Elder Kevin Pearson

I listened to excerpts of Area Authority Kevin Pearson's Rising Generation speech a few days ago.. The idea of "don't pray if you should go on a mission" disturbed me, so I listened to the entire talk. There were other disturbing thoughts in the talk as well. I noticed the talk has been taken off th...

Re: The Church's Statement on the AP Arizona Abuse Story

Thanks so much for the posts on this. I probably will never be able to understand the pain that has been caused in these tragic situations, but shedding light on the process is good for everybody. I reminded of John Taylor lying about polygamy in France in 1851. He needed to be made responsible for ...

Re: Did Robert Kirby retire?

Good point, Hagoth. I feel that Joseph Smith was trying to set up, for whatever reason, a system where people would follow him no matter what he did. Church Leaders are still promoting that. Isn't the whole point of the "Sacrifice of Isaac" story?

In reviewing Fowler's Stages of Faith I picked this version because the simpler language made it easier for me to understand. Coming to this late, but putting my two bits worth: LOTR is in my top five, and Stranger in a Strange Land is in my top 10. Ayn Rand affected me when I first read her stuff. Ray Bradbury, Isaac Asimov, and Arthur Clarke are all favorites. I haven't been able to get into Harry Potter or Hunger Games ...

"Type of Faith" suggests qualitative not quantitative to me.
I agree tht I had blind faith in Covid shots.
The online sources I found said polio vaccine ranged fom 90% to 99% effective.

WTF, You're experience with cancer is a lot like mine. Cancer is real, but the subject is very complex, with multiple causes, cures, and continuing research. Fifty years ago I knew people who said smoking didn't cause cancer because they had smoked all their life and they were still alive. Their exp...

Re: Types of Faith Spectrum

I am curious to know why we noms experienced a faith crisis but why some of our spouses or family have not. Is it because our faith is based on evidence? Mine started with the Blacks and the priesthood essay. It just didn't make sense to me that the former prophets would be wrong on this unless the...

Faith- confidence in a thing that one hasn't directly experienced. How does evidence play into this definition? I don't have any personal "experience" with cancer. I believe firmly that it is real. In fact, I would say that I know it is real. I like the question. My definition is different than Pau...

Re: Types of Faith Spectrum

Has anyone met a TBM with TYPE of faith that would be described as honest? I can't think of any; not even Jim Bennett would qualify. I think the vast majority of true believers would tell you that their faith is completely honest, and I believe them. They honestly believe the things they've been ta...

Re: Joseph Smith and the curse of the flaming sword

They faced each other down on the streets of Kirkland. The Angel had a determined look, but Joseph's eyes were brimming over with both fidelity for Emma and a burning itch best not to describe in polite company. The Angel spoke first, "It's your choice, Joseph". Joseph squinted and replied, "Draw, ...

Re: Priesthood is just...

You are 100% correct and I regret to inform you I will be stealing this idea for future references to the priesthood. What a simple, easy to understand way to frame what priesthood power actually is. This is true, but a complete description might involve a description of the hierarchical nature of ...

Types of Faith Spectrum

As I was driving home from Bear Lake I was thinking about what a "Types of Faith" spectrum might look like. At one end would be blind faith. Next could be biased faith. Balanced faith could come next. The opposite of blind faith would be honest faith. TYPE OF FAITH SPECTRUM Blind Faith---- Biased Fa...

What's worse than the LDS Church? Lots of things.

I found an interesting book about the "Pimp 'n Ho'" culture "Raised in Pimp City" and it is really a downer. Clarence Thomas, Proud Boys, the LDS Church, etc. don't hold a candle to how people are manipulated, extorted, exploited, etc. in this culture. Women are nothing but objects, and pimps are gl...

Re: Comparing the Historicity of Ramses II and Moses.

One thing evangelical Christians cite as evidence or proof of the Old Testament/Torah is its "miraculous" preservation over the millennia. What about the amazing preservation of the tests on the mortuary temple of Ramses III at Karnak? (1184-1153 BCE) It seems that when we critically examine the O.T...

Comparing the Historicity of Ramses II and Moses.

I wonder if TBM's are aware that we have contemporary records of Ramses II but not Moses. Heck, we have Ramses II's mummy. The physical evidence of Moses doesn't appear until the Dead Sea Scrolls, 1000 or more years after he supposedly lived. The significance physical ancient records of the Egyptian...
