Re: Snufferism is better

Organized Religion could be compared to fire: It is a powerful and yet destructive force. Humankind has harnessed fire quite well. I don't think it has done as well with organized religion. Not yet, anyway.

HOW did Joseph Smith write the BOM?

I think this is STILL a good question; and I think it deserves better answers from both sides (believer or skeptic) of the question. What I hope to find is new insights into the process. Did Joseph have a photographic memory or an unusual imagination? Did he hear stories from other people? How did l...

Re: Seven Months Down. 53 To Go.

In an effort to try and understand what we could possibly do to heal the division and help members feel supported the EQ sent out a survey. Ward members were asked to rate for themselves how comfortable they felt at church, how well the lessons were going for them, how effective the activities were...

Let the buyer beware...

"Caveat Emptor" is a Latin expression that means the buyer assumes responsibility for deciding if the the product is what it is represented to be. Should we apply this to religion as well? Should we tell disaffected Mormons: "It is/was your responsibility to determine if the Church is true? Or does ...

Re: Long Island Medium & Joseph Smith

When Josiah Stowell went from Pennsylvania to Palmyra/Manchester to get Joseph Jr. to help find a Spanish treasure mine, there is an account that sounds like Joseph was looking in the seer stone and describing Josiah's farm which Joseph Jr. had never seen. I can't find it yet but this one from the 1...

Long Island Medium & Joseph Smith

I see similarities between how Joseph Smith and Teresa Caputo (Long Island Medium) operate. Check it out and see if you agree.

What great stories Stealth and Alas. That's about the time my shelf broke and I thought I was the only NOM/Post Mormon in SLC. I didn't find NOM for another year or two. I'm so glad I did. I learned so much from Stealth, Alas, and all the others on NOM 1.0.

Re: Families Floating in Hereafter

Joseph did say this about sealings. March 11, 1844: "Joseph /W.W. Journal: Again the doctrine or sealing power of Elijah is as follows: if you have power to seal on earth & in heaven then we should be crafty. (changed to wise in HC:6, p. 253) The first thing you do go & seal on earth your sons & you...

Re: DHO's Attempted Gaslighting of Electroshock Therapy On Gay Individuals At BYU

Lately I've been doing a fairly deep dive into Mountain Meadows Massacre and I'm amazed that John D. Lee was able to say (in His book written 18 years later) that he opposed the Massacre every step of the way until he was forced into it by the consensus of his Mormon associates, and THEN he particip...

Re: Debate night live thread!!!!!!

To the idea of having to replace one faith with another: Let's look at that from a different angle. Cars. Make it much easier. If you're walking along and you see someone drive into the parking lot with a flat tire that they haven't noticed, you tell them they have a flat tire. Only an idiot would ...

Re: Families Floating in Hereafter

I find this quote interesting: Joseph used to say that he would have her (Emma Smith) hereafter, IF HE HAD TO GO TO HELL FOR HER, AND HE WILL HAVE TO GO TO HELL FOR HER AS SURE AS HE EVER GETS HER." Brigham Young. (Journal of Discourses, Volume 17, page 159) Maybe if you are a prophet God gives you ...

Re: Consistent Logic Not Required

Adding on a few thoughts: The Church Essay on the Priesthood ban allows some people enough space to logically conclude that the ban was 1. To keep Black people from getting the priesthood until it was the "right time." I think this is close to what Dallin Oaks believes. 2. the (White) Church as a wh...

Yup. When you come to the fork in the road and you feel going right is correct- and later learn it was- It was the Holy Ghost telling you which way to go. You come to the fork in the road and you feel going left was is correct- and it's not- You must have faith to create a scenario that sustains you...

Re: “The Book of Mormon is not a book of history. The Book of Mormon is a book about the future.”

One hundred years from now Elder Quentin Q. Holland will cite Bednar's talk and say, "See, even back then some believed it might not be historical. :o Two hundred years from now Elder Dallin V. Eyring will say, "We never have taught the absolute historicity of the Book of Mormon." Or it migh...
