Re: New blog post- "But My Experience Was So Good!"

This is a wonderful piece. I think of Boy Scouts. Some kids seemed to thrive in it, and for others like me, it was OK. I felt bad for the two brothers in my Explorers group whose dad insisted that they couldn’t get their drivers licence until they were Eagles. They were great kids and it all worked ...

Re: My 8 year olds faith crisis

My daughter was just baptized this past Saturday. In therapy today (she has a lot of anxiety, so we go for that) she told her therapist she has been praying to feel the spirit, and she hasn’t felt it yet. She said “god hasn’t answered any prayers.” I would arrogantly try to give her two pieces of a...

Re: Russell's Long Journey out of Mormonism

This may have been expressed before, but it occurred to me that Pres. Nelson's emphasis on the sin of saying the "Mormon Church" instead of "The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints" just gives TBM's one more thing to feel offended and persecuted by. Gnats and Camels.

Re: Dating the BOM and Zedekiah

Very smooth, nibbler. ;) 2 problems. 1. Nephi 1:4 says Lehi heard all the other prophets prophesy Jerusalem's destruction, prayed and received his vision/dream- all during the first year of Zedekiah's reign. 2. Jeremiah tells us (Jeremiah 14:13-16, 23:16-40) the other prophets, besides Jeremiah, wer...

Re: Dating the BOM and Zedekiah

Lehi left after Nebuchadnezzar’s putting Zedekiah on the throne and taking 10,000 captives back to Babylon, including bible figures like Daniel, Shadrach and those two other furnace survivors. Babylon records, which are considered reliable (they align with eclipses, etc.) tell us this was the year 5...

Re: Dating the BOM and Zedekiah

This is from the Wiki article on Zedekiah: Chronological notes The Babylonian Chronicles give 2 Adar (16 March), 597 BC, as the date that Nebuchadnezzar captured Jerusalem, thus putting an end to the reign of Jehoaichin.[10] Zedekiah's installation as king by Nebuchadnezzar can therefore be firmly d...

Re: Dating the BOM and Zedekiah

I found this in the Encyclopedia of Mormonism. EXTERNAL CHRONOLOGY. Evidence supports two possible lengths for Nephite years: 365 days and 360 days. Each can be correlated to external history. The internal chronology is consistent, so that if the exact nature of the Nephite calendar were known, only...

Dating the BOM and Zedekiah

I was checking Wikipedia about the siege of Jerusalem and found this little fact. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Siege_of_Jerusalem_(597_BC) This grabbed my attention. If the first siege of Jerusalem was 597 BC, and then Zedekiah was installed by Nebuchanezzar, then the 600 BC date for Lehi and famil...

A few months ago our grandson asked his mom, "When's my birthday?" "Feb. 15," she replied. "No way, that's the same day as last year!" he exclaimed. :D

Re: Humor to Soften Truth

Hey alas, I saw that coming. A man was praying to God. He said, "God!?" God responded, "Yes?" And the guy said, "Can I ask a question?" "Go right ahead," God said. "God, what is a million years to you?" God said, "A million years to me is only a second." "Hmmm," the man wondered. Then he asked...

Re: Disappointing Sunday School today

Another thing that added to my discomfort was the day before I received a letter (doctrinal exposition/call to repent) from my brother in law, who suggested (kindly I might add) if I was more assertive, especially about my questions, I would have more answers, a stronger testimony, and- (hint-would ...

Re: Disappointing Sunday School today

We should sweat the small stuff- sometimes. ;) One discussion leader had commented that the Mormon bible is a lot different than the Protestant bible, and I corrected him by saying the LDS use the exact same King James as everybody else, but they do include inserts of the Joseph Smith translation, a...

Re: The story changes from 1832 to 1838

A post I submitted over 2 years ago may be relevant to the this discussion of when the story changed with respect to the First Vision and the Anthon manuscript. Specifically, the dating of the 1832 First Vision account is suspect! In my analysis the Letterbook First Vision account could of been wri...

Re: Couples Married Civilly Now Authorized for Immediate Temple Marriage

My first 2 thoughts.1- Good for them. 2- What will my grand kids want to do? It will be interesting to see how things play out in Utah. I did note these instructions: "when possible leaders should encourage couples to be both married and sealed in the temple."

The story changes from 1832 to 1838

The most noted changes in Joseph's Story from his two most significant accounts (1832 and 1838) concern the first vision, but it is also noteworthy that, as Dan Vogel points out, in the 1832 account Charles Anthon could not read the characters Martin Harris showed him, and in the 1838 version Charle...

Disappointing Sunday School today

I've been regularly (3-4 times a month) attending a Presbyterian Church for the last three years, and it's been a positive experience until today. I was going to a baby blessing out of town, so I just went to Presbyterian Sunday School. Shortly before I had to leave some misinformed comments were ma...

Re: Thoughts on tithing

The problem with the Church and temple recommends is that they don’t apply the parable of the Pharisee and the publican ( Luke 18)to the process. LDS don’t understand that we are all sinners, yes even the apostles and prophets and seers.
