NOMference Sunday Morning SP 2021

This is for encouragement, ideas, and support for people going through a faith transition no matter where you hope to end up. This is also the place to laugh, cry, and love together.

More equating god with the church. Leaders seem incapable of drawing a line of distinction between the two.

Way to screw up our very first perfect positive NOMference session. -10 just for that.

Well, that confirmed my theory that old white guys screw up everything.

It is obvious that he is a manager, not a prophet. His doubt-shaming is awful.

Only *those* old white guys. My personal old white guy agrees with you that Rusty spoiled the mood.

I realize I have a negative bias toward that old pretentious dick, but I'm always hopeful I'll be able to see the humble kind prophet so many others see. I'm hopeful his messages will be positive overall, but I'm continually disappointed.

If you are watching later, watch the Korean kids singing, then Sister Aburto's talk and call it a nice Easter morning.

-10 for saying to stop rehearsing your doubts with other who have doubts. I refuse to go back to feeling like I am crazy because I am the only one who feels this way.

I was picking up a kid from the airport, so I missed this session (darn). I'll give it a try later, with the exception of Rusty. Sounds like his talk is a good time to implement my cardinal rule: I don't take advice on faith transition from someone who hasn't experienced one.

Last chance here....think I might give the afternoon session a try. From scanning through this, doesn't sound like anyone mentioned old Joe. What about tithing and temple worthiness? I mean you can't sit in church for more than an hour without mention of these topics so surely should be a highlight in conference?

I think it functions more like pre-shaming. The talk isn't directed at us. We're just collateral damage.

He's not saying these things because they're true, he's saying them because they work. Think of what that'll mean about you if you start doubting, says the little voice in believers' heads that internalizes judgments. That would mean you're lazy or sinful. And worse, everyone else would know it.

So to avoid shame, they don't. Most of them, anyway. The minority become members that Rusty doesn't give a flying f*ck about.

He could know better, but he has powerful incentives not to.

At this point, I'm more worried about my kids internalizing this controlling bullshit than anything else.

I agree. None of us are the intended audience for this. I'm not sure that the majority aren't doubting. Certainly the majority don't even attend. Most of those who attend aren't totally invested. I figure you need about a million tithe-paying members in developed countries to keep the coffers full. That's who he wants.

Good faith does not require evidence, but it also does not turn a blind eye to that evidence. Otherwise, it becomes misplaced faith.

Wong
I didn't watch one second of conference this time. While reading through the commentary, when I came across this, my first thought was Elmer Fudd saying, "Wong!/wrong." .

Can't wait to hear all the gushy comments about how great conference was, on Facebook  .
