Church Newsroom Meltdown

Post by Mormorrisey » Tue Dec 15, 2020 4:41 pm

I haven't been around much here on NOM, just really busy and for some reason, I'm also obsessed with the American election. I can't stop watching the election meltdown for the life of me. It's just so fascinating.

On that note, apparently the church congratulated Biden on his victory yesterday. Seems innocuous, right? Well, when I read some of the comments on the newsroom Facebook feed, I was floored. Some alt-right Mormons were very, very angry. And pretty loud about it too. Is this the end for the church in Utah? Between this and Renlund telling people to wear masks?

It's just very interesting to me. When I say that women should have the priesthood, LGBTQ people should be allowed to marry in the temple, I'm called an apostate by the fundamentalist/alt-right people here. And now they are the same people calling the church to repentance now, simply because their candidate lost an election? What on earth is going on? It's pretty interesting being on the periphery of the church, and not in the US, watching this go on in real time.

In any event, if you want some entertainment, go take a look at some of those comments on the church newsroom facebook page.

Some Mormons have accepted Trump as their Messiah. This way they can have their Trump Messiah, Caesar, and Mammon all rolled into one.
Good faith does not require evidence, but it also does not turn a blind eye to that evidence. Otherwise, it becomes misplaced faith.

I should qualify this as the people who live in my area, not anybody on NOM. You people rock.

I can’t find it now either, despite seeing it earlier. It is still on the church newsroom website, but of course no social media comments to deal with there.

The Saints are going to miss Trump.

Maybe the Choir at Temple Square could sing him the So long, Farewell, Auf Wiedersehen, Goodbye song from the Sound of Music as the United States Marshals Service escorts him from the White House grounds, after he refuses to leave.

So I clicked through just for fun and was surprised and amused to find a full screen ad for Heineken beer served up on the Deseret news site. Literally filled the full screen on my iPad with the iconic green bottle and a wish for a happy holidays and to enjoy responsibility.

I will go and do the things which the lord hath commanded. :D

That's so odd, I can still see the old comments, although they are not allowing any more comments - but they haven't taken the old ones down.

Could it be that I "joined" the newsroom group and that's why I can see the old comments? I thought I might regret joining Mormon Pravda, but now I'm really glad I did! When I have some time later tonight, I'll post a few of the more juicier ones.

I'm hoping they'll sing him the "You're Fired" song from his TV show.

Okay, so there are just SO MANY gems to choose from, I'll just give a brief taste of some of the comments on the church's site. And a general comment; most are pretty short, and I've corrected some for grammar and spelling. It's really odd how QAnon people can't spell. By far the one that made me laugh most of all was the one where the commenter, in a spasm of ranting nonsense, accused the brethren of following the "stubbleness" of men. Are they growing beards now? In any event, here we go:

"This election was stolen! I go against my church on this."

"How can the church congratulate someone who believes in abortion and gay marriage?"

"My favorite part of the Book of Mormon is when Captain Moroni instructed the church to concede to Amalickiah."

"Congrats to Biden and Harris for hastening the second coming. Abortion, same sex marriage, socialism and communism - all of the devil."

"This is not about politics anymore this is the war of good and evil."

"Gadianton robbers, Biden and Harris."

"I will never pray for them. Trump should have won if all corruption was dug out."

"The church should have waited. This is disgusting how they jumped on the bandwagon so quickly."

"I'm deeply disappointed that there is no effort to stand up to the corruption. The LDS church is becoming more liberal all the time."

"I never realized the church supported abortion. God have mercy."

"I'm not happy!!! We will live under tyranny!!! Jesus is my only hope now!!!!!!!!" (I love the exclamation points. I really felt her pain that way.)

By far the best exchange I read, is where one dude says this, and it's classic: "The 'when the prophet speaks the debate is over' crowd sure seems to be singing a different tune lately." To which a woman replied, "When the prophet speaks on spiritual matters, the debate is over. But they need to keep out of politics!" And the first guy, literally quotes ol' ET Benson's 14 fundamentals in response to this person, "But, the prophet can receive revelation on any matter - temporal or spiritual - the prophet may well advise on civic matters." Mic drop, extraordinaire.

That's just a taste, for those who can't see the comments.

I have to wonder if the response would have been different if RMN had been gutsy enough to put his name on the statement. My understanding is that past congratulatory notes have been signed.

The church has a golden opportunity here.

Will they speak out against this kind of hatred and division, will they succumb to it for fear of disenfranchising a significant percent of their US membership, or will they (my guess) completely wimp out and bury their heads?

The lawyers speak for the church now, so I'm putting my bets on the latter. It's been evidenced with this pandemic, the way they parrot the government agencies and never offer anything prophetic. Seems they are learning their lessons from all the heartburn they had with gay marriage and their other social dogma vs. public opinion. Keep it neutral while trying to make it sound amazing; gaslight the bejebus out of it.

Rusty will come up with something to Rebrand within a couple weeks, and everyone will jump on the Rusty-Rebrand™ wagon, and forget that any President Newsroom announcements were made.

Right now is the opportunity for some charismatic wannabe prophet to rise up and proclaim himself The One Mighty and Strong.

I think someone already has. And it’s working.
