Re: The Q-15 has a safety net. How would it work in a crisis?

I’ve long suspected an apostolic oath. Dallin Oaks refers to it in an interview. It is probably TOP secret. How could we learn more about it? Is it in a Hugh Brown biography?

Re: *The Dreaded Asterisk*

When looked at from that angle, it's just insane. And cruel. They are helping the evil and hurting the innocent, including your friend. But most all-in TBMs are incapable of seeing it. They think their god agrees that this is the way, so anything that disagrees is clearly wrong. For 99.9% of intent...

Re: Covenant Confusion: Abraham, dead animals and land grabs

In the O.T. Abraham makes no covenant with God. God makes a covenant with him, because Abraham has been and will continue to be obedient...to the degree that being human allows him. It also says that God "swore the oath by Himself because He could swear by no one greater." But in the N.T. the Savio...

Re: God loves the apostate?

I think this is connected to the God is a Man, or God is a individual spirit ideas. If God is Love, or if God is Wisdom, of course she loves the apostate. ;)

The Q-15 has a safety net. How would it work in a crisis?

As I understand it, the Q-15 has a "safety net, in addition to the "God would take/destroy a disobedient prophet" idea that has been often referred to.One man, even the 'prophet' couldn't lead the Church astray because to do anything radical, he (always a he :? ) would have to get the other 14 guys ...

Re: Where was the City of Enoch?

From Wilford Woodruff's Journal: "Joseph also said that when the City of Enoch fled and was translated, it was where the gulf of Mexico now is; it left that gulf a body of water." I can't find it, but I remember reading an excerpt from the journal of an early saint who said Joseph Smith pointed to ...

Re: Covenant Confusion: Abraham, dead animals and land grabs

I'm reminded of an Ezra Taft Benson talk at BYU, "Fourteen Fundamentals of following the Prophet" where he says: 5. The prophet is not required to have any particular earthly training or credentials to speak on any subject or act on any matter at any time. Taken to its (il)logical conclusion...

Re: Prophet, seer, and revelator are titles in the church, not descriptions of what someone does

I think every idea in your post is valid. I am curious, if I ask my TBM wife this question, what will she say? If a opportune moment comes up, I'll ask her, and return and report. :D

"Noteworthy" loses director to new policy.

https://byumusicgroup.byu.edu/noteworthy/

Unfortunately, the official site of "Noteworthy" while announcing a new director offers no thanks for the services of past director Scott Shattuck. Apparently, Shattuck chose to let his temple recommend lapse, and says he has no plans to renew it.

Re: What did Jesus have to say about...

Me too. I see Jesus as one who whether God, man, or both, chose to live among the poor and give his best to them. Whether he claimed the messiahship for himself, or had that foisted upon him by his followers, he doesn't seem to have intentionally exploited the poor. He didn't say, "Give your money t...

Re: Joseph Smith and the curse of the flaming sword

Considering some of the crazy dreams I have had, I think think it's entirely possible that Joseph DREAMED about an angel with a drawn sword. Add to this the explanations, particularly in 1st Nephi, that dreams and visions are the same thing, and we have a case for a 'pious fraud' Joseph telling this...

Re: What did Jesus have to say about...

Jesus reportedly said some wise things in the New Testament. He also said some things that surely were metaphorical: "cut off your hand, blind your offending eye, etc. It has been noted in history that, sadly, some people took these metaphors literally and and did bodily harm to themselves. If we ta...

Nibbler's post reminded me of this:
The Mormon God also tells us in D&C 19 that he uses deceptive hyperbole to scare people into obedience. :o
That's pretty narcissistic.

I really have to watch Animal House sometime.
I'm also wondering why God and Jesus are not depicted as wearing green aprons on the temple, or are they now?

Re: Describing the "Mormon" God.

The ideal of God is that he/she is the same, unchangeable. This is ideal because a God who is changeable cannot be trusted to be the same tomorrow, or two million years hence. But Joseph Smith's god is an evolved being, although it might be argued there has always been a "god." I think Orson Pratt h...

Describing the "Mormon" God.

One of the disadvantages of growing up Mormon was being taught about a particular God. This God appears or reveals himself to a very few special people called prophets, but restricts his interaction with 99.999999999% of his children. Of these other children it seems about 1/4 to 3/4 get special fee...

Thanks for the well written summary of the book, Hagoth. It looks like it's worth exploring. It's been a while since I read Zealot and it seems like it was historic fiction. Am I remembering it right?

Elder Kevin Pearson

I listened to excerpts of Area Authority Kevin Pearson's Rising Generation speech a few days ago.. The idea of "don't pray if you should go on a mission" disturbed me, so I listened to the entire talk. There were other disturbing thoughts in the talk as well. I noticed the talk has been taken off th...
