Re: John Larsen on leaving the church but not leaving it alone

Sorry, that was way longer than I intended. But it was relevant and action-packed! Five years ago I would have been very annoyed with John's talk, but now I found it quite moving and thought provoking. I have been appreciating and enjoying some of the people from my ward in ways that I couldn't bef...

John Larsen on leaving the church but not leaving it alone

This is an amazing and powerful talk from the Phoenix Sunstone symposium:

I would love to hear your reactions from different places in your faith transition.

Re: Have you had this experience? Care to share?

I think the majority of these kinds of experiences fall along the lines of Boyd K. Packer's admonition for gaining a testimony, the miracle is found in the retelling of it. Unintentional confirmation bias sweetens the deal each time the story is retold. BUT Really weird and apparently inexplicable t...

Re: Elder Neil L. Andersen: "We are not a rich people"

They'll probably ask for a special donation to help cover the cost. But the church most definitely won't be dipping into their own pockets to make improvements in someone else's country. Which still doesn't mean anything. The special fund for the Tsunami victims went directly into the general fund ...

Whatever the plans, it will most definitely cost a ton of money. As much as City Creek?

For a church that is so f--king obsessed with 'Jesus' being in their name, they don't seem to want him in their teachings. It's sad really.
The Pharisees weren't too keen on Jesus' teachings either, but they weren't dependent on him for branding. What a dilemma.

According to the Common Liturgical Calendar, tomorrow will be Ruby Tuesday
Given a choice, I think I'll stick with Fat Tuesday, although both are pretty tasty.

Is there any reason to think it would be more effective than the traditional method?

Re: How good is Christianity at making Christ-like people anyway?

Religion via assumed authority can be a great excuse for getting what you want in a way that is fundamentally opposed to what that religion's founder actually taught. I think just about any religion well and effectively lived can help you become more "Christ-like." As can a non-religious but compass...

Re: New and Confused (so long its not true, one little woman...)

Very attached to the feel if its right mentality that we get from the church. That is at the core of the Mormon Way. My wife is just starting to realize that whenever she is worried or uncomfortable about something she doesn't need to brace for disaster because that feeling is God telling her somet...

Re: Being Your Brother's Keeper

I think this and many other religious discussions could be satisfied by the time-honored doctrine of "don't be a dick." If we all just applied that simple philosophy we could spend a lot less time sitting in front of computers arguing about where The Bosses expect us to fall on the love/hate spectru...

Re: Non-scientific research - you can participate too!

Have you done the word search comparison on the written talks online? I once tried to figure out how frequently Jesus Christ was mentioned in conference talks across time. The problem is that his name comes up most frequently when included in the name of the church, when followed by "amen," or as a...

I count myself lucky to have gotten out. Good for you! I think the best treatment for a porn addition is probably to remove the person from the shaming religion that got them stuck in that loop. I have half of me that is terrified to step out because it's been the most constant thing in my life, an...

Re: Is There A Connection Between The Policy Reversal & New Legislation Passed In Utah?

That makes sense. The church originally responded to the bill with reluctance. Then they seemed to flip and embrace in light of the impending, but not yet announced policy flip-flop. Kind of like the way they tried to take credit for the marijuana proposition as a sign of their concern for suffering...

For her sake I hope it is a miracle but I guarantee that if, God forbid, the diabetes returns Facebook will not fill up with "oops, never mind, we were wrong." If anything it will just change categories from a miracle to a blessing in disguise, or possible a test.

But: Wasn't there an article recently that said that Salt Lake County is moving the opposite way? So I guess "some parts" of Utah are getting more conservative, and more MORmON , but not all. The fact that so many of these people are moving to St. George suggests that they are retirees coming to Ut...

Re: New and Confused (so long its not true, one little woman...)

Yeah, I was a porn addict. I have to ask. Were you a porn addict, or a "porn addict?" A genuine addict is unable to maintain a functional life because of uncontrollable obsessive behavior that makes it impossible to maintain a livelihood and relationships. A "porn addict," as defined by the church ...
