Re: The Great Apostasy didn’t really happen according to new Maxwell Institute book.
I would not be surprised if GA-15 guy went down and, like McConkie in days of yore, set the record straight. But I could be wrong.

Re: Why Do I Still Feel the Spirit? (when I don't really believe)
I think a very simple way to look at it is that the human brain and body are perfectly capable of producing the feeling we call "the spirit" without the need to attribute it to invisible beings. There might be invisible beings contributing to these feelings, but we have absolutely no way of detecti...

Re: Mormons are able to gaslight themselves
When Boyd Packer said "A testimony is found in the bearing of it" he might as well have said 'members, go gaslight yourselves."

Re: Mormonism unchecked
Good point, Blazerb. BYU is a great example of a little mini-state governed by the Church. Leaders and teachers would be encouraged to report "rebels." Everyone would be constantly reminded how much the Church does for them, and there would lots of little pharisaical rules; maybe a little like a hom...

Re: Noah and the Flood
Noah and the ark was my first real broken shelf. Mid 40’s and I finally allowed myself to analyze this story and agree that there was no way all of the animals on earth could fit in that boat. I allowed myself to believe this must be a symbolic story…then I moved on to Adam and Eve…. I think for ma...

Re: Why Do I Still Feel the Spirit? (when I don't really believe)
I always feel the spirit strongest in nature or while listening to music. F&T meetings not so much. I recently visited my daughter in Virginia and as she sang a lullaby to her little girl I broke into tears, and was quite emotional for some time. My granddaughter asked her Mom, "Why is Grandpa cryin...

I could list other examples of a type of "common law" that might have been practiced in Utah. I would love to read more examples. Check out: "Utah Historical Quarterly," Fall 1983: Mountain Common Law. Incidentally, having an apostle for a defense attorney was a distinct advantage in frontier Utah....

Noah and the Flood
Frankly, the basis of my disbelief in many LDS teachings is based on the irrationality of the official LDS stance on certain fundamental teachings. See this example from lds.org below: Flood at Noah’s Time See also Ark; Noah, Bible Patriarch; Rainbow. During Noah’s time the earth was completely cove...

Re: Consciousness
Those (NOM's) who don't know, but know that they don't know don't worry me. Those that don't know that they don't know scare me. In other words, there are those: mystics, religionists, etc. who think they know what is true but they don't. They will try to swallow a camel (Jesus's words) to prove wha...

Re: Mormonism unchecked
Mormonism/Utah Territory unchecked would have been governed by the Church. The government would have been by church leaders and the courts would have been by church members. What would that have been like? I refer to an excerpt from the 1851 trial of Howard Eagan for murdering the seducer of his wi...

Re: Thoughts on priesthood blessings and feeling the spirit meaning the church is true
One of the most powerful spiritual experiences of my life told me to marry my now ex-wife. It's obvious how that turned out. Sometimes those hormone rushes lead to good things, and sometimes they lead to bad things. I think they tend to lead to good more often just because almost any decision usual...

Re: The Great Apostasy didn’t really happen according to new Maxwell Institute book.
I was given a very negative view of the Catholic Church in my Seminary classes in the 1970's. We were reminded that the Catholic church fit the description of the Church of the Devil in 1st Nephi, and that the Catholic Church was responsible for indulgences and various inquisitions. This is a big sw...

I'm a Mormon campaign.
I came across an old "I'm a Mormon ad on youtube. Some observations: Typically the sidebar of youtube features a variety of topics. When I brought up a I'm a Mormon video the side bar was almost 100% LDS subject matter. The new campaign, "Come Unto Christ" has views from the thousands to the tens of...

Re: Hypocrisy
Even though the above article comes down on the "stay faithful" side of the argument, it also makes clear there is no place for condemnation or judging of the individual who takes a different path than that sought for by the church. If anything those who "judge" should be saying, "I don't blame you...

Where would they draw the 4 point line? Half Court?
Incidentally, my Grandpa playing for the 1906 Ricks Academy team, a little over a decade after the game was invented. Some times the team had single digit point totals. An typical score: 12-8.
