Re: Your brain on Mormonism

As an amateur historian with a special interest in LDS history, I realize that I got the whitewashed history for 40 years.(Although I got snippets of unbiased history from time to time.) Now that I'm retired, reading and writing about history is one of my big pursuits. I think studying authentic, un...

Re: Spiritual* Violence

Spiritual abuse is sometimes called religious abuse. It happens when someone uses spiritual or religious beliefs to hurt, scare or control you. Spiritual abuse can be a form of domestic and family violence. From 1-800-Respect
This makes sense.

Re: Angeles and Plates

I agree. Joseph as a prophet who intentionally and repeatedly lies, manipulates followers, pulls polygamy and Zion in Independence, and the Book of Abraham out of his— uh, out his hat and is SO arrogant that he could say “nobody (not even Jesus?!) held a Church together— that is the thing I can’t ma...

Re: Solution to "labor shortage"

Yeah, this is a big part of the problem. Makes me wonder what drove the high and low spikes between 2000 and 2010. Is it due to anything the government did? Is the spike in profits due to unions losing power? I know some people need help. Now instead of tithing I give to homeless shelters. And I gen...

Re: Anyone else feel trapped?

Not only are we trapped in Mormonism because of our spouse, we have bits and pieces inside of us that are next to impossible to get out. For example, the other day, I opened a new bottle of wine for cooking. I am still learning what kinds go good with what food, and how to get the flavor just right...

This sounds nit picky, but wouldn’t consciousness after death be a better/more accurate term. Personally I’m of 2 minds about consciousness after death. 😉

Re: The Bible Vs. Joseph Smith

I agree. If Joseph were alive today it seems he would still be a Bible literalist. Otherwise how can many BOM texts like: Jaredites, Adam was..., flood references..., etc. be explained? Where the BOM equates Korihor and other deists/agnostics with the devil, that seems like Joseph Smith speaking. If...

Re: What do you believe about it now?

I'm curious- Who decided to put the Brigham Young statue on the corner of State and Main? I'm betting it wasn't Brigham. Not to put down Pres. Nelson. Church prophets have a tradition of memorializing themselves.

Re: More than one way to Marry

I'll add another thing. When I was a teenager my parents were going through a rough patch. My Dad had run farm land owned by his father in law (my Grandpa) for 25 years. Dad even thought they had an understanding that he would buy or inherit it. Then my Grandpa decided to change the arrangement. Thi...

As sung by Frank Sinatra- Love and marriage, love and marriage, Go together like a horse and carriage. This I tell ya, brother, you can't have one without the other. Love and marriage, love and marriage, It's an institute you can't disparage. Ask the local gentry and they will say it's elementary. T...

Re: 'Do you think I could ever be happy outside of the church?'

Jfro your wife needs to know about the old Boy Scout tree limb trick. It's sold to the tenderfoot as a test of bravery and obedience. The older scouts take a tenderfoot and lay him on a board tightly blindfolded. Then they take him to a tree that has a low lying limb about 5-6 feet off the ground. ...

My barely relevant Givens/Fluhman story --- I attended one of those private firesides in the Bay Area back in 2014-2015 where the Givens spoke with Spencer Fluhman, the current Exec Director of the Maxwell Institute. Most of Fiona's talk was about finding Mother in Heaven in literature and the scri...

Re: Extended Family Baptism

And when was the last time God killed people for being bad? It's not even applicable! Come on sister, you are better than this! Hmmm.... Joseph Dodged a bullet (actually a flaming sword) when he agreed to polygamy. Emma had to accept polygamy, if only for a little while, so she got to live another ...

Missouri Trial of Joseph Smith and others, Nov. 12, 1838

Here is a site that has the records of Joseph Smith's trial in Missouri Nov. 12, 1838. Included is testimony by W.W.Phelps, Thomas Marsh, Sampson Avard, John Corrill, and others concerning the Mormon War of 1838. The testimony includes pretty reliable confirmation that the Mormons burned homes and s...

The 3 Witnesses statements might be hearsay evidence as I understand it, since they originate out of court and not subject to cross examination. Hearsay Defined Hearsay is defined as an out of court statement, made in court, to prove the truth of the matter asserted. These out-of-court statements do...

Re: What do you believe about it now?

I think there is about a 1-3% chance the Church is true. Even if it is true, the leaders prioritize the Church over Truth- hence they are essentially worshipping the Church to some extent, not God. So I don't trust them as a great source of Truth, but I may be biased. I think there is a 50-50% chanc...

Re: Fiona Givens and BYU

I have a feeling she could talk all she wants about Heavenly Mother, but if she is being pounced on I suspect it has more to do with inadequate leader worship. But who knows? Inadequate leader worship at BYU or among the Brethern? I am also guessing there is fear that Heavenly Mother talk will loos...
