Re: What was King David Really Like?
Exactly. The Bible is likely full of propaganda. As is the Quran, The Book of Mormon, and all other "scripture."

Freedom of Speech is a secular concept.
Some of you know of my hobby- reading history. I'm currently reading parallel diaries of David O. McKay and Ernest Wilkinson, president of BYU during the 1960's. In 1968 Wilkinson held a Dean's meeting where the topic of campus unrest and free speech came up. Wilkinson reports in his diary that a ...

Hugh Thompson Jr.
I suspect most viewers don't know who Hugh Thompson Jr. was. He was the soldier who ended the My Lai massacre in Viet Nam. He stopped other men from following illegal orders to murder non-combatants. If you don't know the story, google My Lai massacre or Hugh Thompson Jr. It is important to ...

Re: The simplest questions
I've been reading Ernest Wilkinson's (Pres. of BYU from 1951-71, for you young folks) diarys. Why did the Church waffle back and forth from 1954 to 1962 about whether to move Ricks College (Now BYU-I) from Rexburg to Idaho Falls? Wilkinson says it's because Pres. McKay couldn't make up his ...

But, but they've got raights.
And, you know God loves them more, and gave the special magic formulas that seal forever.

What was King David Really Like?
There is a series on TV about King David that I haven't watched yet, but I'm thinking about David and thinking he was probably really a shyster, especially if he really murdered Uriah and stole Bathsheba. My hypothesis is this: for propaganda reasons and because he was viewed as composing the early ...

Re: Offering a trade to apologists
I'm not an apologist, and I do see those two examples as comparable. I am convinced a lot of our differences are motivated by something other than the facts or data. Some things that we all are affected by: Bias and Pride, for example. Facts alone will not convince an opponent. Facts coupled with ...

What's going on with Marjorie Taylor-Greene?
I just watched an interview with Marjorie Taylor-Greene where she apologized for her past behavior: MTG: ...I think that's fair criticism and I would like to apologize for taking part in the toxic politics, it's very bad for our country, it's been something I've thought a lot about and I'm committed ...

Re: Another Holy Ghost?
I watched a short excerpt from "The Family Guy" the other day where they talked about the Ghost that never lies -- and I thought of it as a kind of a new name for the Holy Ghost. It was an irreverent bit where the setting is a courtroom, and "The Ghost That Never Lies" was put on the stand, but only ...

Sad news. He was one of a kind.
I wish I could attend his memorial. I feel like my NOM friends are family.

Re: Keeping up with Trump
It would be sad to be Donald Trump. He hates a lot of people. Imagine thinking that some people admire you for your ability to hate others, to promote hate. Imagine thinking that Christians(!!!)admire you because you promote hate.

Trying to find a Dallin Oaks quote
My memory, which is sometimes reliable tells me that Dallin Oaks once spoke about the Middle Ages as a time when men relied on faith and that since the Renaissance and the Enlightenment society has been going downhill. Does anyone else recall this, and know where it might be found?

Founding Fathers
I see posts online of people talking about how God 'called' the Founding Fathers to set up the USA. I occasionally reply: "Do you realize that men that you believe were called by God, namely Franklin, Washington, Jefferson, Madison and many others were deists. Ask yourself, why did God call deists ...

What are the odds?
I have had success discussing my critical views of the LDS church using this perspective- I could be wrong. I explain that I honestly believe that there is a possibility that the Church could be true. Yes, I honestly believe, with my understanding of the limitations of the human mind that that is a ...

Living in a Bi-Polar society
Growing up in Rexburg, I was indoctrinated into a essentially mono-cultural society- 95% LDS. On my mission I was exposed to a poly-cultural society in southern California. The current society in the USA seems to be largely bi-cultural, and even worse, the extremes of each culture are getting the ...

Re: Q12 leading the church
Interesting. Those three bodies (FP, Q12, Q70) should each get one vote. No, the RS presidency and primary and YW presidency all need one vote also. That way, women have equal say to all the men in the church. And if there are any disagreements, then that group’s vote is just canceled. Because I am ...
