Re: Henry Erying's Big Faith

This is the same guy that told BYU-I students about 16 months ago that if you had doubts about the church or its leaders to ask yourself "Am I True" first. yeah, he actually told college students that they needed to get down on their knees and repent to God if they caught themselves having question...

Oh, great point! Do I remember correctly that one succession claim for Prophet after Joseph was based on the assertion that Joseph said his son would be the next prophet? Yes, that's why Brigham would not call himself a prophet (at least early on - I'm not sure whether he eventually adopted the tit...

Re: LDS Wombats help fire victims

Hmmm. Those wombats must be Christians. Pretty sure the non-theist wombats are making their burrows available as sanctuaries as well. I doubt the non-theist wombats will also be greeting the fire victims with a plate of cookies. And taking advantage of their captive audience to invite the Wombelder...

Why belief in Satan is comforting

The Devil us universally the most feared entity in the human imagination, but I believe that giving credence to ultimate evil is necessary to religion and is actually useful and comforting to believers. Here are some reasons: 1) The notion that you are the rope in a tug-of-war between forces of good...

But, even more awkward is the argument that God prepares a person to be profit, $eer, and revamalator by having them practice with superstitious dabbling in the occult. I think it hurts their case by showing the difficulty in distinguishing between religion and superstition. It also raises the ques...

Unless they are the cherished doctrines or policies of someone else's religion. In that case, knock yourself out.

So if you want to make sure you get to vote you can always register as a Republican but still vote Democrat. It would be pretty funny if a lot of people did that.

[Apologist Hat ON] There was no other option for Nephi than to kill Laban, If Laban had not been killed, He would have pursued Nephi and his brothers and killed them. [Apologist Hat OFF] That's right. God could send an angel to stop Nephi's brothers from beating him, and he could give Nephi to powe...

If I didn't have the gospel in my life...

The thread about wombats got me thinking of all of the times I have heard people say things like "If I didn't have the gospel in my life I know I would be a horrible person." What does that mean? Do they believe that they are horrible people but the church is keeping them under control? Are they rea...

Hmmm. Those wombats must be Christians. Everyone knows that non-theists are incapable of altruism. Why do it if you don't know God will punish you for not doing it, right?

n I think about what separates who I am from who God is, the difference is that God has a tremendous amount more intelligence and knowledge than I do. I don't think that God has a tremendous amount more obedience than me....who would he be obedient to? That's a great question. He must be obedient t...

I just keep hoping as I do that more and more that when he has to make a decision on the claims of Mormonism, he will use those same thinking tools to realize it simply does not add up. That's exactly what happened with my kids. We watched TV documentaries about ghosts, Bigfoot, UFOs, etc. and appl...

Try this one on: The JST translation of Genesis makes it clear that the "choice seer" that will be raised up in the in the latter days would be Joseph, son of Joseph, who is descended from Jacob's son Joseph. Both Smiths are obviously part of a long line of prophetic foreordained visionaries. It sta...

Re: What is the Church’s stance on feminism?

Another interesting tidbit - has the New Era become the new President Newsroom? It seems like that "clarification" for the WoW a few months back was in the New Era as well. Maybe because not even the youth are reading it? That is a really interesting insight, Mormorrisey. Very few people actually r...

I just can't believe that a church promoting "free agency" doesn't see the massive contradiction in that whole thing.
Because ultimately your free agency boils down to one choice: do what you are told or follow Satan. You are free to dig your own grave.

Re: What is the Church’s stance on feminism?

Latter-day Saints frown upon such things. That sums it up pretty well. I suspect we'll see people using terms like "the Lord's feminism," which of course isn't feminism at all. When they say Latter-day Saints frown on things they are telling you to start exercising your frowning muscles for the lon...
