I Am So Effing Tired Of Sympathy

I am so tired of sympathy, because at the end of the day, if the situation can be changed--and that change is reasonable and right--the sympathy and nothing more means they really don't give a f*ck and it just sucks to be you. You loser!
No, this is not the normal grievance, although it could apply. I just got off the phone with the housing administrator at my son's university.

For many reasons, we're rethinking my son living in the dorms. Turns out the contract termination penalty is $2000 and they won't let us have someone take over the contract for us. Of course, they'll just call the next person in the waiting list and tell them a space became available. The person I talked to on the phone knew it was a smarmy practice, but so sorry we can't do anything for you.
There is an appeal process, but I don't have time for that. I recently amended a past tax form. I got a return smaller than I was expecting. I looked closely at the numbers and they input my changes incorrectly. So, I have to sit on hold with them for hours and hours to get this straightened out. That example is not all that tangential. It's just example showing that I'm already tied up with stupid appeals and I simply don't have time for this type of garbage.
I understand paying a penalty of, say, a month's rent or somewhere in there, but this is the equivalent of three and it seems to me it's gauging. So, no. We're sorry Ms. Time, we know this seems unfair, but we don't do things that way (sucks to be you).

In the case of church stuff, I think the argument is valid, they just like things the way they are. That's why I say it's better to just leave, if you can.

Just curious, which university is this? (You don't have to answer...)

Thank you. Would rather not say. I do think I leaned am important lesson, though. If there is a heavy penalty for pulling out, that means there's a high probability for buyer's remorse. Find out that information before sitting through as little of the sales spiel as possible.
Dorms, investment schemes, vacation property. Whatever.
