Boy, me too. I was physically ill and had to go to bed afterward. Of course I blamed myself for being unprepared or unworthy or something and somehow figured out a way to reframe it in retrospect as a spiritual experience rather than a nightmare. The human mind is an amazingly agile thing.

I went through the temple for the first time with DW and my in-laws, and right at the start I was just horrified when the old guy touched me between my thigh and groin with the oil. (I know they now have you clothed for this, but at that point they did not)

From there I went through the ceremony and I was already mentally done for the day, but the ceremony itself and the clothing stuff just creeped me out to no end. And then it finally ended and I get to talk again and the first thing that I hear is my MIL say "Wasn't that wonderful?"

That was the day I began my exit out even though it took me about 4-5 years to actually leave.

People will pay lots (sacrifice much) to be in an exclusive club.
