What are your hobbies?

Post by w2mz » Tue Oct 18, 2016 8:50 pm

I have been very fortunate to meet some awesome NOMs in real life who have similar hobbies to mine. I think it may be a good thread here to post some of our other interests so NOMs of a feather can flock together in other discussions as well. I'll go first:

I love the outdoors
Hiking
Backpacking
Camping
Fishing (fly and spin cast)
Archery (and the occasional bow hunt)
Fitness (some running, P90x, etc)
Skiing (water and snow)
Some guitar
Eating!
Also, some day I want to restore a classic VW. (Had one in HS)
The church has engineered your eternal family into a commodity that can be purchased with an annual fee. The fact that full tithing payment is a requirement for saving ordinances is the biggest red flag imaginable. Hagoth

When I was young and foolish, (I'm no longer young), I was a very addicted, hard-core small boat sailor. (Not the U.S. Navy).

I was commodore of the Great Salt Yacht club, Race Committee Chairman of the Great Salt Lake Yacht Club, Race Committee Chairman for the Island Yacht Club in Alameda, California, Secretary-Treasurer (2 years) for the Island Yacht Club, Skipper of the Yacht "Liberty" (PHRF-fleet), Skipper of the Yacht "American Eagle" (IOR-1/2-ton Fleet), First place winner of the Metropolitan Yacht Club Midwinter series, (Oakland). Sailing Master of the 53' Yacht "Aledo" (Alameda), I also was foredeck crew on the Ocean Racing yacht "Equation" (Long-Beach). And a nationally listed member of the United States Yacht Racing Union, and certified Judge for the United States Yacht Racing Union.

Now I just sit around and masturbate...

No, seriously, before I met my wife, I was intending to sail around the world, but marriage, family and financial obligations but an end to that dream. As a result, we are now embarked on a different adventure of driving around the country in our "Land Yacht" motorhome. Which is a 35' BlueBird Wanderlodge built by the Blue-Bird bus company. CAT-diesel engine, and we tow our Suzuki Grand Vitara behind.
If I'm a bird, why can't I fly?

I have a very time consuming job, but it does allow me a lot of flexibility. Some of my hobbies include:
Soccer- my kids all play on competition leagues. I also am an assistant coach on my youngest son's team.
Outdoors- camping, hunting, riding all-terrain video vehicles.
Going on long walks with Mrs. 2BizE.
Fly fishing- This is my solace. I don't fish very often, but I find it very relaxing. I'm teaching my boys to flyfish.
Sex- I once had a colleague back east who when my 4th kid was born told me I should find a different hobby.
Videos- I enjoy watching videos on Amazon that I never would have watched a few years ago.

I'm pretty sure this is what my wife secretly thinks I might be planning to do. The only one I am actually doing is "Leading the hearts of the children of my neighbors astray" since I do work with the scouts in my ward and I actively teach them critical thinking and pursuing non-church goals when they are around.

My actual hobbies are a little more esoteric including:
Network traffic inspection ("Oh, that's what you were looking at on the web")
Annoying my children with DNS exploits ("Youtube.com keeps redirecting you to a 'watchingpaintdry.com'? Weird")
Video games on the Sabbath ("Nuclear launch detected" [bonus points if you can name that game])
Waiting for "Game of Thrones" season 7 ("Westworld? Yes, probably")

Reading, especially historical fiction, really gritty, character-driven mysteries, some fantasy, and history -- especially 20th century and American Civil War, or British if it's about the Tudors or the Plantaganets

Sewing -- not quilting but RTW (or better) quality clothing

Camping and hiking -- although I live in the Midwest where it is miserable being outside 9 months out of the year (the older I get the less tolerant I am of our hot humid summers and our bitterly cold winters)

Conversation, especially with my kids

Awww the midwest! I moved from Illinois about 3 years ago. I see what you mean about 9 mos out the year the weather is horrible.... I don't miss that at all. And you are an avid reader as well. I recently delved into mysteries and just completed the Louise Penny, Gamache series. I am always looking for a new good read. PM me if you have any you'd like to recommend. :D

We're on the wrong side of the mountain this time around, over where it it is continually raining and never dries. But you are on the list for the next time we are up north. I need to check out your progress on the beer making front.
