra and the Rat Pack
Louis Armstrong
Harry Connick Jr.
James Taylor- Sweet baby James
Bones Thugs n Harmony- If I Could Teach the World, Crossroads (I loved 90s Hip Hop... I still have those BET VHS tapes somewhere)
Sting (all time favorite back in the day, Police too)
Paul Simon (and Garfunkel)- I am a Rock
Usher- I do like to watch him dance
John Legend
Small Pools- Dreaming, Street fight
Coldplay- they became a second Sting for me but I don’t listen as much now.
Pink Floyd- many to like esp. The Wall but all time fav is On the Turning Away... never sick of it
Kid Cudi- Pursuit of Happiness, Up Up and Away
Bastille- Blame is a current fav -“send my regards to hell,” but I loved all of Bad Blood
Owl City- had that one great album
Angels and Airwaves
Andrew McMahon in the Wilderness, The Cinema, Mike Snow (let’s group them)
Deadmau5- The Veldt has been a long time fav... Moar Ghosts n’stuff, here is one for you- There Might be Coffee
Naughty by Nature- Feel me Flow, Hip Hop Hooray
New Radicals- one album wonder.. but it was a good one
Twenty One Pilots- I like a lot of their stuff
Brooks and Dunn- It surprises me too
America Authors- Oh What a Life album
Muse- Starlight, Madness
Cheap Trick
Itstheknocks (thanks to someone on here)- Dancing with Myself, Dreaming, Trouble, Ride or Die, Make it Better
Swedish House Mafia
O.A.R.- Love and Memories
Guns and Roses- November Rain, Patience, Sweet Child of Mine

My current favorite Japanese bands-
Uverworld- Odd Future, Sora, Gekidou
Akeboshi- Wind
Amazarashi- Sora Ni Utaeba, Hero, Life is Beautiful, Boku Ga Omottanowa
Radwimps- Sparkle, Mountain Top, Nandemonaiya
Asian Kung-Fu Generation- Re:Re, Rewrite, Far and Beyond

I could add random favorite song like Come Sail Away by the Styx or Dancing in the Moonlight by King Harvest, Fortunate Son by Creedence C.R., Don’t Rear the Reaper by Blue Oyster Cult, or In the Year 2525 by Zagreb and Evans, and Insane in the Brain by Cypress Hill, or Jump Around by House of Pain, and All Along the Watch Tower by Hendrix, there’s also Love Me Again by Newman, Over the Hills and Far Away by Led Zeppelin, Party Up in Here by DMX (clean version is pretty funny), We Don’t Need Another Hero by Tina Turner, Rainbow Connection, thank you Kermit, or Right Place Wrong Time by Dr. John, and Shelter from the Storm by Bob Dylan, Something to be Proud of by Montgomery Gentry, and On Top of the World by Imagine Dragons because I sang that song in my head to help me run the Army 10 miler without stopping, but I think I already went overkill :)

This makes me feel old. (I am old) ;) I would list Beatles, Crosby-Stills-Nash-Young, Chicago- before they went easy listening, Earth-Wind-Fire, Santana, Bob Dylan, Paul Simon, etc. I do like Michael Buble, Norah Jones, tierney Sutton, Harry Connick. Most of my listening is Classical and mainstream Jazz. Guys like Josh Redman, Yellow Jackets, Sonny Stitt, Dizzy Gillespie, Frank Sinatra, and of course, Charlie Parker.

Lots of random R&B/pop (I need to stay relevant for my students)

Lots of 90's alternative

My favorite was probably Ryan Adams (just found out what I always suspected, he is really big jerk and creep- NY Times article this week).

I guess Wilco will be my new soundtrack for a while...

Pretty much everything, from ancient to modern. Well, OK, some rap isn’t music. It is just poor quality poetry set to a loud beat. But then some A. Hat was playing his loud at 11:30-2:00 am so today I may just be angry at rap.

But, I have CDs of everything from American First Nation, to Polynesian, to Celtic, to Gregorian chants, to classical (lots of classical) to movie soundtracks starting with the “movie soundtracks” called “opera,” up through Gilbert & Sullivan, Rogers & Hammerstein, Andrew Loyd Webber, Roger Williams. As well as some 70s, & 80s. Churchy stuff excluding MoTab.

I listen on the radio to classical or oldies or current hits, depending on mood and where we are. (There isn’t much by way of radio up where we live in Summer at Bear Lake but Western Cowboy music, so yeah I listen to that.)

My last concert..um..I will just name some that stand out as exceptional. Pavarotti when he was in San Antonio and sang with their orchestra. Fred Rodgers reading Peter & Wolf by T. Berlin Philharmonic. Boston Pops. Or, if you are talking about something besides symphony orchestras, um I have to go W—-a——y back to Simon & Garfunkel

Pretty much everything, though I'm not really partial to Country. Depending on my mood, it can be anything from dubstep to Debussy, B-52's to Bach, Thomas Tallis to the Tragically Hip.

Even within an artist/group there are things I like/dislike.

I don't listen to nearly enough music. I have a very respectable hifi. Yet I don't take enough time to sit down and use it!

I see a few CSN fans here :) I like dance music for driving: chemical bros, deadmauf. For work Fleetwood mac and coldplay. For listening some soul/funk I'm lucky enough to have caught the godfather of soul himself just a month before he passed.

Two tracks I feel the spirit from: let there be rock (Live) AC/DC and here comes the judge: Pigmeat Markham.

This year I've got tickets for Alice Copper and I will try and pick up tickets for the foo fighters if I can get time off work ( i work away a lot).
At the halfway home. I'm a full-grown man. But I'm not afraid to cry.

Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash, cool stuff on the radio.
