Re: Secret combinations

Maybe something like: Q: Do you sell your signs and tokens for money? A: Of course not! I paid too much for them. A funny little story about this. We used to have an informal NOM lunch gathering at SLC Gateway food court. Every once in a while a newcomer would post that they would be there and we wo...

Re: Is NOM going the direction of some other online groups?

I have noticed that this and other non-related forums tend to slow down this time of year and then pick up more in the colder months, so that might be one factor. One group I used to read pretty much ground to a halt in summer months and then came to life in the winter.

She's churned it into a stressful mess that now Satan and his minions are having their way with me. I don't know where to take it from here because she's so emotionally driven there's no amount of logic provide to make her view any different. Maybe she's right! Or maybe Satan is causing the stress ...

Re: New WOW Video

It is a bit mind blowing to really think about the tribalism, and "us vs. them" mentality that the WoW instills in true believers. It makes me think of that story you told me about when your kids freaked out on vacation when they saw people drinking beer. That and the guy in my ward who blushed the...

Yeah that sucks. I agree that you should approach it in the vein of "thanks for your concern. My mental health is much better now, and I'm doing really well. The Fluff just gotta fluff."

Re: Gospel Topics Essay on Super Bowl XLII

I recently wrote a journal entry based on my memory of that game. According to my recollection, while they were being presented the trophy, and while the photographs were being taken, the Patriots were transformed temporarily into the exact image of the Giants, indicating that God had declared the G...

Re: The Trickster God

If The Book of Abraham was what the church claims it is, and if Joseph Smith was what the Church claims he was, it would be clear and we wouldn’t need convoluted, brain-twisting arguments to try and prove those things true. Good point. Very good point. How many other ancient found documents have be...

Re: New youth program being defined

Judging from the difficulty they have had getting disinterested (not interested but they don't believe in not accepting a calling) scout leaders to follow the BSA outline, I see this leading to a lot of kids missing out on essential personal growth opportunities. I hope I'm wrong.

Re: The Trickster God

Oh boy. Don't get me started on admitting when someone is wrong. I refer you to the discussions I've had with Maksutov over on MormonDiscussions and with others of how I retracted a book I wrote with Wayne May entitled This Land: Zarahemla and the Nephite Nation in 2002. Hey, I bought that book at ...

Re: Thought Experiment 1: Correct Faithful Worldview/Paradigm for BOA

Also, here's a suggestion for a potentially better way to propose a thought experiment for this audience. Don't put too much burden on the participants, like requiring them to read pages and pages of explanation and requirements. That probably felt to many (based on responses to similar surprise vis...

Re: Thought Experiment 1: Correct Faithful Worldview/Paradigm for BOA

I would like to respectfully suggest that disagreements and understandings are not mocking and scorn. Please try to consider that you might be taking all of this way too personally. This is a group of people who have rejected, usually through a extensive, painful, exhausting, and well studied proces...

OK, so I see that Ed picked up his ball and went home sometime while I was away. I just want to say something in case Ed or any future Eds are reading this. We have seen similar behavior several times. Next time maybe spend a month or so just reading the group to understand the vibe and get the lay ...

Re: Thoughts on the Kinderhook Plates

Wouldn't it be amazing if we had that translation? It would serve two purposes. For doubters it would be a smoking gun that Joseph was pulling it out of the nether regions. For apologists it would be further proof that "translate" doesn't mean translate, and would dilute some of the force created by...

Re: The Trickster God

If you acknowledge that you worship a God who accomplishes his means via lies isn't it logical to assume that you are not actually worshiping the God of Truth and Love, but rather the Father of Lies? This is what people kept telling me about my religion when I was a missionary in the deep South, tha...

Re: Thought Experiment 1: Correct Faithful Worldview/Paradigm for BOA

Similarly, when all is known about the DNA of the native Americans, we will understand why the ancient Canaanite DNA (notice that I specifically did not say ancient Jewish DNA), was not detected earlier, or why we didn't recognize it as such sooner. Because, in the end, the DNA problem will become ...

Re: Thought Experiment 1: Correct Faithful Worldview/Paradigm for BOA

OK, here's my response to the thought experiment. Sorry, I'm in a hurry and only had time to scan the instructions, so I may not be following the rules. The only way I can see to harmonize all of these issues in a way that makes the Book of Abraham true would be to assume that God intentionally crea...

Re: Thought Experiment 1: Correct Faithful Worldview/Paradigm for BOA

I don't think anyone is calling you nuts as much as questioning the usefulness of such an experiment. You appear to be taking a bit of a martyr stance very early in the discussion. This strikes me as a bit like what one of my philosophy professors called an Aardvark Problem. That's where everyone si...

Yes, I understand the implication of what I just said very well, and I am not looking necessarily for your acceptance of my Holy Ghost as the real one, nor do I expect necessarily that you believe anyone's Holy Ghost is real. Thank you. This inevitably comes down to a "my Holy Ghost is bigger than ...
