New AP headline: Mormon church warning: Beware of those fancy coffee drinks

Post by jfro18 » Fri Aug 16, 2019 12:51 pm

How does the church manage to keep looking more and more out of touch with reality?

By releasing that official statement yesterday they are now getting national coverage and the headline alone shows just how ridiculous it all is.

Here NBC News' coverage: https://www.nbcnews.com/news/religion/m ... s-n1043156

So embarrassing... the Word of Wisdom is an absolute disaster in every way from what's in it, how it was implemented then, and how it's used today.

(And tell THE WORLD about it so normal, non-mormon folk can stay away from it.)

Janna Riess wrote: As coffee shops have become common in the United States, more young church members feel comfortable going to places like Starbucks and drinking iced coffee, said Patrick Mason, a church member and religious scholar who is the Arrington Chair of Mormon History and Culture at Utah State University. For past generations, just entering coffee shops was considered taboo, he said.
I like Patrick Mason even while i there is obvious disagreement between our conclusions about the LDS church. The church simply announces the commandment without providing the scientific justification or the historical development of the Word of Wisdom. Brother Mason is a believer and does not provide that kind of explanation either. I'm glad I'm still in a YM presidency so I can watch some of the youth come to terms with the Word of Wisdom in real time. It's very amusing. And coffee is delicious.

Interesting that NBC gives a slight nod to the "only call us COJCOLDS" demand and then proceeds to use the infamous "Mormon" nomenclature for the rest of the article. That MUST give GAs a headache when they see that nobody really takes them seriously.

It's kind of like they're saying, "Come on. You're Mormons. Own it..."

This is great. It just makes us look more cultish.
May the Mormon cult live on!

First, they came for tea and I said nothing
Then they came for coffee and I was silent
Then they came for mocha and I did not speak
Then expresso ice cream and I said what the heck.
-- Rabbi Penguinstock, Congregation Beth Nom
Good faith does not require evidence, but it also does not turn a blind eye to that evidence. Otherwise, it becomes misplaced faith.

At some point do they also come for the -ccino suffixed drinks? It would help if they would at least make a pretense of coming after Red Bull, Rockstar, and Monster energy drinks. Some apostate on /r/exmormon noted:
  • Science: Green tea and coffee are OK as long as you don't load them up with cream and sugar
  • Mormons: Cream and sugar are OK as long as you don't load them up with tea and coffee.

And how do you identify a Mormon? By the temperature of their caffeine.
