That is funny.

We do the same thing with other mythological figures all the time.

The Mesa Easter Pageant comes close to this level of pop culture photography. They do discourage having the actor portraying Jesus show up in photographs in this manner. If you are another cast member or you knew him personally then it could happen casually. But staged photographs as if you were in first century Judea are not going to happen.

That is creepy!

Not sure why but my brain flips to Brian David Mitchell when I see Jesus with kids.

Still not as creepy as Ben Carson's commissioned art work he has hanging in his bathroom.

I'm going to go counter, here. I get what everyone is saying.

I grew up with portrayals of blonde, blue-eyed Jesus's walking around being so lofty, to borrow from Mozart, he could sh*t marble.

The Savior portrayed in these portraits lives, laughs and loves. The Savior portrayed in these portraits is one I can see extending actual grace, not just the Mormon kind. These portraits encourage people to actually envision their personal view and relationship with the Savior and commit it to a portrait.

Such a warm, personal, loving relationship with the Savior that isn't mediated through a prophet, apostle or priesthood holder? Gives me a glimmer of hope.

I totally get what you're saying. in fact I'm conflicted on this.
But my biggest beef is my own projections onto this photography studio - it's just another version of look who's more righteous. It's a bunch of holier than thou Provo mormonites trying to out do each other. More InstantGram pics.

It's just all a facade - WTFLUFF is going on here?

You called? Oh, wait. Never-mind. I get it now. Yeah, I'm slow...

Someone needs to capitalize on portraits with Corporate Mormon Jesus™

And I don't know if I'm conflicted on the original subject of this post or not. Well, I guess I'm not conflicted, like others, I find it a bit creepy now. But... Back in the day when I was a believer and my kids were babies/toddlers, I think I might have thought this was cool.

It is Surfer Jesus after all. What's cooler than Surfer Jesus? It would probably cost a mint to get Utah County Surfer Jesus and his portrait photographer to a beach where they could actually photograph waves breaking in the background with my kids, but it would be cool...

At least Jesus looks a little more Middle Eastern, as he was, rather than making him look like someone less creepy to some (more white).

Forensic anthropologists suggest how a man around Jesus's time & area may have looked:

I hadn't considered that. You've got a point. I really like how their model a) looks an approaching credible Middle Eastern and b) has such an expressive face. I am not sure where I am on belief in the Savior, but when I'm there, many of these pictures depict my view of the Savior. I'm actually considering getting one of these. I can keep it in a private part of the house. :)

I checked, too. They have other types of photography, but not the Jesus and me. Perhaps the model quit.

Okay, this tangential. One of the Devil's in the older temple films used to own a dance studio. He had pictures of himself on display with all kinds of celebrities. I especially remember a picture of him with Sylvester Stallone. The name of his studio was called The Pointe

I was newly minted NOM and still thought it quietly hilarious. I think The Devil did, too.

This is the only Jesus stuff I see. I did see links elsewhere (reddit?). Maybe the guy took down the links or something. I don't see any way to access them from the main page.

I think if people want to have portraits with a Jesus impersonator, that's fine. Kinda fun, maybe. I don't know that I'd do it, but I don't see a problem with it. Maybe some do do it to feel "holier than thou" but maybe most do it because they love the idea of Jesus being with them all the time or just because they think it's a fun thing to do (make a picture like that).

Over on reddit there were some pictures. A couple getting their wedding engagement pictures with Jesus. So chic. Walking down a dirt road next to Jesus in his robe and sandals.

It looks to me as if "Lightweave" has taken down all of the photos with the Surfer-Jesus impersonator. There are plenty of copies out there floating around the DAMU, but none accessible via the "Lightweave" website that I can personally find.

It's made enough of a hubbub in SLC, that there was commentary on one of the local radio stations about it this morning. The only LDS participant in the program was asked about it, and his quote was: "Not my mormon church".
