Re: Sunday Logistics

I wonder if life in ferociously strict LDS families has become even more hellish due to the new Sunday home study time. I suppose time will tell. Some years from now the children of such families will talk about it. It somewhat has in our house. DW is pretty adamant about nightly scripture study. O...

My ward came up with having a Book of Mormon study group that meets for an hour on Sunday. That way church can be 3 hours for the people that really, really need it to be 3 hours.
 I just can't... fathom. Why can't we all just go home and rejoice that we're NOT at church?

Re: Sunday Logistics

I honestly believe some people's mindset is that everyone needs to be more strict in their observances and more focused on everything having a gospel purpose (focus on church business at the expense of building a community), otherwise people will be too weak spiritually and end up falling away. The...

Re: I love my wife

Congratulations man! Its good to see examples of mixed-faith marriages working well. I feel like my TBM DW is still reeling from a conversation we had weeks ago with other TBM friends where one of them mentioned they couldn't think of a single mixed-faith marriage that hadn't ended in divorce. I imm...

LdsLiving is a joke. I find it amusing when it isn’t annoying.
This. I mostly hate that website because DW latches onto every faith-promoting half-truth spewed forth onto those pages.

Have you had something like this happen to you?
I feel like I have had experiences like this, that weren't necessarily tied to mormonism. But it has been a looooong time, and I miss them.

Lately I've had the urge to take up meditation. This makes me feel like I really should give that a shot.

Re: Missionaries can call home weekly now

Wait - is there a scandal about to break that involves missionaries not being able to call home? Yet another "we did this messed up stuff for years but it's OK we don't do that anymore" revelation. Is it a good thing that they no longer isolate young people from their families while they are ...

Re: Mr. and Mrs. Græy's Stuff

We had trouble having kids... it took us over 3 years after we started trying to have a kid and we had a miscarriage about 2.5 years into that. I never really understood how much B/C on RR's list ate away at her, and I wish she had told me at the time because I could've been there for her a lot mor...

Re: Trying to balance beliefs and kids and all of the church stuff that comes with it... the jfro update

Yeah I kind of hate it too -- my wife is hard to shop for and with being Mormon you can't do some of the 'cliche' V-day gifts so it's usually flowers, chocolate, and something random. :) My V-day card today pretty much sums up the awkwardness well: "Happy Valentine's Day, Jfro! I love you for all t...

I want to sign this. But I can't shake the feeling of someone from TSCMC going through the list and finding the "active" members. I'm a nobody, and yet, I still feel... targeted.

Re: Sunday Logistics

Is primary combined sharing time, or is it individual classes for each age group? Most wards in our neck of the woods have followed direction to combine Jr and Sr primaries for 20 minute singing time, and then splitting up for ~20 minutes of individual class time. At least one ward has found that "...

Re: Apocalypse vitamins and the return of FARMS

Don't get me wrong, I love those quotes. But if JS or BY had to contend with the Internet I am very skeptical that they would have uttered them. I agree. The problem is, that was the type of mormonism that many of us connected with and developed a testimony of. Now we can see that type of mormonism...

Re: Apocalypse vitamins and the return of FARMS

Those statements are all fine and good unless they distract from holding up the church and its leaders. That kind of talk was functional and fortified many believing Mormons that they were on the side of the altruistic truth seeker in the pre-Internet days. But information is just too easy to come ...

Re: Apocalypse vitamins and the return of FARMS

I just finished listening this morning. Like RubinHighlander, I listened to it via the Mormon Discussion podcast and have inherited that bias. That said, I really think Bill's interpretation is spot on. The church can't let scholarship of the truth claims speak for itself. Through that lens it fall ...

Re: Abducted in Plain Sight

According to B's obit, he remarried in the 90's (temple) and was an ordinance worker for 7 years. So there is more punishment church for the dad than there was for a serial child molester and kidnapper. Do you have a link to this? I tried searching but every obit I could find only listed family who...

Re: The gospel for dummies

Several people commented and shared stores about how we shouldn't judge others for their personal interpretation of the WoW. Eventually someone brought up the BYUx honor codes and the whole class devolved ragging on the BYUs for being too rigid and controlling. A few people had stories about being ...

Re: Nelson visit

I could go into more detail if anyone has questions, but it was largely forgettable. I await what the faithful will take away from the experience. My wife admitted that she probably would not do this kind of event again because of the traffic, crowds, and all of the waiting around. This seems to ha...

Re: Mr. and Mrs. Græy's Stuff

It's programming... and every time I try to tell her that you can still be a great person w/o the church she immediately turns that into me bashing her family or her ancestors. It's a defense mechanism but it apparently is not unique w/ church stuff. Sorry you're going through it - if I ever find a...

Re: Mr. and Mrs. Græy's Stuff

Sorry, this is kind of long... This thought came to me from a reply in a different thread... Several week ago, a mostly active and engaged family in our ward very abruptly decided they were done with the church and resigned their membership. It was extremely jarring for a lot of people, but there we...
