Super Mormons

Post by Red Ryder » Thu Sep 22, 2022 3:48 pm

Sister Ryder was listening to a podcast and the woman was talking about her and her husbands struggle with fertility. She shared that her husband essentially didn’t have any viable sperm to impregnate her so they discussed using a sperm donor which was highly frowned upon by her super righteous Mormon family that claimed it was discouraged by the church.

I don’t see the moral issue here. Why would the church be against using a sperm donor? I know the handbook of instructions used to say the church discouraged the use of sperm donors by single women looking to have a child and raise as a single mother alone without the priesthood in the home.

Perhaps this is just another one of those weird Mormon urban tales that demonstrate how members choose to live to the extreme to demonstrate self righteousness.

Hmmm… maybe we need to make a list of the extreme self righteous things Mormons take upon themselves to demonstrate they are super Mormons?

1. Wear Sunday clothes all day on Sunday
2. No caffeine
3. No sperm donations.
4. Sex with garments on and only for procreation.
5. 2 hours of daily scripture study
6. No PG movies. Only G rated Disney cartoons.

What else?

It's not the sperm that's the problem, it's the method of extracting it. God cannot condone the activation of the little factory for something as selfish a couple wanting to have a family and care for a child.

The church has no problem with the way the sperm is collected if it is the husband. Any more than they have a problem with the woman undergoing the procedure to extract eggs, it is just considered the medical necessity of getting pregnant. Many couples have used artificial insemination or IVF, and in both cases the husband is told to go in the little room, here is some porn to help and here is a little jar.

But I understand that the church has a problem with sperm donors, and surrogacy both …. because the old fogies just have problems with it. Since when did church leaders need a reason to disapprove of something? It was just new and some old men questioned the morality of new ways of making babies. The church still requires adoption for surrogate births, it does nor recognize the biological parents as the parents.

I think the church’s objection is less now than it was 50 years ago, but I knew a woman in early 1970’s who went on fertility medication and used a sperm donor, and her husband divorced her because the baby wasn’t his and the church disfellowshipped her, because the baby wasn’t his. And when they use artificial insemination with a donor, they usually mix the husband’s sperm with the donor, and the husband has to give his consent, so where does he get off divorcing her because of something he consented to, and where does the church get off calling artificial insemination the same thing as adultery?

The Church prefers the natural means that Joseph used when taking care of wives whose husbands had fewer keys.
Good faith does not require evidence, but it also does not turn a blind eye to that evidence. Otherwise, it becomes misplaced faith.

8. Not drinking hot chocolate because people might think it was coffee

When I was a teenager, one of the SP members gave a whole talk about avoiding the appearance of evil, and the story he chose to share went something like this. He was at work, and it was very cold. He decided to get a hot chocolate from the vending machine, but then he was concerned all morning that someone might think he was drinking coffee so he vowed never to do it again.

I remember my mom and I looking at each other like "WTH?!?!"

Seriously, dude, enjoy your hot chocolate. No one at your job cares about you and Mormonism. i mean, how this story arose from the same religion that let JS and BY happen, is just beyond me.

That's pretty pathetic. It also kind of makes sense when you take into account the '70s church culture. I listened to Saturday's Warrior a couple of years ago out of nostalgia. Holy cow, the biggest evil in the world, apparently, was birth control. In fact, I remember E.T. Benson (I think) saying exactly that in a 1970s General Conference.

Joseph Fielding Smith said: "When a man and a woman are married and they agree, or covenant, to limit their offspring to two or three, and practice devices to accomplish this purpose, they are guilty of iniquity which eventually must be punished. Unfortunately this evil doctrine is being taught as a virtue by many people who consider themselves cultured and highly educated. It has even crept in among members of the Church and has been advocated in some of the classes within the Church."

What's really mindboggling is that attempts to have more children was also sinful. I guess any tampering with the baby-making machinery in any way was an affront to God. Fortunately for families today, the never-changing gospel is actually constantly changing and the commandments of prophets past are just cute, vague verbal meanderings with no significance.

Benson also said there's plenty of food to go around, so we should have as many children possible because God has guaranteed that no one in this country will every go hungry. What? There are people going hungry in this country? Blame the Mormons that used birth control!

I think the church was against sperm donors in the past because you couldn’t be entirely sure what race the baby would be…technology now is better at tracking the donor and their DNA.
