Re: Heretic Movie

I just thought of a LDS Missionary film I wasn't sure about Other Side of Heaven...but I looked it up and it was distributed by Excel Entertainment Group which is a subsidiary of Deseret Book. So that ones out. Im curious if anyone can name any others without LDS ties. One documentary that was ...

Re: What is the most harmful lie the Church has perpetrated?

If you are asking about harmfulness, I would say: "We are the gold standard for protecting children." It is getting to the point that there are more lawsuits against Mormon church leaders for child and/or sex abuse than the Roman Catholic church which has over 70 times as many members. This belief ...

Re: Heretic Movie

It is interesting how TMBs react to Mormonism in the Cinema and how that has evolved. When The Singles Ward came out, it was generally loved by TBMs because it had an overall positive message about Mormonism and the fact that a movie about Mormons got wide release. I recall God's Army also was ...

I can only think of one teaching that is hasn't changed and that is it worship the leadership.

Other than that, Basically every Mormon teaching has changed at some point or other.

Re: Heretic Movie

I have seen one Mormon reviewer claim it is full of anti-Mormon and anti-Christen materiel and had a predictable negative rating. I was tempted to ask exactly what parts of the movie were not accurate about Mormon theology and if he could cite any sources for it, but I don't know if I have the brain ...

When my FIL was bishop, he was repeatedly suggested to shave his mustache, but he always refused. That was his old hippie self protesting "the Man" in his modern way. Still has it even today.

Re: Evangelicals

I know of evangelical churches that people in DW's family go to that are very much the stereotypical evangelical. There are anti-abortion sermons, anti-intellectual* sermons, Pro "tradtional USA" stuff etc. They even get into the evangelical ultra conservative women's clothing stuff. Then I know ...

Re: BoM "in a different realm"

The main presenter mentioned that, unlike most people, he doesn't need any evidence for the Book of Mormon, and he's fine with the notion that it happened in "a different realm." I find this very interesting because I have been predicting that people would start to promote the idea that the BoM is ...

Re: Did I get excommunicated?

I'm still here!! Thanks for getting things up and running again! It felt weird not doing NOMference. But Oaks will probably in charge in April, so we'll have to do something special for that sh!tshow!!! I missed NOMference too. It's nice to commiserate here. Although this session there was not much ...

Arnold on Hate

Not directly Mormon related, but Arnold Schwarzenegger has a very powerful message about the dangers of hateful thinking. Some good food for thought.

Radio Free Mormon has covered several of RMN's fish stories that fall apart when you look into them. It looks like accurate memory isn't one if RMN's gifts.

I also wanted to note that by limiting honorable excuses to not serve to poor health or disability, that implies that all other reasons for not serving are dishonorable. While LDSinc. may say that health and disability are honorable reasons to not go, reality is a different matter. I know several ...

Re: What happened to Church Sports?

This is pure speculation on my part, but my guess is liability costs got too high.

Even if it is all volunteer players and staff, the events still happen on church property, so they have potential to be liable for injuries, and what I remember, injuries were not unknown in church ball.

Maybe this is a underhanded gift to state lawyers. The 1st amendment people are going to have a field day with this. So the question is how long before the gets thrown out. They have tried this in the past with various government spaces and it always gets thrown out. Of course, the sad part is the ...

D&D is a thing? Funny that I never heard anything about it being of Satan!!! Is it a Utah thing? D&D was a big target for the Satanic Panic back in the 1980's. This was a nationwide hysteria, not just Utah. LOT of people thought that D&D was somehow summoning demons or some other BS. There are ...

The BBC had an article yesterday where they found that despite the massive hype around AI, it's not nearly are preventive as people think. Only about 2% people use it on a daily basis.
