First of all, they would probably change the focus to verse 3:
3 Given for a principle with promise, adapted to the capacity of the weak and the weakest of all saints, who are or can be called saints.
This thing was designed for the weakest of the saints, so it shouldn't be difficult for you to follow. You're not the weakest among us are you?
And if we obeyed everything in the revelation they would have to replace the sacrament water with wine.
They would have to clarify a specific temperature that defines "hot drinks", or they would have to put hot chocolate and soup back on the list.
Here's the part that describes what you CAN eat:
16 All grain is good for the food of man; as also the fruit of the vine; that which yieldeth fruit, whether in the ground or above the ground—
17 Nevertheless, wheat for man, and corn for the ox, and oats for the horse, and rye for the fowls and for swine, and for all beasts of the field, and barley for all useful animals, and for mild drinks, as also other grain.
Verse 15 is very clumsily placed and could be read as either referring to meat or non-wheat grains. All grains are good for man but wheat is specifically approved for man, as compared to the other grains, which are for animals. the exception being that barley is specifically for making beer. So, the official eventhechurchofjesuschristoflatterdaysaints diet is: fruit(specifically that grows on vines), wheat, and beer.
Oh yeah, and herbs:
10 And again, verily I say unto you, all wholesome herbs God hath ordained for the constitution, nature, and use of man—
11 Every herb in the season thereof, and every fruit in the season thereof; all these to be used with prudence and thanksgiving.
But apparently, you're supposed to take it easy on the fruits and herbs too, so just to be sure, you should limit your diet to mostly
wheat and beer. And, according to Verse 3, you would have to be weaker than the weakest of saints it that isn't adequate for you.
So the big question is, what about wheat beer? We could reduce our entire God-approved diet down to 100% Hefeweizen.
It's kind of interesting that the reason for not drinking wine and strong drink is "In consequence of evils and designs which do and will exist in the hearts of conspiring men in the last days." This seems to support the idea that Joseph was afraid of someone trying to poison him with booze (which means he drank booze), just as it was rumored may have later been done to Samuel to keep him from succeeding Joseph.
