Re: Suicide

  Every LDS topical guide in the scriptures I've ever seen had the entry, "Suicide: see murder." McConkie's Mormon Doctrine , at least the 1959 version said the same thing. It's been an issue with me ever since my 1987 suicide attempt. I learned not to look to the Topical Guide for comfo...

Re: Inability to trust and feeling nostalgic

I like that I trust myself more now than when I was "in" the Church and thought I was the only one without a testimony. As far as trusting others, I think I have a better understanding of when to trust people now that I'm "out." Now I trust people most of the time, until they say, "I know the church...

Re: Is anyone talking about the new proclamation?

I haven't heard of it. It is because I'm out of touch? So... is the new proclamation about Joseph Smith (the other anointed one) being true? He it is that we are not evil of to speak ? Restoration Proclamation There's also videos of Rebrand Rusty™ reading it if if you'd like to bore yourself that w...

Mountain Meadows, 163 years later.

Today Utah has its own special 9/11 commemoration. The massacre part of the Mountain Meadows Massacre happened 163 years ago today. A month ago our family had a reunion in Cedar City, and I was tempted to suggest a visit to the massacre site, but decided against it. I'm the only sibling or spouse wh...

Re: New biblical scholarship overview on Adam and Eve with Mormonism - looking for feedback

This is very well done. It was interesting to read that Joseph saw Adam.... and Michael in the same vision on Jan. 21, 1835. :o Fortunately my current D&C has edited out that unpleasant contradiction. I was fascinated to learn about Sidney Rigdon declaring Adam as the "Ancient of Days" before Joseph...

Re: Utah Life in 1965

I remember attending that Oct. conference. Our family went on a road trip that took us from Rexburg, ID to SLC to Bryce and Zion canyons, to the Grand Canyon, to LA(Disneyland). The Watts riots had happened earlier that summer and I was vaguely aware of them. It was during "potato harvest vacation" ...

Re: Working on some biblical scholarship overviews and did a Tower of Babel one - looking for feedback

This is an excellent and timely post. I'm not a scholar but as I read it these two paragraphs seemed to need some material between them to connect them or distinguish them: While Genesis was long believed to have been written by Moses himself during his lifetime, estimated to be 1391-1271 BCE, most ...

Re: Usefulness of Prophets, Seers, and Revelators

With hindsight it is easy to say that the Church should have gone from Ohio straight to SLC. They would have avoided the trouble with persecution in Missouri and Illinois. Of course a counter argument would be that the Saints learned from their afflictions. One item on my shelf was realizing the pro...

Re: If I could ask them one question . . . Come Follow Me, Lesson 33

Thanks to A-BOM for another great post. Literal Bible/LDS chronology was probably the first big item on my shelf. For a while I made it work by telling myself, "well, maybe the flood was 2250 B.C. or maybe it was 3,000 B.C. or even earlier. :o   But then I realized the BOM chronology pla...

Re: Suit worship driving me crazy

The #1 purpose of the Church is to get you to do anything and everything the brethren tell you to do. Brigham once said something like, "I am fearful they (the LDS) settle down in a state of blind self security. (in their leaders) I don't think I've heard any general authority say anything like that...

Talking about the mote and the beam.

I imagined a satirical example, Boyd Packer: "Some parts of history are not faith promoting and should be erased."

It looks like concrete was a bad choice for the time capsule. A lot of the material was greatly damaged. Too bad. :?

Re: How essential is a literal Adam and Eve story to Mormonism?

Elder Holland: (April 2015) "In our increasingly secular society, it is as uncommon as it is unfashionable to speak of Adam and Eve or the Garden of Eden or of a “fortunate fall” into mortality. Nevertheless, the simple truth is that we cannot fully comprehend the Atonement and Resurrection of Chris...

Re: If I could ask them one question . . . Come Follow Me, Lesson 30

This is brilliant. I would say there is more wisdom in this thread than in the entire book Miracle of Forgiveness and all the conference talks about "little factories" and so forth. Annotated and Alas really came through. :D If there is any doubt about the harm Church leaders have done promoting the...

I'm reminded of an old saying that may not even apply here: "Good people will do good things and bad people will do evil things. But religion can make good people do evil things and/or bad people do good things."

Re: How essential is a literal Adam and Eve story to Mormonism?

Most of my life I doubted a literal Adam and Eve, yet I hung on to Mormonism. Thus, when my shelf broke it was a relief rather than traumatic. I would be curious how many BYU profs. believe in a literal Adam and Eve. I would guess less than 50%.
